    I'm in Idaho, USA and we have that horrendous weed vine too. Do not rototil it because it will the grow everywhere. A single leaf starts a new vine. It's awful. Artichokes are perennial in warmer zones. So are peppers. It's December and I just started mine indoors. Potatoes such as Yukon Gold are determinates and only grow one level whereas indeterminates such as Russets grow many levels. You have to know which kind you're growing. This next season I'm growing sweet potatoes in a raised box on ropes attached to the roof so they have plenty of space. My pumpkin vine last year grew 30' in length (for 4 pumpkins), so it'll be planted further away. I enjoyed your video. Horseradish is like mint - very invasive. Rhubarb needs room like an artichoke. Give them enough water too. If you're doing it in a bucket, make sure it's at least 5 gallon, but the bigger the better. If you cover it, it has to be after it sprouted and you still need to give it light a few hours a day. You can use shade cloth too. Edited to add: a less expensive way to trellis the tomatoes is to put a 8'-10' post at each end, connect with a post across the top, and hang a clothes line rop from the top post and connect it to the soil with a long nail or landscape staple (which I plant in a hole, but that's not necessary). Then tie the tomato plants to the rope. I still prune the suckers to help with airflow, but only the indeterminates. You should not prune determinates. The Rapunzel tomato looks interesting. You might want to consider a Sungold, which is an absolutely delicious golden cherry tomato. For the trellis, you can use irrigation pipes, electrical conduit pipes, wood posts, whatever. Cover your eggplants with a sheet until it's plenty warm and maybe add some earthworm castings and kelp. Your garden is so lovely. Great job! Happy Holidays!

    Checked through transcript don’t see water melon (or bigger pumpkin I guess). Any reason, would it not thrive?

      @TheGumbootGarden  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I do have watermelon and some pumpkins growing (crown, butternut, small sugar, kuri), but this is my first year growing those. They can grow and thrive here, but I wasn't sure I had the space for it to vine out. However, this year I've decided to let them all vine out of my beds into the pathways and just see what happens. 😀

    If you want a perpetual chard bed all over your garden leave the Swiss chard plants up, but if you do not, I really advise pulling them up. They are Prolific!!
    Beautiful garden! Place rhubarb in the shade or partial shade. I love getting “free” seed from fruits, veggies and spices. Can’t wait to see your harvest! You can definitely freeze cilantro.

      Thanks so much! In Auckland, our weather stays quite mild in winter and we rarely see a frost. I've lived here 7 years and have maybe seen 1-2 light frosts. So our passionfruit plants do well all winter, especially with all the rain we get.

    So thrilled to find a kiwi gardening channel. Gumboot in the channel name caught my attention! I an in central North Island and about a month to 6 weeks behind your garden. Just planted ouf my tomatoes and my chillies are only about 10cm tall. My pumpkins ars just starting to germinate. I usually aim to plant out early November but with failing seed germination and grey skies things just haven't grown. 😢 I love the coloured stakes! Really brings a cherry splash! Question: where do you get your seeds from, especially for the more unusual varieties such as Brad's Atomic Grape, Dr Witchy's and cucamelon? I haven't been able to find them here.

    • @TheGumbootGarden
      @TheGumbootGarden  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I had a tough go at seed starting last year. It's always a bit disappointing when that happens, but starting them inside on a heat mat really helped this year. Our house is small, so they took up residence near a kitchen window for a couple months, but definitely worth the temporary congestion. Check on Etsy for some of the seeds, that's how I've gotten lucky a few times. They may cost a bit more, but once you have them, you can save seeds from your harvest. 😀

    I do freeze herbs and they keep much more flavour than when you dry them, BUT I don't think it's a good idea to use them raw except you blend them or something. For instance, they do well for salad dressings, cooked sauces, broths, etc. They turn darker, almost black, and chewier, so I don't think they work for raw mexican salsa. Maybe if you chop them very, very, very small, IDK.

    did you harden off your eggplants before planting out? i loved looking at your garden, i moved at the end of summer so i didn't have a garden this last summer, and i have to start from scratch building my garden here at my forever home....all i have right now are some grow bags....now i'm planning on getting some raised beds made and filled for spring....after 6 yrs of minimal money spent on gardening....i'm almost chocking on the cost it will take to just get a few beds made and filled again! happy gardening!

    • @TheGumbootGarden
      @TheGumbootGarden  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good point about the eggplants. They grew in a small plastic greenhouse with the door open and then a few days before transplanting, I kept them out during the day.. maybe they needed to adjust a bit longer because it was so warm in the greenhouse.
      That is so wonderful you have found a forever home and one with space for a garden! Our space is rented and wish it was ours, completely get it about cost though! I have slowly grown my garden over a few years and have asked for a couple beds built as a birthday present. 😀 The rest I try to pick up as I find them on sale.
      Good luck setting up your gardens!

    Hi April! I just found your channel, it popped up in my recommended videos. I homestead in northwest Florida zone 8b. I garden year round but I do have to cover crops in winter. I been making hoops and setting out frost blankets since November when we had first freeze of about 29F (-1.7C) but it does warm back up into the 60s during day and 40s at night most of the time. We will soon have a few nights dipping to around 29F again so frost blankets are going back on. I just lay them into the walking path when it warms up and then cover back over and pin down when freeze is coming. I invite you to check out my videos of my garden, I have subscribed to your channel and will be enjoying catching up on your videos. I doubt I will ever travel to NZ but I will enjoy visiting via your channel! Happy Holidays! It would seem so weird to me to have it be summer at Christmas but I'm sure all the below equator parts of earth are used to that idea being born there! Cheers and Happy Gardening!

    • @TheGumbootGarden
      @TheGumbootGarden  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Maggie, apologies for the delay in response. Your comment was held for review and I didn't see it until now. Sounds like your winter garden keeps you quite busy with the frost blankets. We're lucky enough to not get many frosts here, so the winter garden is pretty hands off except for the harvesting and tasks to complete before summer.
      I am originally from the U.S., so a summer Christmas is still a bit strange to me, even after 8 years, but it's growing on me. Hope you've had a lovely holiday and good luck with your winter garden. 😀

    Good morning April,
    It s raining here in Akl right now. My plants look happy and healthy so.
    How do you manage chiili plants in Winter, are they all alive out side.
    I also put the cardboard covered the soil because my tiger worms like to stay under shade and safe from the birds eating them. Tiger worms also eating the moistened cardboard and multiply a lot under.
    Love your big and open gardens with all sort of plants.
    I have plenty grapes fruits from one plant last year but the birds enjoyed them a lot even I covered them with the mesh bags Unbelievable, they knew how to open the bags. 😢😅😢😅

      Morning 😀
      To overwinter my peppers, I trim them back in autumn and leave them outside. I have had varying success with this though. But the survivors do produce just as well, if not better than they did in the first season. This past winter, I kept one inside to see how long it would keep producing. It did produce a couple extra months (we don't heat our house much in winter), but then ended up with fungus gnats and some other issues. In spring I put it outside, trimmed it back and isolated it from other plants and it's looking much better now and flowering.

      @@TheGumbootGarden Thank you April,
      Did you leave chillies plant in the ground over Winter or in the pots.
      Mine in the ground alive over Winter but starting moldy in Autumn coming then die after get too much rain from the hill.
      All chillies in the pot plants outside still alive may because not too wet on the ground surfaces.
      All pot plants went well inside house through Winter season. I placed them along kitchen window to get full afternoon sunlight so I have fresh chillis all year.
      Last year I bought the super hot chillis cost $37.- each but this year only $7.99 at Miter10

    You garden is so lovely and welcoming... love all the flowers mixed in! It is winter here in Houston Texas ... so I am just now in the planning phase for Spring. That obnoxious vine is a type of bindweed. You must pull it out from the root everywhere you find it ... if you can smother the massive area with cardboard layers covered with mulch you can slow the spread. Prohibiting photosynthesis is key to irradicating it completely. Good luck!

      Thank you so much and good luck with your garden planning. The planning is always so much fun! And thank for the bindweed advice. It has really been on the attack this year. I've been trying to pull it out as much as possible, but I'll have to try smothering it where I can.

      That’s different! I’ll have to give it a go when I harvest my passion fruit. Thanks! 😊
