Created as a companion video to my series of DISNEY EVOLUTION videos (specifically 'Evolution of GOOFY Over 87 Years (1928-2019) Explained'), I take a look at the vocal evolution of the character as I compare the voices of all of Goofy's official voice actors over time, including Pinto Colvig, Stuart Buchanan, George Johnson, Bob Jackman, Jimmy Macdonald, Bill Lee, Hal Smith, Tony Pope, Will Ryan and Bill Farmer

Before you keep saying I “forgot”, I have not highlighted two Goofy voice artist in this video Bill Lee and Will Ryan, simply because their voice work is so minimal or so obscure that it’s either
A) too difficult to track down their work for inclusion
B) not substantial enough to even be notable enough to really be used
As I said in the video, this highlights “most” of the voice artists, not “all” of them.

@@flashfunk0373 I learned how to do the voice also, but probably because I have a deep voice. I also learned how to do Mickey Mouse and Scrooge McDuck voices. I'm now trying to imitate Donald Duck but his voice is difficult to imitate.
@@snakeeyes2551 Facts. It's pretty hard. I knew how to do Mickey when I was 11 but due to puberty, it's gonna be hard for me to do an impression of him. I know how to do Elmer Fudd, Sylvester, Daffy Duck, Marvin the Martian, Snagglepuss and Road Runner.
Bill Farmer is my favorite of Goof's voice, He's the closest to the original voice.

Bill farmer has been the voice of Goofy since I was a child. Of course, I also love the original Pinto Clovig too.
Bill Farmer is one of the only voice actors for a character whose newest voice is probably the best/most iconic
Same with Jim Cummings as Taz, Bob Bergen as Porky Pig and Jess Harnell as Secret Squirrel.
Pinto and Bill are the two best Goffy voice actors.

Bill Farmer is Goofy for me. With Kingdom Hearts being my main childhood game series and liking to watch Disney shows after school, he's my absolute favorite. Especially the later years of his career as Goofy really getting into his element with it and (as said in the video), making the voice his own.
Sounded like he was stressing his voice a little less too. Later animations sounded much more consistent, like you could tell he got past trying to emulate a voice if that makes sense.
Its hard to get a good Goofy voice, but Bill Farmer is easy the best of the bunch.

George Johnson is the kind of VA you’d get if you made a one-off gag starring a ‘suave Goofy’. Close enough vocal mannerisms to be recognizable. But completely different sound.
I love his personality and his voice, Goofy will always be one of my favourite cartoon characters of all time.

Underrated opinion: Tony pope is the most underrated goofy voice of all time. He’s so overlooked! He was in roger rabbit and sport goofy only but I enjoyed his performance so much! Everyone in the comments seems to agree that Bill Farmer is the best. And I'm of the same opinion. Bill's Goofy certainly has a special charm and the voice makes Goofy seem more dim-witted without being just plain dumb, if that makes sense. Like, Goofy isn't smart, but he's not an idiot either, just mostly hapless and clumsy.
I hope one day they bring back Sylvia and Max.

10:15 now this explains why I've obtained ever heard Bill Farmer as goofy. My parents got me a dvd box set of classic cartoons and all the voices sounded exactly the same. Cool how it was just a redub

Pinto Colvig is a classic and did a great job establishing Goofy's voice and made him the lovable goof that we all know in love today.
In terms of the stand ins during Colvig's era, Stuart Buchanan's pretty mediocre and sounds too dopey for my taste while Danny Webb (he's the one that filled in while Colvig was gone not George Johnsnon) is okay but sounds a bit too deep as Goofy. I can see why they minimized his dialogue during this time. Jimmy MacDonald sounds way too stupid and more like a generic idiot than Goofy. Bill Lee (who did the singing for Laugh, Laugh, Laugh / Jokes and Riddles song on that one album) was also okay for the singing but not very memorable. Bob Jackman's okay for the George Geef shorts but I can't imagine him fitting the traditional Goofy.
As for the post Colvig voices, it comes off as no surprise that Bill Farmer's my favorite of those guys. In fact, he's an example of the successor surpassing the original doing a great job capturing Colvig's mannerisms and voice while still making the voice his own with A Goofy Movie being one of these shinning examples. Hal Smith, Tony Pope, and Will Ryan (who did a few specials in the late 80s as Goofy) are okay too with Tony Pope being the best of the non-Farmer successors albeit a tad inconsistent at times.

While I was never a huge Goofy fan, Bill Farmer is MY Goofy. I had no idea he was doing the Mickey Shorts! he really flexed while voicing those shorts. Those shorts made me appreciate Goofy in a new way.

According to John Canemaker, Colvig's replacement in the 40s was named Danny Webb.
When you do Pete's voice, it sounds like Colvig did the voice in Klondike Kid and Building a Building.

Despite being born way later then the gen he started speaking, the VHS I had mostly contained a lot of goofy material. So my intro to the voice mostly came from the silent shorts and the goofy movies

I remembered that goofy (Bill Farmer) accidentally slipped and screamed and then Donald (Tony Anselmo and Daisy (Tress Macneille) said shhhh before Mickey (Wayne Allwine) and his friends surprised Minnie (Russi Taylor) for her birthday. Aside from Ryan and Lee, here are other voices and information you missed.
1. Richard Edwards voiced Goofy at the end of Mickey’s Trailer as well as a couple lines in The Whalers.
2. Johnson did not voice Goofy in Goofy and Wilbur. It was Jack Bailey.
3. Johnson also voiced Goofy in 1945’s No Sail in a case of a short being made for a few years.
4. MacDonald also voiced Goofy in Californy’er Bust and Lion Down.
5. Cactus Mack provided Goofy’s narration in Californy’er Bust.
6. Gilbert Mack voiced Goofy in the 1955 record Goofy the Toreador.
7. Peter Hawkins voiced Goofy in the 1966 series Disney Wonderland on ITV.
7. One of Colvig’s last roles as Goofy was a Soaky commercial featuring Goofy and Pluto, and the Telephone Pavilion at Expo 67.
8. Walker Edmiston voiced Goofy in the 1974 Christmas Carol record that was the basis for the 1983 Mickey’s Christmas Carol short.
9. Pope also voiced Goofy on the 1979 Mickey Mouse Disco record and in Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
10. Jack Wagner voiced Goofy on Disney On Ice shows, live entertainment in the parks, and live action segments for TV specials (I don’t recall any of them.)
11. Jason Marsden voiced Goofy in the storybook Me and My Dad.

@@jrl3432 Quick questions, where do you think Troodon2, HypeVoiceActing, and ManVoice got the ideas of John DiMaggio, Kevin Michael Richardson, and Frank Welker as Tigger (I know ManVoice technically said “if he were to use a voice similar to what he uses for Scooby-Doo”) but surely there are other voices Frank has done that are similar to Tigger. And was Jeff Bergman suggested by someone else or was that an idea by Michaelsar?
@@ToonyKid If I had to guess, I’d say it’s because they’ve all done voices that sound similar to some of Jim Cummings’ voices to a degree. Also, I’m pretty sure Jeff as Tigger was Mike’s idea, since he did the voice of Fleegle in that Banana Splits cartoon from “Web Premiere Toons”.
@@jrl3432 Not too long ago, I just had a fun idea for an interactive game based on Pooh’s Heffalump Movie (a childhood favourite of mine). It involves Mama Heffalump (Lumpy’s mother) tossing the oak trees aside from the ditch while Tigger, Piglet, and Eeyore have to dodge them while bouncing. And whoever gets hit by a flying tree is out of the game! (I can imagine Eeyore being the first one to get hit) On some occasions, Rabbit would pop in and detest the idea of such a dangerous game but Tigger tries to convince him it’s fun. I can also imagine a “Nick Jr” version with Pablo from “The Backyardigans” in place of Tigger, Dora the Explorer in place of Piglet, Tuck from “Wonder Pets” in place of Eeyore, and Uniqua (also from the same show as Pablo) in place of Mama Heffalump, but no Rabbit. And there’d also be a “Looney Tunes” version with Daffy as Tigger, Tina Russo as Piglet, Taz as Eeyore, Granny as Mama Heffalump, and Marvin as Rabbit. And the music that plays during all 3 versions of the game is “Take 5” by Paul Desmond. Because, this may seem odd, but whenever I hear that song, I can’t help but picture Mama Heffalump tossing the trees around to the music. What do you think?

It's impossible for me to think of George Geef as "Goofy." I'll accept him as a relative, but he doesn't have nearly any of the hallmarks of the true Goof.
Except Disney says he is Goofy. We need to look at these cartoons as “actors” who portray various “characters” in their short films. George Geef is just one of the many characters portrayed by the actor.
But, which one did the Goofy yell?

Why did they redub classic shorts?
I believe at one point they wanted entire consistency across the brand and all media. Essentially there’d be “one voice” for all of the characters, so when they re-released a bunch of old cartoons for TV syndication, they got overdubbed (they also cut the shorts down heavily). Not a huge fan of that production at all.

Pinto may be the original, but I prefer Bill. He gives the character more personality and memorability.
Whilst Pinto Colvig (who incidentally, was the second person to voice Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, along with Practical Pig, Grumpy, Sleepy and Stromboli) set the characteristic tone for Goofy’s voice, I think that Bill Farmer is, by any standard, the best. Usually the original voice, for me is the always the best, but in the earlier Goofy shorts, he was just the fall guy. Accordingly, that led to his personality lacking in depth and emotion, so characteristically there was no where for the voice actor to go and no range to emote, beyond the jolly, oblivious goof. The others were very poor imitations, McDonald and Smith being the worst, in my view. As the personality of Goofy has been developed, especially since 1990, he is no longer there just for the comedic effect. Farmer’s voicing of the character maintains the Colvig foundations, but as an actor, Farmer’s range to emote Goofy has much greater breadth. He can do the typical comical, that we all expect, but he can also do angry, happy, sad and tender, without loosing the character. ‘A Goofy Movie’ showcases this perfectly.

You know, I once had this idea about a Winnie the Pooh series airing on Disney Junior in late 2016/early 2017 with a concept similar to shows like The Backyardigans and Chloe’s Closet, y’know where they use their imaginations to go on all sorts of adventures (flying to the moon, performing in a band, etc). I can’t think of a phrase for starting the imagination adventure but I have one for ending the adventure. I was thinking something like “The day is done, we’ve had some fun!” or something like that. It would have the same composers and style of music as Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, complete with leitmotifs for each of the characters. For example, I think the music that played in the “Goofy on mars videoclip” video from 0:01 to 0:43 would be a perfect leitmotif for Tigger because he’s bouncy. Also, a catchphrase I made up for Rabbit. “No matter how much we try, we just can’t seem to get it right!” Like the idea? I came up with it back in 2017.

Funny enough, I actually had a couple of ideas for shows myself just recently. First of all, I’m a huge fan of the new “Looney Tunes Cartoons” shorts on HBO Max, and I was really bummed to learn that production on them just wrapped up. So, I thought it’d be cool if they made another series of shorts inspired by Chuck Jones’ cartoons from the ‘50s (seeing as how “Looney Tunes Cartoons” is heavily influenced by Bob Clampett’s work from the ‘40s).
Then, I saw the trailer for “Jellystone!” and was really underwhelmed (which is sad because I was really looking forward to it initially), so I came up with the idea for what I call “Hanna-Barbera’s Critter Comedies”, which would be a series of cartoons starring any of H-B’s funny animal characters (Yogi, Huckleberry, Snagglepuss, Quick Draw and so forth), and it would very similar in style and tone to the original cartoons (like the new WB shorts).
How do those sound to you? Personally, I think they’d be really cool!

House of Mouse is literally just repeats of the Mickey MouseWorks cartoons. I don't include every single record, unless they are relevant or feature a different voice artist. I cannot include every single project that every single character has ever appeared in.
