父親は沖縄県石垣島出身のカメラマン。3歳の頃からピアノを始め、中学の頃にはシンセサイザーで打ち込みを始めるようになる。大阪星光学院高等学校から京都大学総合人間学部に進学し、京都アカペラサークルCrazy Clefでアカペラを始める。
卒業後、作詞家松井五郎への弟子入りを経て、2007年より事務所に所属し本格的に音楽活動を開始するが、鳴かず飛ばずの状態だったという。
この頃にニコニコ動画に出会い、投稿された動画に刺激を受け、ヒャダインの名前で投稿を始める。ゲームのBGMをアレンジし自作の詞で歌った曲は口コミやSNSなどを介して徐々に広がり、日本国内のみならず世界各国からアクセスが増加、好意的な反響を得るようになる。こうした反響が本人にとって自信となり、これが転機となってSUPALOVEに移籍、以後J-POPやアイドルソング、アニメソングなどをはじめとする幅広いジャンルの楽曲を手がけるようになり、数々のヒット曲を生み出すまでに至る。オリコンシングルチャート1位獲得の快挙も成し遂げた。
当初、「ヒャダイン」としてはプロフィールを公開しておらず、その素性は謎とされていたが、2010年5月5日のヒャダイン名義でのブログにて「前山田 健一」個人である事を告白。プロであることを告白した後もヒャダインとしてのニコニコ動画での活動は続けており、その一方で正体を明かしたことにより前山田健一としての顔出し出演も増えた。
2011年4月、テレビアニメ『日常』のオープニングテーマ『ヒャダインのカカカタ☆カタオモイ-C』にて、歌手としてヒャダイン名義でもメジャーデビューを果たす。同作では前山田名義にて作詞・作曲・編曲も担当した。レーベルはランティス。
2011年7月25日、自身のTwitterアカウントにてスターダストプロモーション芸能3部と業務提携を結んだことを発表した。
2011年8月27日、さいたまスーパーアリーナにおけるAnimelo Summer Live2011に出演。2万7千人の前でパフォーマンスを披露した。
2012年4月30日、自身のTwitterアカウントにて2012年5月からファイブエイスに移籍することを発表した。スターダストプロモーション芸能3部との業務提携は継続。
雑誌「GQ」主催により2012年11月19日発表された「GQ Men of the Year 2012」を受賞。2012年に活躍した男性として織田裕二・村田諒太・北島康介・有吉弘行らと並んで選出された。
2013年1月28日付オリコンシングルウィークリーチャートにおいて自作曲がTOP10内に3曲ランクインするという快挙を成し遂げた（3位 私立恵比寿中学「梅」、9位 ゆず「REASON」（共作）、10位 でんぱ組.inc「W.W.D」）。
2014年12月27日公開の能年玲奈主演映画海月姫の劇中音楽を担当することが発表されたひとですよね？(Wikipedia引用)

楽譜はご本人様が手書きのを公開してましたよ10年以上前の話ですが。超見づらいけど100%正確な楽譜なのでありがたかったですね。残念ながら今は公開していないみたいですね😢

How do you play so accurately with these gloves on? That's totally amazing. The gloves cut precision, agility and accuracy in half, I would say. And they also make your fingers broader.

The star power theme was a bit shoehorned, but it made a great segue to the little SMB1 theme. Mixing in the Fever theme from Dr Mario however was a stroke of pure genius. Great video!
