  • This is a tree climbing technique based on a skill some people use to scale coconut trees. In the north, it allows you to move up branchless trunks. I've also included a woods-game that sharpens your climbing, endurance, strength, and awareness skills.

    Thank you for the motivation! I got so good at branchless tree climbing that now I can climb trees thicker than what my arms can grasp (as long as they don't have smooth bark). I can do it for at least 10 meters (I think that's like 35 feet) on most trees. I prefer the hopping technique because it allows you to bring your crotch close to the tree, making it easier not to fall, which is essential for those heights. The secret combination is strong fingers, strong pulling muscles on your hands, strong and flexible feet (you should be able to do at least one pistol squat for each leg), flexible ankles and low body weight. I would love to climb a palm tree once... Maybe next summer.

    I just climbed a thin and weak tree today because my younger brother and his friends had kicked their soccer balls up in the same tree. The only problem was that the balls were caught in different branches at the end of the thin tree branches and we couldn't throw anything to make them fall. I just started climbing it branch by branch which were getting thinner and thinner and then started to bend from my weight. Then I shook two of the soccer balls off. The last one was unlucky because it was stuck in the highest branch and was perfectly surrounded by other branches. I couldn't shake it off so I came down.
    I have also climbed pine trees couple of times but they were easy compared to this one because it had weaker branches.
    By the way it was a great experience and fun. No wonder, our ancestors were once tree climbing primates.

Great to hear from a rock climber, since you have the "body knowledge" of where to place your weight, and the requisite hand and forearm strength. I bet it would be easier in climbing shoes, too!

    You asked for our stories: When I first started climbing coconut trees I marked out my target, it took me a little over a month to develop my strength enough to go up this straight medium sized tree. Every day I would get a few feet higher. Eventually I ended up climbing higher and higher trees, to the point that I found myself swaying around in the wind 20 metres up a thin/long coconut tree, wondering if I had enough strength to control my descent without slipping! I decided to try get comfortable and had a little nap up the top while I recovered a little. I started losing my grip halfway down... No choice but to keep going though, the longer I hung the more fatigued my muscles became. While I was risking my life up there recovering some prick waltzed up and walked off with my best picked coconut too. greedy bugger, he didn't even look up the tree and wonder where the coconuts had come from.
    Anyway... The moral of my story is "Monkey see, monkey get!", keep it up!

    Really like this channel.
    I always find it very informative, but I think in this instance I know a better method than the one you're teaching:
    If you grip the trunk between the top of your left foot and the bottom/side of your right foot, and then grip it again between the inside of your thighs. Hold on with your hands, then you can pull with your upper body and extend the legs to climb.
    If you lean back you can support your self on just your legs and hang from the tree one-handed, which frees up one arm.
    Idk if this method is faster for everybody, but I can definitely climb considerably faster than you were in the video. It works for pretty much any thin, branch-less tree that can support your weight. In my opinion its also a lot safer than what you were doing and doesn't require as much upper body strength I even remember doing it as a kid.
    Anyway hope you understood my meaning and keep up the videos :)

    Reminds me a Russian winter celebration when they put a telephone post in a square, spray it with water which freezes and makes it slippery, and than hang on the top some prize to win if you could climb up and reach it by hand. Looked impossible, but there were some people who did win the prize. They climbed by hugging the post with arms and legs instead of your method of walking on a tree.

      I love it! Agreed on all points =) If they are larger, you can still climb using this or similar methods (especially the method putting your feet to the side of the tree with your knees splayed out) but it takes much more hand/arm strength. Alternatively, you can use a rope that goes loops between your feet and uses friction to hold you up in the tree. You might find video tutorials if you look up videos on climbing coconut trees =)

    Beginner climber here, learnt a great deal from this! About the lean-point thing though, isn't that just classical barn door mechanics? If you have all four points of contact crossing the same plane, you run the risk of swinging uncontrollably. To mitigate this one would place the feet further apart, or choose a wider portion of the tree to face (is this the lean-point?).

    • @ReWildUniversity
      @ReWildUniversity  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great point, Erik. If your tree is wide enough, definitely -- wider is good. Another great climbing method is to place your feet on either side of a tree, bottoms of the feet facing in toward each other, if that makes sense. That basically negates barndooring as your feet can act as friction points to prevent any swing. Thanks for such an intelligent comment!

    A huge part of the reason I don’t like exercise is that it’s boring and I can’t really see what I’m working towards. I don’t have the attention span and determination to keep going if the only goal is losing weight or whatever. I don’t see the progress (even if I lose a few pounds I have no faith in not gaining them back) and the motivation is minimal. This though... this just might be exactly what I need. I probably won’t be actually climbing anything any time soon and will need to focus on the preliminary training for a long time (the lifting a foot and just maintaining hold if I can get both up at all) but with climbing the tree as a real, physical goal (which sounds fantastically thrilling if I can ever manage it) I might actually have a way to work towards getting in shape. Gaining muscle and losing weight isn’t the goal; climbing the tree is the goal - I’ll just have to get better along the way in order to do it. I like to spend time in the woods anyway - and I used to adore climbing branched trees. I never considered that brancheless forest trees could be climbed too. Thank you! Once the snow melts I absolutely want to try this. This is the first time in a long time that something physically demanding has looked fun and desirable!

    • @ReWildUniversity
      @ReWildUniversity  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I love this! We find this to be true with many people who come here -- they've found that exercise is boring, and then find it thought to stay in shape. What we do is find what's fun for them. For some it's martial arts, for some it's dancing around the campfire, for others its tree climbing or chasing after deer. Whatever the case, it has to engage a sense of play, or to have a goal outside the idea of "you must work out just to stay healthy". We often phrase it as replacing exercise with movement, and making sure that the movement is fun and engaging.
      Thanks for writing!

    Thank you so much for the video. We have wild boars in my area and the most effective way to "win" against them is to climb the nearest tree. But the trees are not the best for climbing. I'll have to train myself to do this.

      Evan, those boars can be intense. I hope you don't have to use this skill too often =)

    With practice and sometimes the right shoes you can climb flagpoles and I-beams this way too!

    i'm writing a book and my character likes to climb trees so this was good research thanks! I would love to be able to do this one day but I don't think I quite have the physical strength yet haha :)

    I taught myself how to climb a while back using a method where you squeeze the tree with your feet, with your knees spread outward, and then you use them to hold yourself in place as you move your hands upwards. Then you pull your legs up, squeeze, move hands up, etc. It looks similar to baddah konasana, but with your feet under you as opposed to in front to bring in the center of mass closer to the tree. It requires a lot of upper body strength, but the force your barefeet create in the semi squat state gives you enough friction to sit there, take a break, and even (when you have enough grip) take a hand off the tree to grasp other things around you. I've even done it where I use that to climb one tree, and then reach out for another and transition to the other tree. :) plus it is more forgiving to the lean of a tree, since your centre of mass is close to the tree. Maybe give it a try. I know I'm looking forward to trying your new way.
    Thanks :)

      William Murphy William, this sounds amazing! Being closer in to the tree would probably allow for even thinner trees to be climbed. I'm definitely going to give this a try. Thanks so much for describing your method!

      ReWildUniversity I tried put your method the other day! Got up about 2 feet, then fell :p. Tried a couple more times but it was damp and muddy, so I had to call it quits. I need to get used to it, but I can see the promise in the technique. :) hoping to get a little higher today. Thanks again!

      Glad you gave it a try, William! It will get easier as your body builds the neural-muscular pathways. That happens pretty quickly.
