      The absolute WORST part of the sleeves is they are printing on WHITE. Black-bordered cards look AWFUL when they are inside of a white sleeve.

  • @asaffin1
    @asaffin1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +134

    Even if pulling the sleeves apart isn't directly representative of any real-world scenario, it does demonstrate the quality of materials and the quality of construction, so in my mind is second only to shuffle feel in terms of grading.

    Okay imma be real honest here.
    Tolarian's reviews are well known enough that companies should be referencing your criteria during quality assurance testing. There shouldn't even be "bad sleeves" hitting public shelves anymore. Quality assurance team should be doing at minimum the same tests you do before they're even approved for launch.
    I'd say if a company gets below a B on a new product 2020 and forward, it's not worth giving the company another chance if only for failure to do their research and appropriate testing.

    • @danielhuras617
      @danielhuras617 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I'd say getting a B grade is fair enough to be worth considering. the gamegenic cons were slight durability issue and a slippery feel. That's about on par with normal ultrapro sleeves in my book.
      So for a first timer, gamegenic didn't do that bad.

    • @calw2358
      @calw2358 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you’ll notice, Prof specifically mentioned that the two really crappy ones were their company’s first attempt at sleeves. If they are new to the market, I would not blame them for looking to TH-cam reviews as a real source of criticism. That said, if they somehow get a d or an f on their second attempt, they they’re kinda screwed.

    Ryker sleeves were the first sleeves I bought over a year ago. I experienced the pillow-like deck sliding early on but stopped having that issue after a month or so. My most played deck has gained some grime on the sleeves over the past year but still shuffles well. The other deck I have, with Ryker sleeves, has retained the slippery shuffle feel you mentioned. Both have had some damage to the backs yet seem to self heal over time. My stretch tests have been more resilient than what you showed. I'm hoping that this is just an off batch from the manufacturer. The rest of my decks are sleeved with different sleeves that you have recommended in your videos. My current favorite is the Katana sleeves. Thank you again for doing these reviews and helping the magic community!

    Dragon Shields are a tad more expensive(around 70-80ish) but boy do they deliver. I loved that brush artwork with the insignia, so I might hunt for it in my next deck. Nice review prof.

    I made a quick overview of the brushed card sleeves as well (quick 2-minute video). The only thing I didn't do is the stress test because that's more your thing, Professor. lol

    Thank goodness for these videos. I recently got into MTG and my friends told me to try some Dragon Shield sleeves but I couldn't be more disapointed in the quality. I was so shocked at how poorly made they were I can't even use them. So I've come here to do sleeve research and find something better quality

    Those "Ryu" sleeves are awesome! I picked them up not knowing they were Dragon Shields (No name on the box) and was thrilled when I got them home. They are just as good as the rest in the series, plus look great.

    This is the first time I've noticed you switched to 60 FPS. Your animations look a lot smoother! I like it. The higher frame rate makes the shuffling shots just feel nicer to watch as well, very noticeable improvement.

    Hey Professor, love the content and all the research you put in, as you recommend Dragon Shield a lot, I would love to see a comparison with all of the different matte colours in terms of opaqueness as I feel this would be really helpful to know before purchasing. Thanks as always, and look forward to your videos :)))

    I think you for all the information that you provide for product reviews I bought mini products that you gave a process and I’ve also tried some of the not so good ones to get my own opinion because that’s what matters the most is what I think of it and I think you do a good job of letting everyone know about it but sometimes it could just be for me

    Gamegenic was promising , given the superior quality of their deck boxes. Alas, Dragon Shield remains the only choice. And their sealable inner sleeves are the life changer for storing foils and resleeving.

      If the Prof is reviewing a bunch of sleeves, and Dragon Shield are in that collection, you can bet they will come out on top. Almost no need to watch the video before making a decision. Personally, I rarely buy anything but DS now. And if I do, it's only because my LGS only has Ultra Pro and I forgot my sleeves.

    I’m imagining you could have these two thin clear sheets you sandwich the card between then use a blowdryer to activate the adhesive and when it cools down cut around the edge of the card with an exacto knife. Then that will eventually get scuffed up and you use the blowdryer to unstick the sheets and repeat with new ones.

    I'm not a Magic player, but I found this video whilst looking to see if Ryker sleeves are any good. Really enjoyed watching and seeing how different sleeves can be!
    Recently got my hands on a sealed copy of Citadels with the dark city expansion, and will definitely be sleeving them to preserve them properly.
    I've had good experience with Fantasy Flight so far when I got the Citadels classic edition and also for my copy of Mascarade, so I might just get more of those.
