when you said this song isn't typical for band maid, my first thought was they don't really have a "typical" at all. they always seem to have a concealed curveball to throw at us. they truly are the most astounding group i've ever heard and climbed to the top of the fave chart - dethroning even slayer (forgive me, tom araya)

This pace of the ladies is not so new or unusual. Their catalog already contains some rather "quiet" or emotional songs. 'Daydreaming', 'Wonderland', 'Start Over' or 'Page' are just a few that come to mind. Where I agree is that this song, both instrumentally and especially vocally, perhaps does a lot better than some of the other songs. But that could also be related to the content and background of the song. It is a very emotional song that still gets under my skin, although I have heard it many times by now.

They are geniuses, plain and simple. They transcend genre, and as you said, it seems they can do anything they want.
