We wouldn´t be able to skip our brushless 2.4 gHz plastic speedboats around the lake at the weekend if these pioneers hadn´t paved the way. Nowadays a really fast, utterly reliable hobby-grade rc boat simply represents the investment of around two-thirds of a working man´s weekly income. Back then it required the expenditure of a small fortune as well as countless hours of construction, setup and maintenance, yet they did make those investments of cash and time, and we modellers of today benefit from their legacy.
WOW! I remember this stuff in the mid1940s. The vacuum tube revolution. The batteries weighted as much as all the other models or, sometimes three times over. My eyes were big and my mouth wide open. Guess I'm still that way. Only the rich could afford such entertainment then. Now, even the most meager of folks may have some sort of RC entertainment thanks to Mr. Diode and Ms transistor........pp
I`m sure the boat at 0.53 was a Broadland cruiser ,can`t remember the maker but i built on in the late 60`s ..powered by a diesel,,,,,started it using a shoe lace !!!!! All that electrical stuff at 2.46 would now fit on a thumb nail ,,,,
1953 was the year I was born. My father was an aeromodeller then but this kind of equipment was way out of his reach. It was tissue and balsa gliders and rubber powered aircraft with dethermalisers in those days, though he kept with the hobby into his 80's, finishing with LiPo powered RC aircraft.
