  • An original member of the gospel group The Primitive Quartet has died.
"This was a special place to Norman I know that," says bass vocalist Larry Riddle, walking with his fellow band mates at Hominy Valley Singing Grounds in Candler.
They're mourning the loss of a vital voice. Norman Wilson died Wednesday at the age of 70.
He suffered a heart attack while bear hunting with friends in Graham County. Riddle says the tenor died with a smile on his face.
"He looked back at the bear, slumped down, took three deep breaths and was gone," he tells us.

"Every time someone calls about it, it's like waking up from a dream again," says Randy Fox, who plays the upright bass. "He had a very distinguishable voice."
"Loved to sing gospel music, loved the people, loved to travel every part of it," Larry explains.
"A lot of people called him smiley," Fox says. "He would always smile especially when we were singing."
Remembering the smiles, gives them solace through the tears. They say Norman's passion for sharing the gospel lives on.
"And I hope he will remind us of the hope that lies within us that there is a better meeting place, and we will see him again," Fox says.
The Primitive Quartet says it will continue with the help of other singers. They're scheduled to perform this weekend at Hominy Valley Singing Grounds.
Riddle says it's what Norman would have wanted.

What a terrible loss. He was one of my favorites of all time. I've been a Primitive fan since first seeing them on tv on Sunday mornings, as a child back in the '70's. Riddle brothers, keep the faith, stay the course. The new additions you've added are fine singers.
