Beautiful video Justine, I loved this. I've spent so much of last year not printing my work, but for my gran's 90th this month we're putting together an album of all of the holidays we've been on together in the last 10 years. It's really beautiful to have that physical record of those times for her. Printing is so important.
Totally agree with you on printing. Even cheap prints from the drugstore help you see what works & what doesn’t. For smaller prints (4x6 & under) I just bought a little mini easel that I keep on my desk. I do a photo of the week & just keep rotating through whatever I’m feeling. A quick glance while I’m working always takes me back to that moment.
For me, there are three stages to a photograph. When I edit it from the RAW file to make the image. When I look at it full size on my 42 inch 4K monitor. When I print it. For each stage, the impact of the image is different. It is almost like a new image. We might feel like a 4K monitor gives all the detail of the image. But it doesn't. The printed image is the real image that was created. All the others were crude approximations.
Totally agree. I’ve gone for the magnet board as the least friction approach and super easy to play with sequencing your own stuff too. Nice to see you’ve got one of Josh’s prints too :)
legend has it...that justine is still thinking about how to put the photo wall together lol. the main reason I keep it all digital unless it's a gift to others
I agree about printing and I think it's more important to print your own work and see them without backlighting. You get a better idea of how strong they are. As for the warmth that the other photographers in Amsterdam showed you, one of the best things I like about photography is that if you meet someone with a camera around their neck you have an instant bond. PS that's my favourite Edgoose on your board.
I agree. And I have been printing on my photo printer on archival paper. Giving them to family & firends. I can see how their eyes light up when I hand them a 5x7, for example. Lots of smiles.
Great video, digital photography and social media have diminished the importance of printing your work. I bought a professional printer years ago( they don't even make it anymore)😂 and I have never even turned it on. I am so intimidated to even try because of the massive learning curve and my perfectionist mindset, it's really holding me back from letting myself do what I want to do which is print my work and give myself permission to fail but learn along the way. Thanks for sharing.
The photo with the 3 red benches is so good! I‘d love to print more, but all the spots on the walls in our flat are already cover with photos. So I wouldn‘t know what to do with the extra prints. But it‘s always great to hold your picture in hand and looking at it up close.
Photography is about Capturing Memories, Printing them is about Keeping those memories Alive. I haven't printed in Years since I had a darkroom and then my own digital printer. I miss it for all the reasons you mentioned. I also feel printing is the final step in total completion of a captured moment and one that we can physically hold and feel more than looking at a backlit monitor.
@@thornton we're gonna need to go ahead and move you downstairs into storage B. We have some new people coming in, and we need all the space we can get
I just bought 2 of those mini printers 2x3’s and have printed a bunch already. Agreed physical is 1000x better than digital. Btw I got the canon ivy2 and the Kodak retro. IMO the Kodak is better but both nice. The look when you hand someone one of those little prints are priceless. It’s all about the memories and that’s why we take photos in the first place.
I found it a bit odd that I teared up the moment you did even without knowing why you w emotional! As for printing; a photography isnt a picture until its printed! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. 🙏
Yes, but I don't recommend it. I used cork floor underlayment from Home Depot and it took weeks of off-gassing outdoors to remove the smell, then removing excess dust with a brush for what felt like hours, and I did not account for the shrinkage it experiences in the winter (I put it up in the summer), hence the gaps between them. It was still cheaper than a single bulletin board from an office supply store though!
This one was really deep ! I'm not into photography, but like your vids on the places you visit (especially Åndalsnes hoho!) I'm going thru a sticky patch in my life right now and yes, you had me reaching for the kleenex ... why you do dat ? 😢🙄😂
Hi Justine! My best friend passed away last year. She came with me on my photowalks and travels. I just found her pics from wandering around NYC while I was there for a workshop. Now I know what to do. Thank you.
"You’re one of these rare people that light up other people’s lives with your humour and energy." Totally agree!!
I love printing. I’ve been in a few art galleries now and it’s a very fun way to share images.

Hi Justine.
A big yes to printing and, sending people a postcard via snailmail. Enjoy your weekend.

Thanks for reminding me to print my photos. Looking thru a photo album is quite satisfying.
And super special prints---do on metal with the built in frame on the back!

Woahh, I love the cork board and interest vibes on it!
Was the cork board a DIY?
Yes, but I don't recommend it. you are amazing. I print kallitypes from 8x10 negatives.
Damn... now you got me wet eyed as well...
First. I have never been first before 😀
Well done bro ... If I was you I'd play the lottery today 😁
