I think what made Spinal Tap so funny was the fact that, if you didn't know, you'd think they were a real band. The songs were genuinely catchy and their image was spot on. I think Ozzy once said that he didn't get the joke at first because it all looked so real!
I heard they learned their instruments (became musicians) specifically for Spinal Tap. If so, that would seem to indcate something like genius or savant ability.
And yet how many legit heavy metal acts had giant skulls with horns on stage and skeletons etc. lol. What makes TAP so freaking perfect is that they absolutely nailed reality so well. It's just genius.
2023 and this song is still holding up. Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer) looks like he could easily slip into Foghat and no one would think twice about it.
And to think these guys are talented enough that if they'd chosen to, they could have been a real band. Their music really is that good! Kind of funny, huh?
I absolutely agree. Particularly the popular "musicians" these days who literally can't even play a musical instrument!! They rely totally on computer programs to create the beat, the melody, the harmony...the whole shebang! Ridiculous!
Every time I see comments like this it makes me wanna scream, because you really have to ignore the wealth of incredibly talented artistes out there just to make this really retarded point.

Spinal Tap-The best Rock and Roll heavy metal band that never was. These guys are just absolutely great. It is hard enough to play in a band without having to make it tongue-in-cheek and they are actors.
Yeah, mostly predictable remakes and rehashes. Safe investments. HOWEVER, there are some production studios that still take chances with original stories and concepts. A24, Blumhouse, for examples. Look for those.

This is when music was fun. Watching it makes me think of all the years I'd lived in hell holes writing songs, performing across the nation and waiting for that one hit. I love the Tap and all they represent.Youth, dreams, fun, relaxing by poolside with friends, flying to the next show, having stage props, big amps, long hair,a guitar with an RPM tach on it! I love you guys!(including Rob Reiner and all drummers!) Thanks for the memories, great, acting, great songs, playing, and laughs.
If it weren’t spinal tap we would not have bands like ugly kid joe , anthrax , green jello , GWAR, primus . And movies like School of Rock , Rock Star, Airheads , Waynes World and Rock of Ages
Viv's death was faked. In the mid-80s Tap owed loads of money to charities, but it was learned that only Viv Savage's name was spelled correctly on the contracts. Thus, Viv was the only legally responsible party. And so it was: Viv dies, having broke his own employment agreement with Tap by lying about drumming. As a result, Tap were absolved of all debt, even recouping Viv's estate and life insurance payout as business expenses by claiming damages. He still plays for The Tap remotely via morse code.

Jez Creed Their songs were better than 90% of the "real" Metal bands. Brilliant concepts and great lyrics along with great hooks! Long live TAP !!!
+Jez Creed they are a real band, but they aren't real people.
+Jez Creed Their lyrics certainly weren't any worse than songs by bands like Def Leppard or White Snake.
+NatashaY94 I think Spinal Tap's drummers had it a little worse than Def Leppard's.
+Jez Creed ummmm , sorry they WERE a real band andALL of them are accomplished musicians
Spinal Tap deserves to be in the Rock -n- roll hall of Fame.
Amen to that!
Nah they are to good to be in that piss stain of a Hall of Fame.
I think Spinal Tap should play at the Super Bowl.
It's a step down for a class act like this one, mate...

they had a longer and more successful carrer than NWA and Trot DMC.
They would be booked for the super bowl but wind up playing a high school basketball game
Excellent idea!
Every place I’ve been employed.. this song has always popped in my head.
Yes Hellhole and and we got to get out of this place by the animals

Nigel Tufnel just kills it with his solo! 🤘🏻🎸⚡ I always crank my speakers up to 11 when it's his turn.
