    there is nothing i enjoy more than gospel piano/ organ...the subtlety and nuance of it is mind blowing, its music theory from the ether of my African american people......this is my roots, and i feel it every-time a Hammond starts talking!!!!!!!

    I find when one has formal training in reading music and then learns to play by ear in playing gospel music, as this person obviously has, the quality is superb and is much cleaner. It just sounds better. God bless you, sir.

    Sir, you play!! You have truly blessed me. I search through TH-cam for gospel piano techniques and I'm never really presented with any actual information or anything that is of use to me. But your musicality and sensitivity to the music as well as your factual knowledge behind the theory of what you played truly helped me! I wish you had more videos of gospel piano techniques. Or if I could have a chance to learn from you.
    I am a uprising sophomore in college for music education. I started on the piano but transitioned to voice being my primary instrument but I have always wanted to learn how to effectively minister on the piano/organ so that I could play in my church!
    Again thank you for the blessing!

    Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and inspiration! I play at a church, so whatever you share with me gets shared with the 100 or so people that hear it at church too, so, thanks from them too.

    Bro I was checking out this video to send to one of my piano students, and I'm all nodding like "good fundamental stuff, I like this" and then when you do that passage toward the end with that modal D natural to E natural subs heading to the Fminor, with the pretty inside voices, I'm like "ahh hell nah now I gotta pause it and get to the piano and figure out what this dude just did." hahahaha beautiful substitutions man I wasn't ready for that. Awesome.

    This is an outstanding tutorial, young man. It's very clear and direct and supposes the person watching already has a working knowledge of chords and harmony. Many of the gospel how-to videos are not well articulated and spend time on spelling out each chord and not telling how it functions. God bless you and keep up the good work.

    Excellent. When he's playing and calling out what he's doing I'm reminded of that scene near the end of the film version of "Amadeus" when Mozart is dictating to Salieri and for once Salieri has a vision of what it's like to work at this much higher level. : ) Seriously it's great stuff, traditional, sophisticated, and super-tasty. Much appreciated.

    Something about this music that reminds me of "real" church worship. Precious Lord was one of my mothers' favorite hymns before she past 8 years ago...still miss her dearly...she would love this also... This guy is phenomenal! Wonder how he learned to play like that? Would love to hear full songs by Damien!

    08:38 that's an echo of Bach...that proves how monumental and actually "classic" gospel music is at it's core. People often refer to gospel as a sort of transition from classical to folk but it's actually an evolution of really solid classical music.

    • @dashiekwoodard3621
      @dashiekwoodard3621 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Warren Roberts he’s referring to the Picardy Third. All music breaks down to Three Blind Mice, so while a direct lineage to Bach is a steep conclusion, it does have some merit.

    Really enjoyed listening to you play, and your style of doing old hymns in a blues or jazz feeling. I love the old hymns too, and change the chords around to either strum or pick them in my own way, but unlike you, I am not a trained musician, just a country picker. I also love "Precious Lord," too, especially played solo. Thank you for sharing your words and music. God bless.

    From taking piano lessons as a kid and only really learning to read sheet music, for a while I played hymns to accompany the congregation. I experimented just a little by adding about a thimble-full of what this master is showing us. To learn a nice piece for the prelude, offertory, postlude, etc., I had to practice all week. I really want to study music theory more - at least have a better knowledge of chords. Man, I wish I could take lessons from Damien Sneed. Well, I guess I just did! =)
