Mel was the master of the voice craft. How does one make a stutter charming? Simple. Make it the kind of grunting pigs normally do. Genius!
Huh? Mel didn’t even create the voice, Joe Dougherty who predated him as porky’s voice had the stutter first as shown in this video. I don’t know why Mel took credit for it
@@FreeSpiritPaulette Mel took the already existing gimmick and turned it into something much easier on the ears. Dougherty did his best, but boy, is it hard to listen to Porky in some of those early shorts. Mel improved the role in every aspect.
@@ProfCoolio yeah it just rubs me the wrong way that the way he framed it in interviews was as if he had this genius that he on his own came up with the voice originally, which we know factually is incorrect
He was fat, lost weight, and then regained it all by 2019.
Sunrise, sunset
i think new looney tunes was trying to be classic by using the old porky design but i think they made him a little too overweight
Rob Paulsen's version of Porky is when Porky is not performing. Love it!!😂😂
ALRIGHT, ALRIGHT Hello!
HAHA!!! Yes, me to. SOO Rob Paulsen. He had to be funny!!!🤣🤣🤣
It sounds more like a high pitch Yakko LMAO
Joe Dougherty was a little tough to understand, but you can tell the animators had fun making Porky move to his stutters. It's probably the funniest out of all of them, but not in a good way because I feel like i'm laughing at a man's (or a pig's) impairment.
I feel bad for Joe Dougherty, I've heard that stutters can be painful for the person suffering from the ailment, so to have to attempt to get lines out while controlling his stutter only to get fired due to the stutter must have been a crushing blow.
He worked real hard for the job
I also feel like they just wanted to make fun of his stutter, or maybe thought it’d be fitting to be a new shtick for the character.
You can genuinely hear his struggling when he's voicing Porky.
For me, almost no one beats Mel Blanc when it comes to the classic Warner Bros. characters, but if there’s one person who comes close, it’s Bob Bergen as Porky. Bob is incredibly spot-on as Porky and does a great job of keeping Porky’s legacy going.
While hiring a natural stutterer probably seemed logical in theory, in truth, it just feels wrong to have someone’s actual stuttering problem treated as a joke. The speeding technique actually works against Dougherty; it often sounds like he’s going to pass out any second.
As for the non-Bergen replacements: Burson sounds the closest to Blanc. Goldberg and Bergman’s voices are a bit too deep, and West’s is a bit too high, though they’re still alright. Paulsen and Noel Blanc have the stutter right, but neither comes particularly close to matching the actual speaking voice.
1. Mel Blanc
2. Bob Bergen
3. Greg Burson
4. Eric Goldberg
5. Jeff Bergman
6. Billy West
7. Joe Dougherty (at least his voice is original; the other 2 aren’t particularly good imitations)

No one can top Mel blanc. And his son
@@jordenlang1119 well that’s a very biased opinion don’t you think? “No one can top blanc nor his son”? That belittles every other voice actor to do the looney tunes and even rationally speaking if they gave more to the character or were genuinely better, you’d probably say Mel still couldn’t be beat. Granted he was excellent, but a lot of his voices were sped up (which don’t get me wrong doesn’t necessarily take away from the talent), but if any other of the voice actors listed here were the initial looney tunes voice actor, our nostalgic arses would probably say they were the best. With the exception of course of Joe doughtery.
"You thought I was gonna say son of a bitch" is a legendary line that will go down in history
My favourite line from Porky.
*Was running when he thought he was someone else because of Daffy*
"Wait a m-m--minute, my name i-i-i-i *Falls into a puddle of Mud* i-m-m-m-m-mud..."
Mel and Bob are just so good, I struggle to figure out who I like better. But I recall seeing Bob go into detail as to how he was able to mimic Mel's style for Porky, which I think really makes him a good replacement.
Bob has been imitating Porky since he was 5 years old.
Porky: It's a pain in the butt to be p-p-p-politically correct.
Speedy Gonzalez: You're telling me!
Shaggy: What kind of a performance do you call that? You made me sound like a total space cadet, man!
Matthew Lillard: I'm sorry you feel that way. I was just trying to be true to your character.
Shaggy: If you, like goof on me in the sequel, I'm coming after ya!
Scooby Doo: Reah, and ri'll rive you a Scooby Smack GRRR!!
Kate: There are some areas of the script I think we need to address. There's no heart, no cooperation, nobody learns anything.
Bugs: Daffy learns not to stick his head in a jet engine.
Kate: He's gone.
Bugs: No, Daffy always comes back. I just tell him how much I need him. We hug, we cry, I drop something heavy on him, I laugh.
Kate: The duck is history, okay? So the question is... how can I help you reposition your brand identity? Answer: We team you up with a hot female co-star.
Bugs: Usually... I play the female love interest.
Michigan J. Frog: Hello my baby, hello my honey, hello ragtime gal!
Kate: About the cross-dressing thing? In the past, funny. Today, disturbing.
Bugs: Lady, if you don't find a rabbit with lipstick amusing... you and I have nothing to say to each other.
Kate: Look, I'm trying to be nice... but I was brought in to leverage your synergy... and I am not going to let you or some wacky duck--
Bugs: Daffy.
Kate: Wacky, daffy, nutty, fruitcake, crispy over rice, it doesn't matter.
Bugs: Well, these matter. And THIS! And they say we get Daffy back. Right, boys?
Awards: We want Daffy! Bring him back! We love Daffy! Bring Daffy back!
Granny: Little Damian.
D.J: Hey, Granny. Hi, Tweety.
Tweety: How was work today?
D.J: ..Eventful.

When it comes down to it, Mel Blanc & Bob Bergen stand out as being the best voices for Porky. Mel laid the groundwork for all of the other VA's that would voice Porky. Bob Bergen pretty much made the role his own. It's why he's one of the longest running voices alongside Mel.
Mel Blanca replacing Joe Dougherty was reasonable. Having someone who have a real life stuttering will lead to issues in their performance. And to be honest, his Porky was a little harder to understand. It made much sense to have someone imitate a stutter while still be coherent.
“Mel Blanc”

Melissa Cooper I feel sorry for him. Mel took over and became the most famous voice actor ever and Joe faded into obscurity and wasn't heard from again until he died.
@@SavoxYT Ikr? I'll bet Dougherty was devastated when they told him the bad news. So I feel sorry for him too.

I never knew that Eric Goldberg the Animator voice Porky. You learn something new everyday.
I can see why Noel Blanc chose not to pursue a career in voice acting. He really wasn't very good at it. I don't mean compared to his father, either. I mean in general.
Well dang
He did an ok Taz
When Mel Blanc died, everyone just sort of assumed that Noel would take over all his characters. As if voice acting talent is a genetically inherited trait or something.
He did a good Bugs Bunny
Didn't know Joe D. went backwards in time lol
Bob Bergen"s Porky is worthy of Mel Blanc!

I hate to admit this, but, while Loonatics was a creatively bankrupt show and all, there are a few second season episodes that proved the idea COULD be done right. The Pinkster Pig episode was one of them. If only they fought versions of other Looney Tunes characters instead of tired cartoon villain archetypes played straight in the first place, it really could have appeased some of the haters and turned them into fans. They could have flipped the script and used an action show to be a loving parody and subversion of wacky cartoons. Took them too long and they only really did it with three or four episodes.
Porky's stuttering is the most endearing trait of Porky, never remove it.
god please remove it, its so offensive
Is Noel Blanc and Greg Burton's footage on mono or something? It seems to not play at all on mobile versions of the video.
You need headphones for that
Mel and Bob are the best voices for Porky.
And yet for some reason despite Bob voicing him for all these years they had Eric voice porky in Space Jam 2, but strangly still had Bob voice Tweety.... Who was in charge of casting for that movie?

The one casting choice that I'll admit I have trouble picturing is Jodi Benson as Babs. As amazing as she is, I don't really see her as the "Babs" type. I know your comment is a year old, but I totally agree. I am disabled (though I do not stutter), and seeing so many people here talk about someone's disability making them "difficult to work with" reeks of casual ableism.
