Ron Simmons and Butch Reed were two of my favorites coming up. That's when you had to look like you could kick some ass in real life to get over as a wrestler.
I'm glad Jim put Woman over. She is the most sexiest woman ever to be in wrestling. My top 5 are 1. Woman 2. Sable 3. Trish Stratus 4. Sunny 5. Missy Hyatt What say you?
Butch Reed in mid 1985 was in the AWA, though he probably had an open contract. I remember this, because the first card I went to was in the summer of 1985, and on that card was "Hacksaw" Butch Reed vs. "The Claw Master" Baron Von Raschke. It was a great match.
Stormy Davis The Steiners were legit amateur wrestlers in college. I doubt when both of them were together they were scared of anything. I am sure they had a lot of respect for guys like Haku/Ming and Simmons but scared?
The Steiners were jocks. So were Simmons, Williams, Reed, etc. These were the kinds of guys they understood and liked being around. "Respect" doesn't always mean "fear."
I loved Doom with Teddy Long, such an underrated tag team, their theme music was badass. Funny enough I used to think Ron Simmons was the older of the two simply because facially at the time Butch Reed just looked like the younger guy and Simmons looked like the seasoned veteran.

Saw the Steiners and Doom go at it a lot at WCW house shows in '89 and '90, those were always great matches. Just no bullshit, physical as hell matches. Good times.
Started going to the NWA shows in late summer/early fall of 1990 & saw Doom face all sorts of teams from the Rock & Roll Express to Sting & Luger. Also various members of the Horsemen. I was among the small portion of the audience that cheered loud for Doom lol.
I remember that match..No one could beat Luger at the time when he had Harley Race as his manager, but when Luger lost I was happy to see Ron win the title...
I remember like it was yesterday. I was just a month or a few weeks until my freshman year in high school when Ron Simmons became WCW champ. I was really excited for him.
Ron Simmons had one of the best gimmicks ever in the early 2000’s. Remember when he would stumble across something random happening and he would just say “DAMN” in that deep hard ass voice of his? Awesome tv. I think they could have done much more with that.
Jim, Brian, thank you for taking my question on this week's Drive-Thru. (I'm sorry it was so long, I'll try to remember to keep it short next time I write in.) I was really happy to hear about all that backstory on Butch Reed, especially since a lot of people seem to kind of overlook him in a lot of cases, particularly his time in WCW with Ron Simmons. It's just nice to know that Butch's name is still kept out there among some of the great wrestling stars from Florida from that time period, along with other big names like JYD and Ernie Ladd. Thanks again for taking my question this week, guys.
Didn't Steve Austin say that only Ron could have walked around in that ridiculous blue helmet and nobody would say a thing about it, he was not only intimidating but very well respected and if the Steiners don't fuck with u that means u r a total badass
Remember back in the day when Doom came on the scene as a pair of masked guys brought in by Woman to feud against The Steiners and along the way Steiners won the NWA Tag Team Titles from The Freebirds and they did some where Doom lost a match and ended up unmasking where they were exposed to be Ron Simmons and Butch Reed then they got brutal and winning the tag team titles from The Steiners with the help of Teddy Long and reigned for a good 9 months and having a feud with The Horsemen over the titles and having feuds with The Road Warriors as well . They lost the titles to The Freebirds in February '91 therefore the team breaking up and feuding with eachother with Simmons becoming a babyface . Always liked Doom . Just thought the masks were unnecessary cause they were 2 legit badass wrestlers that could kick the crap out of you .Would have liked to have seen a longer title reign out of them cause when they were champions they dominated the competition . Simmons was a legit badass and Reed with his feud with Junkyard Dog and the Ghetto Street Fight is legendary .
craig strachan like Corny said the masks were used because it wasn’t like either of them just showed at WCW. Individually they were placed way way down the card. It would have been tough to call them even mid-carders. Taking 2 guys like that and all of a sudden they are both super dominant in a tag team WCW had to do something to show they were different. That’s why they had the masks and since everyone knew who they were, why they lost the masks so quickly.
@@robschumann9665 Well good thing they lost the masks cause they weren't helping their cause . I miss the name Farooq but thanks to terrorists, WWE had to change his name to his real name Ron Simmons. When Farooq was the leader of the NOD, he definitely should have won the WWF championship.
The name Farooq only worked when he was in the NoD because of the Nation of Islam similarities. Otherwise, it was stupid and would only work as a heel unless he was actually Muslim. Though I do agree he should've won the WWF title in the NoD

I don't agree with Jim's assessment of the Skyscrapers. Spivey's shit looked much better than Sid's. How, Sid is the one who got over because of his look. That's just my opinion. Incidentally, Cornette's podcasts are the best.
Doom is still so underrated & wish they could have lasted a bit longer as team & had another Tag Title run or 2. Although I know Butch Reed was worse for wear with knees etc.
I'm not having a hard time believing this at all. He was a freak of nature. I could look at him in the ring and tell in real life he was a force to be reckoned with.
I'm certain that Simmons-Ahmed story is wrong. When Simmons made his WWF debut on RAW, he kicked Ahmed while he was on the floor and messed up his kidney. He was out for several months and had to vacate the IC title. If Ahmed injured Ron after he came back, I'm not aware of it. But Ron injured Ahmed his first night in. That was in late summer 1996, and Ahmed didn't leave the company until early 1998.
From WIKI on Ranger Ross.... In February 1996, Ross was arrested at his home in Acworth and formally charged with bank robbery as the "Motorcycle Bandit", an unidentified man who made his escape on a Honda motorcycle. Following the robbery of a bank in downtown Acworth, Ross surrendered to federal agents on February 9.[16]
they got the first story all fucked up... ahmed was the one who got hurt kidneys, but it wasnt from wrestling he was having kidney problems legit. they made it a storyline that farooq's attack on him in his debut had injured ahmed's kidney and he had to drop the ic title and take time off to recover. he came back and they feuded for a bit till he joined but farooq was never off for an injury, not even a kidney problem at all.

Doom,Road Warriors ,Steiner Brother's & British Bulldogs the most popular tag teams ever imo
The Commandos were Ray Candy and Grizzly Boone
1989 NWA was crazy, when you had Gilbert & Sullivan as your booking committee.
I only watched WWF as a kid in the 80's and 90's so I didn't really see Ron Simmons until he was Farooq later, but one thing that always struck me about him was that he just looked like a badass, like a guy you wouldn't want to mess with. Not only was he obviously pretty well-built, but he just had a kinda "mean look" to him, lol.
Butch Reed was Stone Cold before Steve Austin
I say Bad News Brown was
Always liked Doom. Simmons & Reed we're awesome.
One the most underrated tag teams in the 80s
Doom was Bad ass
Only thing about that thumbnail.... Nobody's ducttaping Butch Reed to a wall lol.....
Iceman Parsons & Brickhouse Brown The Blackbirds were supposed to be Doom originally
That would have been a bad ass tag team even if Parsons was the worst member of the free birds
I don't agree with Jim's assessment of the Skyscrapers. Spivey's shit looked much better than Sid's. How, Sid is the one who got over because of his look. That's just my opinion. Incidentally, Cornette's podcasts are the best.
just the pure level of disdain when he said, "creative services". lmao i agree, wwf really sucks at creating a lot of characters.
Got over like a fast in church...oh holy shit the bed that's funny!!
you botched the message
I did. Holy shit the bed I did
It's a fart in church not a fast in church
Yes a "fart" in church...I botched the message holy shit the bed granny I botched the message...fasting does not go over well in church either though
I always felt like the Farooq Asad outfit was an inside joke based on the Ric Flair Spartacus thing.
Have Doom number 4 and they both get their day as singles wrestler.....
Idk what scott hall was doing in 89 but i think he woulda been a better choice 2 team w sid 4 the Skyscrapers
I could be wrong but I think he was in Japan or Puerto Rico
@@matthewjenkins7488 Hall was in the NWA/WCW in 89 as "Gator" Scott Hall.
DAMN!
Herd's crazy ideas would have been perfect in this era of WWE.
Doom was the shit
I really was a big fan of Teddy Long and Doom!!!
Farooq - Nation Of Domination 👨🏾
they got the first story all fucked up... ahmed was the one who got hurt kidneys, but it wasnt from wrestling he was having kidney problems legit. they made it a storyline that farooq's attack on him in his debut had injured ahmed's kidney and he had to drop the ic title and take time off to recover. he came back and they feuded for a bit till he joined but farooq was never off for an injury, not even a kidney problem at all.
Ron Simmons!
Dam!
