  • Oh, guys. Today I am spilling some secrets of submission! This turned out more candid than I had anticipated... I am covering, among other things: what submission is, how it works, agent styles for submission, why we don't talk about submission, submission seasons, how long submission takes, what it means when you've been on submission for a long time, what to do if you suspect your agent has bungled submission... yeesh.
    I hope you enjoy! Plus, I've got a whole separate video coming next week of practical tips for surviving submission.

    Though I'm only on my second draft of my WIP, watching videos like this gets me pumped for reaching submission even if it may be a long and depressing process. Thanks for all the insight, Alexa!

    This channel is honestly a godsend. I was wondering if you might talk a bit about what happens when your book doesn't sell? The idea of putting all that time and effort and love into a book and then having to backbench it is terrifying. I was wondering what your approach to your manuscripts are at that point.

    • @AlexaDonne
      @AlexaDonne  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sure! I can cover that topic in a future video. It's definitely rough, but it happens to all authors--even bestsellers sometimes don't sell subsequent books. I'll talk about it!

    Great advice. I'm wondering how writers get to auction if small rounds of submissions occur. For example, if an editor in the first round offers to buuy the book, will an agent then send out a second round if unsatisfied with the offer?

    I'm now up to 6 full requests and 4 of those have turned into rejections.
    What sucks is, I've received no feedback other than a stock answer along the lines of "loved the work...can't offer representation" or "enjoyed the read...can't see an editorial vision" 😪
    How do I interpret this?

  • @balrajsingh1492

    Hey Alexa I have a question. I guess there are online submittable sites of many publication houses where we can directly send the manuscripts to the publication houses through emails or by their submittable site without going into that agent-editor-proofreader things (I guess) what you know about it? Plz answer the question

    hello there ,first thank you for everything you are wonderful and honest , I have watched your videos and you represent the raw part in publishing , Go ahead , a salute for you .
    I have a request , I hope you do a video about copyright . cause my friend wanted to publish through amazon and they told her that the content review may ask for a copyright document proves that it's her own writing /work /. doing it with copyright.cov takes a lot's of time , consulting attorney takes money , what to do ? :(

    • @AlexaDonne
      @AlexaDonne  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh dear honestly I don't know if that's in my wheelhouse? As a traditionally published author, I don't have to procure my copyright; my publisher does that for me. I did a TH-cam search and found a few videos on the subject--a self-published person would definitely be the best resource!

    I have a background in the insurance and the music business. Let's just say that people aren't always remunerated appropriately ... I learned from one of your ytube vids. that a book must go through a literary agent in order to be received by a publisher. I can follow that. Here's the question; how does one know that said agent won't steal it?

    • @halfway7690
      @halfway7690 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The copyright is yours the moment you write the book. So they could be sued for that.

    If I wrote five complete chapters got 3 more months to go it is an nonfiction autobiography for young adult or YA. Is it a great idea to get a publisher?

    • @AlexaDonne
      @AlexaDonne  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You'll need to decide for yourself what publishing path you want to follow--traditional or self-published. If traditional, you need to complete the book, edit it, and then query agents. I have videos on querying agents that might help. I also have a video on how to be traditionally published, which goes over all the steps. If you decide to self-publish, I can recommend some TH-cam channels with good advice for self-publishing, and in that case you'd still want to finish the book, and you'd need to hire an editor, as well.
