@@dannyclaws1 Stansted airport is quite far from where I live. An Uber or taxi would cost £50 each way. Trains very inconvenient too as I'd have to go into the city and back out and also my flight leaves early in the morning and comes back late evening. (Train wouldn't be that much cheaper either)

Well, let me explain. Obviously not every passenger paid 1 euro for the flight, but airlines often lower the price right before a flight, because 1 euro is better than 0 euro. It doesn't cost them any extra to have one or more extra passenger on board, but every empty seat is potensial revenue which they are missing out on, even if it's only 1 euro per seat.
