    In certain circles, the 3 Gorges Dam is known as the Taiwanese Independence Dam. As soon as China made the dam, they essentially made Taiwan a nuclear power, since most of Taiwan's Yun Feng missiles are said to be targeted on the dam, giving Taiwan the ability to destroy at least 3 major Chinese cities.

      You'd need actual nukes to blow up that dam. They can maybe shut down power production. They can't cause catastrophic flooding.

  • @redram5150
    @redram5150 4 ปีที่แล้ว +346

    This doesn’t take into consideration the debris. As the flood water travels it picks up buildings, homes, power lines and poles, cars, etc. in time the water will look like a roiling mountain flowing through the valleys. Occasionally the debris will clog. And it will hold a few seconds, a minute... and that extra pressure will cause even more destruction

    • @richardcox8409
      @richardcox8409 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Yeah there are lots of considerations, they would also be dumping water from any reservoirs in the flood path creating extra reserve, it would also be hard to factor in the random construction of emergency berms and diversions and if the dam fails I doubt it would be all at once. I would have liked to have seen an overall view but very interesting for sure. The Japanese tsunami would be a good data resource for city inundation flow characteristics to model on.

      That water is polluted and looks that there is so much derbies that it could stuck dams power production. They basically allow that happens and whole open inside, no sidewalls between turbines. And if those cracks on wall are true, this damn is going to be breaking news.. that whole structure is stupidly bad too many ways even known facts. And there could be many problems what not known. If you look it up on Wikipedia, experts told them not to build it. There's a simulation video showing the expected damage. China's is so screwed on this one. It's already a catastrophe. They have to drain the dam. They are trying and it keeps filling up from the days of Noah like rain. I and many agree God is pouring out His wrath against what China has been doing there. There's a half million living below the dam. No one knows if China is evacuating them? When it fails the wall of water will slam into a nuclear power plant. That's not going to go well. It's said there are lots of labs in Wuhan like the one Covid 19 is to blame. Deadly viruses? Deadly chemicals? They have an Inevitable water catastrophe, unknown how bad an environmental catastrophe and unless they can move the stuff out of those labs, a biological catastrophe too. All we can do is pray China is evacuating everybody below the dam.

Its just like a simulation of what would happen if a nuclear arsenal in the United States were to explode. It is the largest Dam in the world and the power produced by it has been recovered 7 years ago. The dam has also been vital in minimizing floods from heavy rainfalls. Those old 50-60 year old dams created during the Mao era had plenty of flaws and some had been demolished. These modern dams however, is completely different. Is there a chance of it collapsing? Yes but not like the one shown in the simulation where everyone is caught off guard and everyone dies to flood.

The most likely scenario, based on past dam failures, is that there would be an initial breach which would gradually be widened by the escaping water. It would still be catastrophic, but you would not suddenly have 39 billion cubic meters of water flowing downstream. Someone should look at a more realistic simulation.

      If the dam breaks the ccp's leaders will do it's darnest to cover it up. letting it go public will uncover the substandard materials and efforts of the dam's construction, show the incompetence and corruption of the ccp government and their instinctual response to a crisis by sweeping it under the rug and blaming someone else.
      some local authorities and civilians will organize their own individual evacuations. the peaks can only hold so much people in it. boats will be too risky in the first hours of the flood and china's air forceight get slowed down if not don't take off at all (I'll explain it below)
      the country's main police force might halt the evacuation, awaiting further orders from their government (why did i assume that they'll not help immediately? look at corona virus) i do hope they take the initiative to help since this is a tangible, immediate threat that cannot be controlled by killing witnesses like corona.
      china's air force may be slowed or ineffective/potentially in danger since they built theirs underground to conceal their weapons research and as a response to the cold war's nuclear threats
      the flooding will get in below and i pray for those unlucky enough to be buried inside. it's even worse if they stored their nuclear warheads inside; the radiation might leak and affect the neighboring countries if it gets out (like what happened to chernobyl's nuclear ash rain)

    For a good sense of what species devastation a collapse of the Three Gorges Dam would bring, albeit on a smaller scale, see the PBS 'American Experience' episode on Pennsylvania’s 1889 ‘Johnstown Flood’, narrated by famous and accomplished author, David McCullough. It’s a chilling story and it’s available on TH-cam. Just type in “Johnstown Flood David McCullough“ and it’ll come up.
    There’s also a Johnstown Flood documentary narrated by Richard Dreyfuss, but it didn’t drive the story home as well as the PBS 'American Experience' David McCullough documentary. Although you can see everything well enough, the American Experience’s video quality is not the greatest, but its informativeness paints a vivid mental picture that is hard to match.

    If the dam fails, it is very unlikely that the whole length will go at the same time. A gap will open and rushing water will cut at it, making it bigger, and bigger. But some of the dam will remain in place, at least for a while, slowing the flow to some extent.
    As the water surges down stream, it will erode a lot of soil. The video showed the water being directed by the existing terrain, but in truth, the water will cut through a lot of ridges, especially those on the outside of bends in the river. That means that some water will jump into areas that this video did not show.
    And the mud, rock, and debris that the flow of water will carry will be a massive amount. That material alone will do a huge amount of damage.
    I have been skeptical that the dam will collapse simply because I don't believe that any of the builders involved in the most prestigious, most visible, most potentially dangerous construction project in China's history would fail to understand that they would be executed if they cut corners on the dam's construction, and the cause of a failure was traced back to their work. Chinese builders are notorious for shoddy work, and cutting corners to increase their profits, but in this case, who would dare do that? The premier of China has personally been involved with this project. You would have to be suicidal to mess with him.

    • @johnnymnemonic69
      @johnnymnemonic69 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly. Why would china waste all that money to build a dam that fails on pourpose. Unless their building skills are that poor. I guess brand new apartment complexes are so cheaply built they are falling apart and collapsing after only a few years.

    • @deezynar
      @deezynar 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnnymnemonic69 Builders who cheat on apartment buildings are common in China. Builders who cheat on a massive state run project that the communist party is intimately tied to, know that they will be killed if their work fails.
      I'm not saying that I know the dam was well made. I'm just saying that I think self preservation, and fear, may have motivated builders who normally cheat, to do that project right.

    I read that 400 million people would be made homeless from the flooding if the dam collapsed. There is actually time to get many out of harm's way because of the distances involved but finding a place to put 400 million people would be a challenge, particularly if this happened in winter when people would need shelter from the cold.
    The question as to whether the dam could be destroyed by missiles, and some experts in Taiwan indicated that two missiles could do the job, while the designers indicated that the dam was designed to be able to survive a hit from a tactical nuclear weapon.

    The initial failure will probably not be a full collapse of the entire dam. The initial failure will either involve a limited section of the structure where it has cracked and weakened or the water will begin to escape at either or both ends of the dam as it overtops. Erosion will widen and deepen the breach, and within hours the maximum dump rate will be observed. It will be horrible and huge, but not on the scale shown here.

  • @JamesSavik
    @JamesSavik 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Dams rarely fail as completely as is simulated. If it were to fail, it would most probably fail in a specific spot due to earthquake damage new (new quake) or old (old quake that weakens structural piles). The spot failures would be 5 to 10% of the simulation- that's the good news. The bad news is that once the cork is out of the bottle those spot failures will grow larger but how fast or slow that happens is anybody's guess. It will be a rolling disaster that rapidly gets worse, peaks and then slows.
    The Chinese have some very good, smart engineers. They'll figure it out.

      Actually the most likely cause of collapse will be too much water to hold back due to rain. If you look at other videos showing the dam during high water you can actually see it bending due to the pressure. That type of collapse will take out most of the dam.

    fun fact, if a concrete structure is reinforced with steel, if failure occurs it will only be damaged or fail in one part, the other parts will work as they should. In the case of a dam of this size, if a failure occurs then what happens is a leak in the part of the dam where the water flows. will come out according to the size of the leak that occurs where the overflow of water is like the overflow of water when the spillways are opened, whereas in the simulation in this video the dam is destroyed from end to end as if it was bombed with a nuclear bomb and the possibility of this happening is very small.
