Ill throw my support in too. My uncle works in the logging industry up in Maine, he made my mum lose her appetite with his description of an accident over the dinner table. If you heard my uncle tell his horror stories, you'd go the rest of your life with a proper respect for chainsaws.

You're lucky you still have ash. It was a very common tree here in southern Ontario in Canada, then we got the emerald ash borer and within twenty years it's basically gone extinct. We have huge chunks of forest were all the ash trees are dead and all the urban ash trees had to be cut down when they died off.

In Germany we have similar problems. In my area, lots of young ashes fell dry and die. I got some of them laying in the shop. As long as the arent some bugs breakfast, one can still use them since the wood is already dry. But older trees are affected too. There is a ca 55 cm log in my neighbours yard waiting for his appointment with the sawmill. Keep Up the good work mate, your videos are aweseome!

That's beautiful. And also nice how you've adressed the sustainability of cutting down already dying trees. Close to my house in the Netherlands a local bush was felled of much of it's ash trees too. They removed a lot of healthy one's too, a bit much I'd say. But hey, they're down now and they've collected only a part of the timber and aren't coming back for the rest (I've asked). So I figured I'd take some myself. Gonna make a birdshouse from a nice log piece. Might saw one into planks witg a rip cut saw if that's possible. Any more ideas for what to make with the wood? (except handles, I have enough of those lying around).
And as for the klompen. I walked a lot on those as a kid (for historic shows). Try to wet them with water and walk in them for a bit. Then place a hot wet towel in them overnight. I'm not sure how it works but it allows the klomp to set to your foot. Otherwise just wear multiple layers of wool socks :)

Thats some good advice regarding the clogs, ill be sure to give it a try. When working with ash its best used internally as it does not weather well. it goes all black and mouldy unless very well finished in some varnish or something, even then its not ideal. hope this helps.

Hey Eoin ✌🏻 I found your channel few days ago and I really enjoy the atmosphere you create in them. I‘m a traditionally trained carpenter from Germany, or „Zimmerer Geselle“ how we say here. But I left the carpentry in the summer right after I finished my 3 years of apprenticeship because of some bad experiences I made there and gave up on the love of woodworking. But in just a few days, watching your videos actually made a difference for me and it helped rekindling that love for traditional woodworking, I thought I lost. I am now planing a view new pieces of furniture for myself. And might even reconsider returning back to working as a carpenter :) Even tho a small comment on some video means not that much, I wanna thank you still. You gave me a new perspective and it is still helping me out of a bit of a mental health crisis at the moment. I hope u continue bringing smiles to the faces of many more people. around the world. Greetings from Germany✌🏻

A family friend(kind of like a great uncle but not by blood) used to have me help him with felling, chopping, and splitting wood, and a lot of what we worked with was Ash wood. every 4th tree around his property was ash I think. Unfortunately by the time I started helping him(after my older brothers got regular jobs) our area got hit with Emerald Ash Borers, an invasive insect that was doing a number on his trees. So a lot of our time was spent felling infected trees, much like what Eoin is doing with the fungus infected trees. That little epidemic mixed with the surrounding forest area(off his property) getting felled to make space for a bunch of big ol mansions made him and I quite sad because a lot actually pretty american midwest space was hollowed out for some rich people to hide away from the suburbs and city.

    Hey, Eoin!
Regarding the new planting of trees. If you're not already doing it, remember to plant a variety of species to replace the ash. This will decrease the overall vulnerability to diseases and pests in the future, something that unfortunately is expected to become more frequent because changing climate.
I don't know how much common knowledge it is, but coppiced chestnut is a popular wood for fences and gates. I am almost positive that there is no chance of that old beauty surviving. Even if you do manage to bring it up to standing and growing again, the root system is probably not going to manage to stabilise itself and become safe.

I've been cutting and milling timber for about 2 years now. For sharpening the chain, I'd recommend getting a file guide until you're comfortable enough to sharpen without it. I've dropped a few trees that were over 40 inches wide, but most of what I cut is 20 to 30 inches wide. Right now, in the Southern US, we're getting hit with oak wilt and dutch elm disease. It looks like I'll be busy for a while taking down dead timber, and I have to remove the bark on any oak if I plan to mill it or move it anywhere away from the stump if it's infected by oak wilt.

The parts that go out are cheap to replace. the “Right to repair” laws in America cause most brands (that are sold in the U.S.A.) to be repaired simply as long as you have a few tools I.e. screw drivers, pliers, wrench set🔧.

The emerald ash borer has been wreaking havoc here in North America. Thankfully, in my part of Missouri ash isn't a common species. I've mostly got post oak, white oak, blackjack oak, chinqapin oak, various red oaks, miscellaneous hickories, some cedar (actually juniper, but we call it cedar), and the odd elm, sycamore, black walnut, and hornbeam for the upper story trees.

Your channel is awesome. I am adopted and in trying to find out if there is anyone I share a genetic connection with. I found my ancestry as well. It’s called 23 if they have it in Ireland get yourself and do it the results you get back will absolutely shock propel. But every place you travel to for work is every places I have some ancestors. Where you live is so beautiful. I want to see it in person. I also do appreciate you working with hand tools. You respect the craft of wood and have such passion for what you do. Your smile is infectious. It always amazed me that you can make anything out of just about anything. If you ever decide take your talents and skills internationally and do some wood working on the beaches of the Florida. Please come visit. I was thinking though what you need is a dog. A work buddy. You appreciation for all things vintage, retro, old school and existing long before our parents were born or when our grandparents were just babies maybe even our great grandparents. I never understood why even we have big box hardware stores do you use manual tools to build your projects. Then I think back time growing up and at times going to the local hardware store. Called home hardware. It was small but everyone that worked there Ed’s so nice they actually knew there stuff. But this town was one of those towns back in the day where everyone knew everyone, I loved that for years every have been working on restoring the down town area. A lot the town is either 70 plus go years old or maybe even 80. I hope you never loose your osssion, creativity and genuine love and respect for wood working, hand tools and appreciating the beauty of vintage. The writer in me see something older than me and wonder what stories it could tell if it could. The things we could lead . Anyway your workshop is awesome and your country is absolutely beautiful and stunning. Hopefully I can see Ireland in person one day, visit that cool castle your work at and all the amazing things to do. I wanted to visit where it seems my Irish ancestors resided and you have given me a sneak peek of that, so thank you for that. Thank you for your content and I hope you get the opportunity to make all things you have ever wanted to make and all things you can dream up because the possibilities are endless when your imagination knows no bounds. Also love your personal style. The newsboy cap and sweater is awesome! One day can you make a video if your story. I am curious to know how you got your started in the world of building things by hand. What piqued your interest? Who is your biggest inspiration? Who was it that influenced you. when your not building things what are usually up
To like what’s other favorite things to do besides making things out of every single type of wood there is which by the way is cool. Also appreciate your knowledge of trees and that you show appreciation for the trees. I don’t know if I can afford you but I would love a piece of your work in my house

The situation with ash trees is no joke. The emerald ash borer + ash die back is seriously threatening to ash populations worldwide. The logging companies where I live are basically making a point of cutting down as many ash trees as possible because they've already found the diseases present in their forests, and a dead standing tree is no good, so they have to make the ash lumber while they still can

I've never used ash, however, as an Australian I have used blue gum, spotted gum, and my favourite, Blackwood, a Tasmanian hardwood. It's great for handles for axes and knives and it's not terribly hard to work with, unlike blue gum and spotted gum but I might have to get some ash to try out

@@Sketchy_Dood yeah blue gum is called blue gum due to the colour of the leaves and a powdery substance that the tree uses as protection from the sun or bugs or smth. Spotted gum has spotted bark and blackwood (Tasmanian blackwood is what I use) refers to the dark coloured wood. All three are hard woods and very nice, my favourite is blackwood though

As you're stockpiling lots and lots of ash, you might as well restore a bark spud. If you don't know of it, basically just a slick with a moderately curved blade, not curved like a gouge or an axe, but like how the claw of a framing hammer is. Just without the split in the middle. You can't afford to split every single tree, there are many dying ash trees and your back will be young and strong for only so long. Debarking will be crucial to hasten drying of whole limbs and trunks. Not to mention deprive insects and other critters a place to cause you trouble.
You might not be in the US, where pick up trucks are literally everywhere, but your life will be much easier with one. SUV and trailer is OK, but nothing is as easy to load and unload as a pickup. *Don't* get a small one, ash trees aren't small. Bigger trucks can move larger loads with far greater stability and ease than smaller ones, even with the same engine.
I am certain you will get a old truck with plenty of character. Make sure to do some research; get something that has good parts availability, easy to maintain and has a large knowledge base. This **always** ends up being something that was in production for a very, very long time with little change. I sell car parts, I know.
I just looked at Irish Driver's licenses, and simply getting the largest truck you can would actually be a good first truck. Feels weird saying that as an American.

Man, all the ash that has been destroyed here in WIsconsin is quite sad (emerald ash borer infestation...) though we're getting use out of it, it'll likely be 100s of years or more before we have significant live ash here again and it sounds like you're having the same problem but from a different pest...
I'm wondering if they've got local ash seeds once the fungus runs out of material to try and rebuild the ash population over there?

  • @joshualavender
    @joshualavender 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

I love ash, too, but it's getting hard to come by now in North America. The emerald ash borer is decimating our population (99% mortality). All the ash trees will probably be gone here in my lifetime.

Are your ash trees also experiencing the Emerald Ash Borer which is destroying ash trees here in America? It's an invasive insect pest also from asia. Hope you don't have it, and I hope we somehow don't have the Ash fungus you described. We've lost most of our native American Chestnut trees to an invasive asian fungus like your Ash trees are doing now.
American Chestnut was a great timber for woodworking and other uses, and was not as pale as the wood of your fallen chestnut. The lumber had great rot resistance. There is an organization that is working on restoration of the AC through genetic research and testing, The American Chestnut Foundation. Perhaps their research can also help with any work europe is doing to fight off the fungus and restore your Ash trees?

I live in the blue ridge mountains in southern USA I wonder how well it would grow. We have white ash or American ash I don't know how similar they are to your native trees but I can send you anything I can find out here you would want for free just pay the cost of shipping and I'll find you all sorts of hickory or white ash for handles or anything else you want I live in North Carolina which has a surprising array of trees that you can't find until you reach the Everglades of Florida and then all the way ranging to the state of Maine in elevation North Carolina is unique for having them all in our mountains the only thing I ask in return is the knowledge you may pass down I'm very interested in learning more about your skill
