Tie-dye pattern P121 : Diagonal Pleats

- Clean design with a very beautiful result. You simply have to fold the shirt using the pleating technique. To do so, pleat it diagonally from the lower corner of the shirt up to the opposite shoulder. Make small and consistent folds for greater result.
For dyeing the shirt, all you need is to dye parallel lines while alternating colors. In this case, we are using yellow, blue, and red.

𝟏) 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐭
Start with a clean 100% cotton blank white shirt.
Soak the shirt in water then wring it out. Leave it slightly damp.
𝟐) 𝐌𝐢𝐱 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐲𝐞𝐬
Using 8oz (230ml) bottles
Measure and add your dye powder first.
Add 1 teaspoon of soda ash to the bottle.
Fill the bottle with water and shake well.
Don't mix too much at one time - the solution only stays good for a few hours.
𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡 - 𝐃𝐲𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐲
Pastel - 1/20 tsp (0,1g)
Soft - 1/8 tsp (1g)
Medium - 1/2 tsp (4g)
Strong - 1 tsp (8g)
Powerful - 2 tsp (16g)
𝟑) 𝐅𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐭
Choose your favorite technique and follow the folding process.
Pleat, crumple, and fold your way to success.
When you're done, bind the shirt using rubber bands or string to secure it in place.
𝟒) 𝐃𝐲𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐭
Using your dye bottle, apply the dye gently over the shirt. Use your favorite technique or let loose your creativity, there's no wrong way to do it!
𝟓) 𝐋𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐲𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐭
Leave the shirt in a warm room. The dye reacts better at a temperature of 70°F (20°C) or more.
Let the dye react for 8 hours or overnight.
𝟔) 𝐑𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐭
Rinse your shirt in the sink under cold running water. Open up the shirt while rinsing. Continue rinsing and washing by hand until the shirt stops bleeding.
Soak the shirt in warm water to remove any remaining dye.
𝟕) 𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐭
Machine wash the shirt by itself or with other tie-dye shirts for the first wash.
Cold wash with a small amount of detergent.
After the first time, you can wash your tie-dye shirt with other pieces of clothing.

Is it better to do the pattern you want first or to damp the shirt first ?
You want to damp the shirt first. Then do your pattern using the rubber bands. Then color your shirt both sides. Once you are finished put the shirt in a plastic bag over night. Then next day soak the shirt in running cold water til you get clear water coming off the shirt. Take the rubber bands off an there you have it. I re rinse mine once the rubber bands are off. An hang it up in your shower. I was taught to turn the items inside out an tie dye that way. Have some gloves handy

Love it. Where do you get the colours please. We used to fo this in the 1970s but had to use salt to set the colours. Is that not used now, please.

Hello! We are currently using American Apparel t-shirts. We also tried other brands such as Gildan, which are cheaper but are less comfortable. The shirts you use depend mainly on your budget and what you want to do with them. I would recommend cheap shirts like Gildan if you're just practicing and more expensive, comfortable shirts like American Apparel or Bella&Canvas if you want to sell them to your customers.

Not understanding what you are doing with the giant tub of liquid. I'm guessing its water? Are you rinsing the shirt out this way? I rinse mine out under running water, so a bit confused lol. The shirt looks great though!
The giant tub is indeed filled with water, we use it to rinse out the shirts just like you said. Rinsing it under running water also works very well. Both techniques are fine but we prefer dunking the shirt in a bath of cold water because we find that it works better for us, not only for showing the viewers but also to prevent backstaining. @@Chandye doing it this way prevents backstaining?? Really? I wouldn't have thought that because of all the dye contained in that water. Neat.
I agree that it might seem counterintuitive at first glance. What really happens is that as the shirt is submerged, not only is the dye getting diluted a lot but the soda ash is also getting diluted. The result is that the shirt quickly finds itself in an environment which is not conducive to dyeing. The large amount of water weakens both the dye and the soda very quickly and this effect is even more pronounced when using cold water.
@@Chandye after some doing more some research I finally understand what you're talking about. ☺️ I'm realizing that I'm not letting my dye sit long enough so they stop being reactive. So I have a lot of backstaining that I deal with if I'm doing lighter colors which is why I run my fabric under running water for a LONG time. Thanks for the feedback!

Hello! We love to mix our dye bottles with warm water, it makes it easier for the dye to dissolve and the added temperature makes the dye react quicker when it touches the fabric.
