Saw a documentary recently where Trifonov recorded the two Chopin piano concertos with Pletnev and Pletnev said something along the lines of: he was glad to work with Trifonov, because he is not only a pianist, but also a composer. In the "old days", there wasn't any distinction between performing pianists and composers. This distinction only came up at the end of the 19th, start of the 20th century. And Pletnev's right. Refreshing and very encouraging to see an already legendary young artist like Trifonov taking up composition again. Other pianists should follow his example. Some have already done so.
Very impressive work, Mr. Trifonov. Thank you very much indeed!

I read there is Prokofiev, Shostakovich, and Scriabin here. I agree,, but I also hear Benjamin Britten, Samual Barber, Debussy, Stravinsky, Bernstein, Copland, and more. What a lovely gift this is! I plan to really listen to it again and again. Why don't pianists compose like they used to? Because teachers of music don't teach that way. Having had a "somewhat" "better" musical education on the piano... we weren't allowed to do any of the following: compose, improvise, modulate, and direct symphonies. No, no, we were to just practice and practice and practice until we hated it! I was not allowed to even hear the pieces I was learning! I think we were cheated. I now know, after a lifetime of being a teacher, that composing, improvising, modulating, memorizing, and conducting must be taught at a very early age. Like learning languages; children's brains are open to all this, but by middle childhood, it stops and that's that.

I love this work. I hear a lot of the lush Late Romanticism of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff, some of the dissonant sarcasm of Prokofiev and Shostakovich, a good amount of the mysticism of late Scriabin, as well as Trifonov's own developing style in this.
To everyone complaining about Trifonov's work having too many influences, remember that Beethoven's early works had heavy Mozart influences, Chopin's had Beethoven influences, and so on. Great job to Daniil Trifonov, the conductor, and the orchestra!

As some musicians say that the Brahms first Symphony is Beethoven’s “tenth” Symphony; this first Piano Concerto of Trifonov is Rachmaninoff’s “fifth” Piano Concerto. All four composers are indeed distinguishable form one another, but all are of the same breed.

It’s interesting that Trifonov conducts himself differently by this performance than he does by any other. He walks in like how I imagine a composer would. His bow is slightly less exaggerated, his facial expressions a bit more stoic. This is HIS concerto, HIS music. He knows everyone is listening to something they have never heard. Very interesting to see. And may I say what a beautiful concerto. Bravo!

Maybe I'm wrong, but portions of the concerto hearken back to the 3rd concertos of Prokofiev and Rachmaninov. Truly a Romantic concerto! As the saying goes: "If you're going to steal, steal from the best!" I expect that one day this concerto may be paired with a standard concerto as a choice for perhaps the Cliburn or Kapell competitions. In any case, as a composer and concert pianist, Daniil Trifinov is becoming a household name in the field of classical music. I think that, whatever tone Trifonov really intended in his remark, 'scorning' one's past efforts for having missed the mark is quite consistent with artistic self-respect. One can afford the luxury of self-criticism if one feels safe in one's own skin. Humility consists not in putting oneself down, which is still a form of self-obsession, but in calm and realistic self-appraisal.
On a far higher level. the sinner saved by grace can afford to look with contempt upon his own sinfulness without feeling worthless. It is the fact that Christ loves us, regardless what we have done, that validates our worth. In that case we don't have to vaunt ourselves to obtain respect, or signal self-respect.

The first time I heard this wonderful musician I knew that he was special : outstanding knowledge of what he was playing and of course this is not a surprise to see him playing his own music
I don't understand why all the others musicians have stopped to compose and spend the rest of their lives to play music from others brains most of the time dead by the way... This artist maintains the music alive and we need to be very grateful for this... Bravo maestro...

To people talking about how he is wearing his influences on his sleeve, most famous composers did so. Many early Beethoven works had Mozart-like melodies, then Chopin came along and his early works sound a lot like Beethoven etc.
He's still young and I think if he keeps at it, his style will flourish and become more unique and he will find his voice.
Either way, this piece has great potential and I can't wait to hear more original compositions

BRAVO!!!!!! BRAVO!!!

The Allegro is Trifonov. Homage to the foundation of thought gives you license to explore your compositional contribution in the Allegro, which is interesting, and of value. Please look at the relationships presented by the stating of the extensions in the second octave, across the Circle. The bow to Scriabin in the introduction was not followed up on through the exposition to my ear's satisfaction. Crisp and clear performance of this unique piece! Thank you!

welcome to the world of composing!
I saw you and your teacher/mentor Sergie Babayan on Carnegie Hall interview video and loved your playing of Scriabin pieces.
You discussed the new concerto in E minor so I found it.
Your doing very very well with yourself. Thanks for sharing in USA!.
