I think the best advice from this video, which many amateur photographers seem to be unaware of, is "Bad weather is good weather." My favorite lighting is in the late afternoon/early evening when the sky is moderately overcast -- not solid gray, but overcast enough so that there are only slight shadows. I leave the color balance on auto, and in Photoshop a custom color temperature of around 4800 to 5200 usually seems to work well. If I use cloudy or shade, the resulting colors look way too warm.

Great tips. I think the best advice is just to get outside and make the most of each trip. You may go with one purpose in mind but be mindful enough and open to those unexpected possibilities - the key is to get out, use the gear and try things. Be creative while the Fall season is passing because it goes quickly and colors change from week to week.

I love shooting in the Fall as well. It's such a target rich environment, there are so many outstanding photos available. The challenge is to find them in the viewfinder! These are great ideas and inspirational as well. I always find your videos worth watching.

I used to set my WB to auto, but now I set my white balance so that my LCD matches what I see. The histogram is based on what the LCD is showing. If your LCD doesn't resemble something close to the actual scene, you could be blowing out one the RGB without knowing. This is specially true for the Red histogram. It's usually not critical unless you're shooting in places like Bryce Canyon, Fall colors, sunrise/sets, etc. Great video as usual!

  • @RamaSivamani

I think you can wing it if you live right next to a great location that you don't have to travel to. Then you can just wake up every morning and see what it's like at sunrise or just go there every evening and see what it's like at sunset. If you are travelling somewhere specifically for fall colors then planning it to make sure the foliage is right at the time that you go is important.

I also look at when a type of tree will colour. For example a oak. When I'm in the field during the year I try to see where those grow.

Thank You for the great checklist to plan and visualize before going. It is a great time to have a camera in hand at anytime. Not to cause any lack of sleep but with some cameras the night is as bright as day (almost) but on a clear or whispery cloudy night you get a vertical Milky Way before midnight just a few nights after a full moon to just a few nights before a full moon and the fall colors at night can make a foreground pop. Also with some moonlight a valley of fall colors and stars above are stunning. PA Grand Canyon is awesome with the contrast but bring bear spray!! Sometimes fields will be full of deer at night and the contrast of colors I have seen in the smokies while at campgrounds with people all in bed. LED light color temp is the same as moon light shining off the moon and a cloudy night is a natural softbox.

One of the things I love most about photography, as a serious hobby, is the fact that - instead of being aggressively competitive - so many pros and serious amateurs enjoy sharing their knowledge and experience with everyone else. Make the wonderful world of photography a better place, for everybody!
On ##3, one thing I love about "bad" weather is getting in there, while there are still heavy grey clouds, but the rain has stopped. The rain has washed all the micro particles out of the air, the air couldn't get clearer, and it's a stunning time to take a landscape shot - with the last of the clouds that caused it, still forming the sky, but the light coming in from behind the photographer, lighting up the foliage. Wet leaves, too - the perfect time to capture them!
##5 - do you shoot with two cards? Can you set one to RAW and the other to JPG/standard white balance? It's an interesting experiment - much of the time, there's no difference, sometimes the RAW beats the JPG, and sometimes the JPG beats the RAW image!

You are so right about that weather. I get excited when it's going to be cloudy all day because I can always find something to shoot weather it be wildlife or landscapes. When the sun gets to high it can ruin it all. I'm going to New River Gorge N. P. the third week of October to shoot some waterfalls after a few days in the Smokies , I hope to get some of those cloudy days then. Great video!

hi Mark, thanks for the vid, as I have been watching for some time I have built up a calendar of events and changes within the landscape (mainly on your advice) for now in the U.K. its fungi season, lots of the stuff coming in as the weather changes and the trees are not replacing but losing foliage, So after fungi its waterfalls in the Lake District within the next two weeks to grab the colours and due to the rain a decent flow rate. you are a great inspiration, once again Thanks.

Great video as per usual Pal... Autumn has been a bit of a let down for me over the years, I have this vision in my head which rarely matches reality... the advice about bad weather being good weather is a mantra that has kept me going for years.. Bad conditions don't exist in landscape photography , theres always a shot .. Well done man

Like you I had always just trusted the auto white balance until yesterday. I struggling to understand why the image on the back of my camera was not even close to what I was actually seeing while walking down a heavily forested path with lots of overhead foliage and rays of sunlight streaming through. The color palate was way off. First I checked the metering, which didn't have much effect. Then I got the insight to adjust the white balance and sure enough that was what was off. The auto white balance seems to do very well on my Sony A7R3 in bright light conditions, but in low light or high contrast scenarios, not so well.

Go local. For me this is the strategy this year. I checked a forest all year round and now I have a pretty good idea where and what can be shot. So my plan is to go to that specific location every couple of days.
Have no clue if is going to work (which is not really an issue as I am not a professional) but at least will give me a good amount of time outside. 🙂
The best thing about this is that the forest is 10 minutes from home.
Anyway, great one Mark. I have a pretty decent polarizer but actually I did not include it in my photography routine. Usually I simply forget about it.

A lot of good advice in this video. I live in NW Wisconsin, the lake effect from Lake Superior makes for color changes a different times and not just one big wave from north to south. So I go to State or more local color forecast websites for stages of color. Also, I don't use auto WB anymore, I now set my color temp using the Kelvin scale and get closer than auto white balance.

My biggest problem is planning because I get really excited in the summer to do fall photos and then I usually have a dip in my mental energy come fall just due to the reality of bipolar, and if I don't plan it beforehand and have a plan of action set up (packed duffel bag, equipment pre-calibrated), I'll just say forget it, I'm going back to bed. Once I get out there, I can find something to photograph. I'm great at just winging it while I'm there, so that part of winging it works for me sometimes. But if I don't have a plan, I don't go.

Hey Mark, thanks for the great advice! It helped me this year for sure! Especially on the “Not winging it” and the “Frame it up”. Makes a big difference. I did have a question though. There are certain compositions i love, where the main subject might be the stream by a set of trees in peak color. Is it ok to not get the full tree in frame? I struggle with this because i think you should, but then i would have to do a really wide angle and the subject, i feel, gets lost. I would love to get your take on that. Thanks again for all the great vids, keep em coming 😎

And then even if there is good colour, one big winter storm off the Atlantic and it’s all gone 🤦🏼‍♀️

Getting married during peak fall color this year.. but not going on a honeymoon. Aka the week off afterwards will be spent going to state parks all around me to capture fall foliage!

there are sites that provide current foliage info for many locations. don't depend on the average foliage dates. it can vary year by year,
