The current goes up, and the efficiency goes way down. When the core is saturated, it can no longer carry any more magnetic flux, and the windings act more like a resistor (the inductance goes down) than an inductor. In most cases, it behaves somewhat like a short circuit. Usually saturation is only an issue when the transformer is overloaded (such as, due to a downstream short circuit), when the voltage provided to the primary winding is too high, or when there is a DC component in the AC sine wave. (Transformers don't work well on DC, they need pulsed current, like from an AC sine wave, or a transistor that rapidly switches the current on and off.)
