An Unboxing and first impressions of the full Kato N700 Bullet Train set.

I have the 4+4 set and will get the other 8 next week. I actually rode on this when I was in Japan.
As for the shark fin devices on some of the cars, in real life they direct the power cables between cars. Kind of like hang them up. So you were right, it's a power thing. :) Not every car has them.
And for the "hidden" compartment underneath the first and last car, they are for Kato's FL12 light decoders if you run DCC. They will control whether it should be white light or red light depending on direction of travel. They switch the colors automatically.
Finally, the gap distance between the old set and new set are about the same. It's looks "closer" on the old set because of the dark colors between cars. It hides the gap and make it visually smaller. It's an optical illusion. :)

By the way, the “S” in the N700S stands for “Supreme” as when it came out in 2020 it was the best version of the N700 series Shinkansen with many upgrades over the N700A model. With the “A” being the “Advanced” version of the original N700. The N700S has better brakes, packs of Lithium Ion batteries so it can run for short periods of time without power, and it is the fastest Shinkansen currently in service. The batteries are for moving the train off of bridges or out of tunnels in the case of an earthquake and the better brakes enable it it to stop in a shorter distance also in the event of an earthquake.

When you install the lights maybe also install a bipolar capacitor ( train can go both directions)
The idea when power drops from rail which gives the flicking the capacitor should maintain voltage over that time. I believe the train has a flywheel so it won't be affected by variations in voltage.
The new one looks better on your setup.

As much as I like the 500 series shinkansen design, I agree with you on the colour scheme being to dark for my liking, that is why I went the Tomix Hello Kitty 500 series shinkansen, as for N700 family, I have the N700S-8000 Kamome (kyushu) version. Besides a whole bunch of other N scale HST's
