Where Did Santa Come From?

I'd never really thought about this until my niece brought it up. She wanted to know if Santa visited baby Jesus. What exactly does Santa have to do with the Christian tradition of Christmas? She also observed at the mall that Santa looked "unhealthy"...that's a nice way to put it!
