    what i like:
    - explanation of symbols, annotations, elevations
    - detail-oriented look into sections of the plan, while explaining the materials involved and their dimensions or relations to other materials
    - well paced speed during explanation
    - no overusage of mouse movements.. your composure draws my attention
    keep it up

    Thank you! I'm a structural engineering student, and I learned a lot from this video. One observation: it is interesting that they use a W12X50 steel beam (min 31:28) on the upper left section of the building, but a W21X50 steel beam in the central area (min 31:50) of the building, even though they seem to be similar spans. Maybe it is related to the fact that the first one is supporting 11 7/8" deep TJIs with a lower tributary area, while the second one is supporting 13.5" deep Glulams with more tributary area? Even though the beams have the same linear weight, the moment of inertia (resistance of cross section shape to bending) of the WX21X50 is about 2.5 times higher than the moment of inertia for the W12X50, meaning the later would have about 2.5 times more deflection under identical loading conditions. It's interesting to think about why the beams are specified differently.

    Why do architects and engineers show headers and beams on a different floor than they are actually on?
    Very useful and well done. *liked*

    • @JohnTingerthal
      @JohnTingerthal  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Good question. It is just convention. Architects show things within the floor space, while structural engineers think of the floor as everything supporting the floor space.

    Interesting that the structural guy has decided to leave all the grid lines and dimensions to Arch. Personally, I think structural dwgs are far more important when it comes to preparing shop drawings. We would never do that in our office for a project of that scale.
