Earthbound as a Deck/Engine is something I have been super interested in, but hit a few roadblocks in my own testing/deckbuilding. This is EXACTLY the type of video that I needed and wanted right now, and I would absolutely love to see more of it. Thank you so much Josh.
This was amazing - I learned quite a lot about the deckbuilding process - would love to see more videos like this for rogue / budget strategies, like dinosaur, exosister, centurion, etc
Mad respect for coming back with that attitude, very often people coming back just complain about how complex the game has become (which is true) and are not willing to learn.
@@Ragnarok540 The complexety is one of the reason why it took me so long. Of course I've heard about the new mechanics and it really feels kinda intimidating at first. I've tried other TCGs but they just don't give me the same feeling like YGO, which I grew up with. I'm not sure if it's nostalgia, the archetypes or the mechanics (even the further developed, advanced and complex ones) but it still catches me the most. Probably it will take some more time 'till I really understand everything, but videos like this really help to develop a kind of understanding. Another big issue is the pricing, but right now I focus on learning the game again. That will be a problem for another time. :D
@@crimsoncaulfield The progression of extra deck mechanics is pretty interesting. A problem fusions had originally was you need 2 monsters + a fusion spell, 3 cards to make 1 fusion. As the strategies got more consistent it became too much cards to draw (modern fusion decks find ways around this). For synchros they cut the middle man, the fusion spell; all you need are the monsters, but as to not make it too easy they made tuner monsters a requirement, not just use any monster. When XYZ were released they even made it so you do not need any tuner or spell, but their drawback was monsters sharing the same level; intuitive and interesting, and made monster levels important for a new reason. Then there are pendulums which are kind of their own thing. Finally, as a progression of fewer requirements for extra deck summons, links were released as the most generic extra deck monster. All you needed were monsters that fit the requirement, however a lot of stronger link monsters (higher link rating) needed more than 2 tributes in exchange for only using monsters. Nowadays a few powerful low links exist though like IP and SP.
Bro, last time I played the TCG (physical card game) was 18 years ago. I returned to the game back in January, thanks to Rarity Collection and recent Structure decks. I only go once a week to locals for tournaments. I lose a lot but that's OK because I just wanted to experience it again.. Winning is just a bonus! Plus the people at our locals are nice enough to give some tips, so I can get better. Come back to the game!
If anyone's interested, the last version he came up on is (by omega prices) a little over 100 dollars counting main and extra deck. Surpisingly cheap to me, since I thought that the runick engine would've made it a little too expensive, instead it's just a little more than a bonfire
@@dericklopez8360 I don't really know, I watched the whole live and listening to josh's thought process it looked like this was the optimal build anyway or something similar (I'd also advise you to watch the playtest against PAK) But honestly if budget isn't a problem for you, you can strive for a more expensive deck altogether, like something using bonfire or the diabellestar engine or maybe even both. The new snake eyes deck with phantom nightmare for example is a very expensive deck but it's looking like it'll be the best in the format

I'm pretty sure someone mentioned this already but I think just having a picture of the card appear on the side of the video would be really helpful for watching the VOD and I think turning off the auto focus was the way to go but thats all I've got in terms of feedback for the video. I Please do more of these in the future. :)
Harmonic geri + line walker can summon the chimera level 6 fusion (won't get to hand loop since not fusion summoned) but can banish it to revive a fiend, and AFD. While setting up a fiend revive and a field spell cycling.
Are you planning on "Part 2s" of these deckbuilding videos? You now playtested vs PAK and got some new insights. It would be awesome to also see your thought process while improving the deck with the results from the match and re-evaluating your "thought fodder" :)
2:45:19 I really like Revolution Synchron instead of Jet Synchron honestly You can synchro summon Ancient Fairy Dragon with Rev Synchron in hand + Geri. Then since you control Ancient Fairy Dragon, you can special summon Rev Synchron from GY to special summon Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon. Then if you get Nibiru'd here you can at least negate that with Crystal Wing. The dump off of Rev Synchron's special summon from GY also can be a runick that gets you into more draws if you had used Ancient Fairy Dragon to add Runick fountain again Rev Synchron is a lv3 tuner OR a lv1 which fixes problems if you get handtrapped
@@davecatss6652 Revolution Synchron being copium doesn’t add anything to the discussion and also doesn’t address why Revolution synchron usually isn’t optimal which is what you’re trying to express. When is it best? Your opponent doesn’t know you have it & is trying to better time their negate & gets blown out by a level 7 dragon synchro they didn’t plan for. Usually this requires a variety of level 7’s When is it not good? When you don’t draw it, and your deck doesn’t have combo lines that search it, and also your deck doesn’t have combo lines that goes through synchro 7’s, you have likely wasted an amount of extra deck slots equal to your Revolution synchron package which if you want it to be good… is a minimum of 3. Having 3 dud extra deck slots is very bad.
@Exisist5151 I mean, it may not be optimal but I'm taking Omega out of my extra Deck for Crystal Wing I just like Crystal Wing. It's a cool card. If I draw into Rev Synchron with Runick Fountain/Coral/Stardust and I have an extra runick in hand, you betcha heart I'm making Crystal Wing. Omega is fine, rips a card out of the hand, but Crystal Wing is just so cool and also deals with beeg boss monsters 🤣
rev synchron does not fill the roll that jet synchron does because to revive you have to control a level seven or higher dragon synchro, so it cant be sent with accel to give you a second body

In the metal marcher line you can use your second runick spell to summon the level 5, trigger fountain to draw 2. Then make stardust charge with your 5 and 1, then make croc with marcher and charge warrior. In the end netting you 4 draws.

Thank you on the upload, Josh! Your thought process on picking Extra Deck choices and the decision to amass more draws in anticipation of nibiru were educational and admirable. I'll keep those in mind from now on. While I was watching, I realized that Runick is lucky to have consistent access to discard 1 -> search effect (Hugin) that easily turns dupes/garnets on hand into someting more desireable. I wonder how to tackle this sort of problem in an archetype (especially non-meta one) that has less consistent or maybe no access to discard effects, especially if running multiple additional engines that each have their own garnets? I hope this will be answered & showcased in the next installment of this deckbuilding series. I'll be looking forward to it, and thanks again. 👍
The only instance of this in a non combo deck that I know of is lab with nadir servent engine discarding the ecclesia for furniture and adding from gy to hand
if I had one request it would be for a quick video that goes a little further into the alternate combo lines, You went over them in this but u didnt go fully into what it would look like in the end when u go into the metal marcher line and the accel synchron line. You like go into the beginning of what we would do but i at least didnt see how these lines fully play out. I think others would find that helpful as well. Like you explained the full line with if you have ground keeper and only 1 runic going into the croc line. so like if you could go into the ideal way the marcher and accel lines would cap off like that, I think I know but would love to see what your full thought process/optimal results would be for those

You were playing around Nib a lot in this video, where there is nothing wrong with that. However, going the Harmonic Synchro Fusion route plays into Nib, but does play around Droll, especially if you can also get into Baronne by having a second Runick card turn 1. Just my thoughts from about one hour into the video.
Are you thinking about harmonic on coral + geri? Thank you for commenting this, I had a feeling there was a reason why you'd want to end on drago + baron but I couldn't put in my head exactly why

I always enjoyed Runick when used as a complementary engine instead of the stun variant. I feel like Runick variants often tend to be one of the most skill expressive decks and I love them. The Earthbound version is now another gem to add to the list of really fun Runick variants 💙💜
Personally, i've just been running a single copy of Iris Swordsoul and Fallen of Albaz to summon off of Incredible Ecclesia. Mirrorjade is basically my out to Naturia Beast.
Am i wrong but is it way harder to bring out fairy dragon without vision so if you cut vision its probably useful to cut fairy for dispater plus crimson?
loved this content, It inspired me to pick the deck up and give it a shot and i fell in love with it. I've come to some different conclusions on a few things but I wouldn't have even started testing without this. I think the extra deck is chefs kiss perfect aside from the omega ive been back n forth with it and tenyi berserker. berserker is good into FK and it helps to OTK when u get ur battle phase after setting up and simplifying the game state. I ended up cutting the resonator pkg it was bricky to me and just didn't help in many spots and i replaced with 3rd Talents, Called By, and monster reborn. Reborn has been an all star its just the perfect card for every scenario when I draw it. Its the perfect tuner, perfect non tuner, or even a threat if yo'uve lost ur Barrone for example or destroyed an opposing boss monster. I allso like evenly in the side and im currenly on Nib, it does enough to help simplify game states even if it doesnt full stop.
Joshua I love how in depth you get. I learned a lot watching this. Now can you answer me this: why not Fenrirs? I might be missing something. The only reason I can think of is the probably many instances where you would Summon Hugin in Draw Phase to circumvent Droll.
Nibiru is such a well designed card, unlike Maxx "C", for example. In this 4 hour video and I think a good portion is dedicated to interesting plays that respect and play around it, if it didn't exist it would be very easy just to go first and just go full combo. In the case of Maxx "C", you either have a counter so you won the minigame or you lost the minigame and most likely the duel if you don't have a play that doesn't give your opponent a million cards.
Big fan of this kinda content. I don't get many opportunities to see how the mind of one of the best in the world works and watching you go through your process is educational, and fun. Hope you do these kinda videos more!

This is a really cool version. Nice ideas all around. I think it suffers from the typical issue of Runicks not having room for enough non-engine, but still it looks good
How does any runick engine deck deal with voiceless voices deck since the continuous spell prevents targeting? Asking as a fellow runick player my self
This was like watching someone explain astrophysics to a bunch of deaf toddlers. I got so angry at chat for stuff like "you can run SP if you don't have harmonic" "Play denglong and brick yourself to death" "explain the thing you explained 5 seconds ago" "just play bystials instead".
Have you considered fiendish golem to search with vision resonator? It could be another target when you have already acces to gaia/a extra interruption on the opponent's turn
If you play harmonic synchro fusion, you can use it on the garden rose maiden plus the lvl 1 earthbound to make coral dragon plus the lvl 6 fusion and you end on baronne, dis pater and omega
Haven't seen the vid yet but kinda enjoy and appreciate Joshua's dedication to Runick. IDK why but I like the idea of a signature archetype. Even though I think runick should be used for kindling my chimney exclusively but that's just me xD

ok, this was great, even if I got a bit distracto brained at times but also, idk if it's been done already, but do you see post-testing/format shifts live deck editing being on the table alongside live building new decks from scratch? for either this deck or any future ones. because I'd be very down for that thought process as well(maybe even a day of just playtesting and editing various changes back and forth, to see what all works and doesn't)
I think this kind of irl content is great. We always get to see you play online and on feature matches, but I would love to see more physical content from you Josh. Locals vlog would actually be 🔥🔥🔥, but I know you said locals is kinda far from you.
I know I'm a bit late to the party but you can use harmonic synchro fusion to make naturia beast. The materials don't matter cuz you're not synchro summoning you're special summoning. Sure you can't make it generally but with harmonic synchro fusion it's crazy. And you keep in the Rose maiden for your general 5 synchro summon

I think you could play a like 50 card deck with an centurion package so when you get hit by the big rock you can go into the new centurion 12 to add. If you were to go into kragen you could add the centurion fieldspell this could also make ancient fairy dragon way better. I will consider playing the package as a whole side deck.
So you play the new coming centurion synchro 12 to add the 8 star( he is also a good discard for your runicks) and search the fieldspell with eiter kraken or fairy dragon( win time) and with a tuner one field you can go into a 9, 10,11 or 12 synchro during your opponent’s turn.
I’ve been working on this deck for the last week and got pissed when I saw this video, lol, haven’t even watched yet but I already see that he is rejecting the deng zing combo as I did early on. I started building after a sneak peak 2 days before the set came out. This man done blew up the sauce damnnnnn
Shit I do have a better build still. I concluded you have to play Kash for this deck to be competitive in any sort of manner. I would say mine is better because easier ways to 10, more board presence, and crazier end boards
please do a unchained post phantom video pak brought up the idea of berserk archfiend the new lvl 6 fiend from the set and its supposed to fix alot of issues aisde from that great vid would love to see more like this.

If you're looking to show card images on screen instead of having focus issues you can pull up a browser and isolate the card window with cropping.

I would have played around with making trishula in this deck. Trish your opponents hand turn one on the way up to a dispater sounds pretty good to me.

I think the extra deck is chefs kiss perfect aside from the omega ive been back n forth with it and tenyi berserker. berserker is good into FK and it helps to OTK when u get ur battle phase after setting up and simplifying the game state. I ended up cutting the resonator pkg it was bricky to me and just didn't help in many spots and i replaced with 3rd Talents, Called By, and monster reborn. Reborn has been an all star its just the perfect card for every scenario when I draw it. Its the perfect tuner, perfect non tuner, or even a threat if yo'uve lost ur Barrone for example or destroyed an opposing boss monster. I allso like evenly in the side and im currenly on Nib, it does enough to help simplify game states even if it doesnt full stop.

Now can you answer me this: why not Fenrirs? I might be missing something. The only reason I can think of is the probably many instances where you would Summon Hugin in Draw Phase to circumvent Droll.
Nibiru is such a well designed card, unlike Maxx "C", for example. In this 4 hour video and I think a good portion is dedicated to interesting plays that respect and play around it, if it didn't exist it would be very easy just to go first and just go full combo. In the case of Maxx "C", you either have a counter so you won the minigame or you lost the minigame and most likely the duel if you don't have a play that doesn't give your opponent a million cards.
Big fan of this kinda content. I don't get many opportunities to see how the mind of one of the best in the world works and watching you go through your process is educational, and fun. Hope you do these kinda videos more!

This is a really cool version. Nice ideas all around. I think it suffers from the typical issue of Runicks not having room for enough non-engine, but still it looks good
You don’t need much non-engine if your main engine can already do board control AND make you good value

How does any runick engine deck deal with voiceless voices deck since the continuous spell prevents targeting? Asking as a fellow runick player my self
This was like watching someone explain astrophysics to a bunch of deaf toddlers.
I got so angry at chat for stuff like "you can run SP if you don't have harmonic" "Play denglong and brick yourself to death" "explain the thing you explained 5 seconds ago" "just play bystials instead".
If you harmonic your maiden with the level one you get coral dragon and their level 6 fusion which searches follow up or the level 5
I think the dispater lines are realy good and have nice follow up with maiden in gy.

Have you considered fiendish golem to search with vision resonator? It could be another target when you have already acces to gaia/a extra interruption on the opponent's turn
If you play harmonic synchro fusion, you can use it on the garden rose maiden plus the lvl 1 earthbound to make coral dragon plus the lvl 6 fusion and you end on baronne, dis pater and omega
And still cant draw with coral dragon....

Haven't seen the vid yet but kinda enjoy and appreciate Joshua's dedication to Runick. IDK why but I like the idea of a signature archetype. Even though I think runick should be used for kindling my chimney exclusively but that's just me xD
i kinda see runick as josh's archetype not because he loves using it so often but because he basically invented using runick as an engine in the TCG.
You should give it a try if you haven't. The cards reward you for running the numbers in your head on fountain draws kind of like poker.

ok, this was great, even if I got a bit distracto brained at times
but also, idk if it's been done already, but do you see post-testing/format shifts live deck editing being on the table alongside live building new decks from scratch? for either this deck or any future ones. because I'd be very down for that thought process as well(maybe even a day of just playtesting and editing various changes back and forth, to see what all works and doesn't)

I know I'm a bit late to the party but you can use harmonic synchro fusion to make naturia beast. The materials don't matter cuz you're not synchro summoning you're special summoning. Sure you can't make it generally but with harmonic synchro fusion it's crazy. And you keep in the Rose maiden for your general 5 synchro summon

Why not 3 Fenrir in side? It's a 7 non tuner for Linewalker, it helps breaking boards. Heck, why not Pankra?

this was so good to watch, i wanted to make this deck and i just didn't really vibe with the mbt list when i tried it
I think you could play a like 50 card deck with an centurion package so when you get hit by the big rock you can go into the new centurion 12 to add. If you were to go into kragen you could add the centurion fieldspell this could also make ancient fairy dragon way better. I will consider playing the package as a whole side deck.
So you play the new coming centurion synchro 12 to add the 8 star( he is also a good discard for your runicks) and search the fieldspell with eiter kraken or fairy dragon( win time) and with a tuner one field you can go into a 9, 10,11 or 12 synchro during your opponent’s turn.

I’ve been working on this deck for the last week and got pissed when I saw this video, lol, haven’t even watched yet but I already see that he is rejecting the deng zing combo as I did early on. I started building after a sneak peak 2 days before the set came out. This man done blew up the sauce damnnnnn
Shit I do have a better build still. I concluded you have to play Kash for this deck to be competitive in any sort of manner. I would say mine is better because easier ways to 10, more board presence, and crazier end boards

Coral wouldn't be considered synchro summoned, so it wouldn't give you a draw unfortunately.
