Ya, I guess he really misjudged that amazing Sherpa. It is clear that they are not valued the way they should be, and in the meantime the Sherpas are risking their lives for idiots who have no experience and should not be allowed on the moutain in the first place. The only truth you’ll get from Everest is from the Sherpa people. Everyone else there is on an ego trip trying to do something thousands of others have already done.

Great documentary! I’m addicted to Everest stories. The human psych is so complicated. All of his baggage culminated in this. Hopefully he can realize he has everything he’s looking for right at home.
Absolutely agree….well said! I’ve been so fascinated with Everest and have watched countless videos but this one really hit me hard! Both the hardship of climbing it and the emotional epiphany he had.
This hubris of this guy. He is so self-unaware. He starts his climb by lecturing another climber that “you don’t belong on Everest”. He drones on about his father dying when he was young, but leaves his children for this vanity project. Talks about his abilities, but uses supplemental Os and is fed by his Sherpa above Camp IV. He had to make a phone call from the summit because… well, we all know that guy. Manages to insult the Mountain God. Then he takes a helicopter out of base camp rather than walking out! It would have been perfect if, as Ant was limping down from Camp IV, some climber told him “you don’t belong on this mountain”. What I do give Ant credit for is documenting (and releasing) this series of failures.

I'd like to see you give out hugs to someone who's the reason you can't feel your freezing fingers. This was the first time I’ve found myself rooting for the mountain! I’m amazed he could climb at all, what with carrying an ego as weighty as his appears to be.

He needs to push himself more and more to break away from his family, that he chose to have, I might say, and go on these life risking trips? The real survivor of this story is his wife, back at home raising 3 kids alone, while he's self absorbed.

yes!! A person's life is not all their own once they bring kids into the world. Unfortunately all I saw was a man who was incredibly selfish to leave his VERY young children & fam he valued so much. He could have died in that bottle-neck going back down. The real Beauty in his life wasnt that awesome view he saw all around him for a few moments but his supportive & loving fam he had back home. It was an expensive thrill. What a priority....He reached the top but I dont value him as any greater, stronger or anything other than being a fool.
I encourage anyone reading this to watch the documentary on Netflix on the female Sherpa who climbed Mt Everest ten times...very motivational documentary...a MUST SEE..
They have 3 small kids and he felt comfortable spending all that money to potentially leave his wife a widow and his kids fatherless. For what??? A feeling? My husband tries this nonsense with me it’s getting real ugly.
Comments like this one, while I understand a woman’s nesting instinct and desire for security and safety, makes me seriously question whether I should ever get married. To have someone “stop” you from achieving your goals, is not very conducive to a healthy relationship. I would feel like somebody is nagging me.
When you have kids, a person’s priorities needs to change. Their needs become more important. A kid needs their dad alive, not a dad proud of some 2 month trek up a body infested mountain. He wasnt called off to war, to be a man and protect the nation. My hearts desire is hike the Appalachian trail but I have firmly moved that goal to after my kids are way older.
I loved it how at the bottom of climb Ant was taking the piss out of his Sherpa but at top that Sherpa is spoon feeding him to keep him alive... I don't like this man at all. He's arrogant, selfish, narcissistic and reckless with everyone else's lives because they were concerned about the weather, rightly so, and they weren't going at the pace he wanted. He wanted the mountain all too himself and was throwing a fit that other people were there for the same reason he was. Yes it has become crowded which is a whole other problem in itself, but they don't take reservations for one to the top of the world. Finally, he was constantly touching his sherpa and invading his personal space. It was creepy and annoying.
I thought he was great and not arrogant at all. Inexperienced idiots who have no physical or mental ability to be there & hold others up or freeze up have ZERO business being there. Every min is precious, their selfishness causes others to lose their life. He was prepared and very humble, showed great vulnerability.

This is his first time at Mt Everest, and on the first climb he is already saying” if you can’t get up this, you can’t get up Everest “. I don’t think people who like hardcore challenges think the same beige way you or I do. He was in the armed forces, likes isolation and climbed Everest. Not all of us are content to be boring. His wife married him knowing the deal and had three kids with him. We all die and leave loved ones behind,.. but this guy lived so any negative comments are really pointless. If you don’t have the adventure spirit and can’t handle the thought of death, then don’t do it.

People can summit, but getting back down is another thing. Getting down is when most people die. After climbing for hours, you still need to climb even more hours to get down, and some people get exhausted and cannot get down.

I realized a while back that I will never do Everest, because it's become such a commercialized death trap. People go there with the expectation of "dying if they have to," and don't care about anyone else on that mountain. Nope, no thank you.

One thing I have noticed about these Himalayan expeditions is that the Sherpas conserve their energy by limiting any communication while all these Western climbers are already punting heavy by camp 3 because they are already thinking about uploading their journey on YT

The Sherpas are there to earn money. They don't do it out of the goodness of their heart. Also, it was the sherpas that wanted to cut the guy off the mountain.
Best documentary I’ve ever seen is on Netflix, called Mountain Queen. Lhakpa Sherpa made the Everest summit 10 times and added K2 with that. She even made the summit once with her period. And another summit unknowingly that she was pregnant.

What is the horrible truth part? Watching someone die, or nearly making orphans of your children? Several years ago, I wanted to climb in the Himalaya. A friend who had climbed there talked me out of going. He said the level of risk simply isn't worth it, and I decided he was right. Life is a gift from God, and I don't have the right to be irresponsible with that gift. I still climb, but well within my limit.

I have watched just about every video on Mt Everest, and this is the first time I stopped watching a video. What a narcissistic personality. Whatever happened to “you don’t judge a book by its cover”. Those are his words not mine. You have all the inklings of a bully. I’m glad I stopped watching.
I understand this man's depth & tragedy so well. I lost my parents around the same age and have gone through life alone. I strive in solitude and am very successful in what I do. It's a club that not many could be a part of. We find beauty where others find despair.
You cannot use past tragedies as a justification to act in a certain way as an adult or to risk everything to climb Everest and potentially perish in the process. As someone like Ant Middleton already has a family, he ought to be aware of and cognizant of his priorities, refrain from looking for comfort elsewhere, and assert that it's all about freedom.
Mountain climbing is for experts, not for people going there for the sake of reaching the summit without the preparation, training and skills. Because most people manage to survive, others think they can do it. Unfortunately they don't. Greedy guides don't care whether their clients know what they are doing or not.

Well... In that kind of situation... if you don't appear to have this "ptsd" that means you have lost your situational awareness that means greater chance of death if you are unlucky. If it's at your local park path someone behave like this, that is PTSD for sure. But somewhere there's dead body around, what would you expect??? This kind of "ptsd" may save your life.
He wasn't the highest person in the world. Planes fly at higher altitudes, which means that hundreds , maybe thousands of people were higher than he was at the same time.
I'm sure everyone is aware of that. When people say "Ussain Bolt is the fastest man alive", we know they're talking about running, not people in cars or on horses.

I met a Polish climber during International film festival and he was the fifth climber to do all of the highest mountains of the world . The men was 5’7 maybe 140 pounds nobody could tell he was one of the great climbers until you looked into his eyes of steel. Looks can be very deceiving.

You climbed with Madison Mountaineering…..you were in great hands the whole time. It’s disgusting these first time climbers paying big bucks to get dragged up the hill, causing unnecessary bottlenecks. Nepal government should start vetting climbers. If it’s a money issue, just charge more for licenses….people can get sponsors to help pay if there are less people allowed to climb. I watched Ryan’s video and thought maybe I could summit if I work towards…..after watching your video, they is no way I would try! I was a Marine and hiked with packs a lot, and did strenuous things for many years…..nothing like this. This video had some serious 1996 vibes. No sun glasses? Not very smart dude!
Who knows what motivates people to take risks like that, but did you ever see Flying Wallendas? The whole family takes incredible risks like tightroap walking over Niagara Falls without any saftey nets. What I've read, Mount Everest is a dump of trash and dead bodies. What a lovely site to see. Beauty is hiking to the top of an Adirondack Mt. at the hight of fall when the trees just turned to their full autum colors.

Ant Middleton may be one of the guys who attempted to reach the summit of Everest and succeeded in making a safe return home. I hope it's enough to teach him the most difficult lesson possible about life and death. As a married father of young children, he ought to consider his priorities and concentrate on leading a secure, healthy, and fulfilling life rather than taking needless chances like scaling Mount Everest or perhaps the K2.

I had to marvel at the fact that when he was on Everest, he got himself into a precarious situation and was talking about his family...his wife and how scared he was. Right! He didn't care about his family. He went on to climb extensively. He just doesn't care about anyone but himself.

@@markturner977 Yes, well said. Gawd there are some utter tools on here. The sherpas are there to do a job and earn good money. It is an unwritten rule that you cannot help someone else down (even the sherpas were going to cut that guy off), since you can barely keep yourself alive. Also, many people will fly out of base camp due to being weakened, time constraints, for the thrill etc. The climb is done already. Most of the tools on here would never get to experience anything like this in their tiny little lives. Ant has an ego, it is what it is, but he is ex SAS and has done things (saved myriad lives) that majority of people will never do. I think he can be forgiven for having an ego.
I feel like some ppl climb to prove something to themselves while others are just trying to prove something to everyone else. I’m not sure if the latter ever get fulfilled. Great filmmaking though. Truly enjoyed it.

This hubris of this guy. He is so self-unaware. He starts his climb by lecturing another climber that “you don’t belong on Everest”. He drones on about his father dying when he was young, but leaves his children for this vanity project. Talks about his abilities, but uses supplemental Os and is fed by his Sherpa above Camp IV. He had to make a phone call from the summit because… well, we all know that guy. Manages to insult the Mountain God. Then he takes a helicopter out of base camp rather than walking out! It would have been perfect if, as Ant was limping down from Camp IV, some climber told him “you don’t belong on this mountain”. What I do give Ant credit for is documenting (and releasing) this series of failures.

This was the first time I’ve found myself rooting for the mountain! I’m amazed he could climb at all, what with carrying an ego as weighty as his appears to be.
So interesting how he thought his Sherpa companion did not appear like he was able to even climb the mountain. This comment really caught my attention...
He needs to push himself more and more to break away from his family, that he chose to have, I might say, and go on these life risking trips? The real survivor of this story is his wife, back at home raising 3 kids alone, while he's self absorbed.

A person's life is not all their own once they bring kids into the world. Unfortunately all I saw was a man who was incredibly selfish to leave his VERY young children & fam he valued so much. He could have died in that bottle-neck going back down. The real Beauty in his life wasnt that awesome view he saw all around him for a few moments but his supportive & loving fam he had back home. It was an expensive thrill. What a priority....He reached the top but I dont value him as any greater, stronger or anything other than being a fool.
I encourage anyone reading this to watch the documentary on Netflix on the female Sherpa who climbed Mt Everest ten times...very motivational documentary...a MUST SEE..

When you have kids, a person’s priorities needs to change. Their needs become more important. A kid needs their dad alive, not a dad proud of some 2 month trek up a body infested mountain. He wasnt called off to war, to be a man and protect the nation. My hearts desire is hike the Appalachian trail but I have firmly moved that goal to after my kids are way older.
If your goal is to place yourself in a life threatening situation just to brag about it later, then yes, stay away from marriage and kids.
I loved it how at the bottom of climb Ant was taking the piss out of his Sherpa but at top that Sherpa is spoon feeding him to keep him alive... Beautiful transition from one world to another...yeah it's all about you Ant... "I'm the highest person in the world" not "wow how beautiful is this"... Without those Sherpas you were toast... Well you wanted to be last and it nearly got you killed...

@@w1lf1ewoo Maybe he wasn’t ’taking the piss’ out of em but he did pretty much say “I’m not one to judge a book by its cover but this guy looks like he has no business on the worlds tallest mountain.” I think he was trying to draw attention to the fact the unassuming stature of sherpas when in reality they are the best mountaineers on the tallest mountains in the world. He didn’t put it very elegantly, but after trying to read his book I’m not surprised by that.

The camera man and the sherpa could have made it without Ant but Ant couldn't have made it without them.
I don't like this man at all. He's arrogant, selfish, narcissistic and reckless with everyone else's lives because they were concerned about the weather, rightly so, and they weren't going at the pace he wanted.
He wanted the mountain all too himself and was throwing a fit that other people were there for the same reason he was. Yes it has become crowded which is a whole other problem in itself, but they don't take reservations for one to the top of the world.
Finally, he was constantly touching his sherpa and invading his personal space. It was creepy and annoying.
I thought he was great and not arrogant at all. Inexperienced idiots who have no physical or mental ability to be there & hold others up or freeze up have ZERO business being there. Every min is precious, their selfishness causes others to lose their life. He was prepared and very humble, showed great vulnerability.

I don’t think people who like hardcore challenges think the same beige way you or I do. He was in the armed forces, likes isolation and climbed Everest. Not all of us are content to be boring. His wife married him knowing the deal and had three kids with him. We all die and leave loved ones behind,.. but this guy lived so any negative comments are really pointless. If you don’t have the adventure spirit and can’t handle the thought of death, then don’t do it.

People can summit, but getting back down is another thing. Getting down is when most people die. After climbing for hours, you still need to climb even more hours to get down, and some people get exhausted and cannot get down.

I realized a while back that I will never do Everest, because it's become such a commercialized death trap. People go there with the expectation of "dying if they have to," and don't care about anyone else on that mountain. Nope, no thank you.

One thing I have noticed about these Himalayan expeditions is that the Sherpas conserve their energy by limiting any communication while all these Western climbers are already punting heavy by camp 3 because they are already thinking about uploading their journey on YT

Best documentary I’ve ever seen is on Netflix, called Mountain Queen. Lhakpa Sherpa made the Everest summit 10 times and added K2 with that. She even made the summit once with her period. And another summit unknowingly that she was pregnant.

What is the horrible truth part? Watching someone die, or nearly making orphans of your children? Several years ago, I wanted to climb in the Himalaya. A friend who had climbed there talked me out of going. He said the level of risk simply isn't worth it, and I decided he was right. Life is a gift from God, and I don't have the right to be irresponsible with that gift. I still climb, but well within my limit.

I have watched just about every video on Mt Everest, and this is the first time I stopped watching a video. What a narcissistic personality. Whatever happened to “you don’t judge a book by its cover”. Those are his words not mine. You have all the inklings of a bully. I’m glad I stopped watching.
I understand this man's depth & tragedy so well. I lost my parents around the same age and have gone through life alone. I strive in solitude and am very successful in what I do. It's a club that not many could be a part of. We find beauty where others find despair.
You cannot use past tragedies as a justification to act in a certain way as an adult or to risk everything to climb Everest and potentially perish in the process. As someone like Ant Middleton already has a family, he ought to be aware of and cognizant of his priorities, refrain from looking for comfort elsewhere, and assert that it's all about freedom.
Mountain climbing is for experts, not for people going there for the sake of reaching the summit without the preparation, training and skills. Because most people manage to survive, others think they can do it. Unfortunately they don't. Greedy guides don't care whether their clients know what they are doing or not.

Well... In that kind of situation... if you don't appear to have this "ptsd" that means you have lost your situational awareness that means greater chance of death if you are unlucky. If it's at your local park path someone behave like this, that is PTSD for sure. But somewhere there's dead body around, what would you expect??? This kind of "ptsd" may save your life.
He wasn't the highest person in the world. Planes fly at higher altitudes, which means that hundreds , maybe thousands of people were higher than he was at the same time.
I'm sure everyone is aware of that. When people say "Ussain Bolt is the fastest man alive", we know they're talking about running, not people in cars or on horses.

I met a Polish climber during International film festival and he was the fifth climber to do all of the highest mountains of the world . The men was 5’7 maybe 140 pounds nobody could tell he was one of the great climbers until you looked into his eyes of steel. Looks can be very deceiving.

You climbed with Madison Mountaineering…..you were in great hands the whole time. It’s disgusting these first time climbers paying big bucks to get dragged up the hill, causing unnecessary bottlenecks. Nepal government should start vetting climbers. If it’s a money issue, just charge more for licenses….people can get sponsors to help pay if there are less people allowed to climb.
I watched Ryan’s video and thought maybe I could summit if I work towards…..after watching your video, they is no way I would try! I was a Marine and hiked with packs a lot, and did strenuous things for many years…..nothing like this. This video had some serious 1996 vibes. No sun glasses? Not very smart dude!
Who knows what motivates people to take risks like that, but did you ever see Flying Wallendas? The whole family takes incredible risks like tightroap walking over Niagara Falls without any saftey nets. What I've read, Mount Everest is a dump of trash and dead bodies. What a lovely site to see. Beauty is hiking to the top of an Adirondack Mt. at the hight of fall when the trees just turned to their full autum colors.

Ant Middleton may be one of the guys who attempted to reach the summit of Everest and succeeded in making a safe return home. I hope it's enough to teach him the most difficult lesson possible about life and death. As a married father of young children, he ought to consider his priorities and concentrate on leading a secure, healthy, and fulfilling life rather than taking needless chances like scaling Mount Everest or perhaps the K2.

I had to marvel at the fact that when he was on Everest, he got himself into a precarious situation and was talking about his family...his wife and how scared he was. Right! He didn't care about his family. He went on to climb extensively. He just doesn't care about anyone but himself.

16:10 this is disgraceful behavior. Who speaks to other people like that? You have no idea who this person is and how what you told her could have a negative impact. Why didn’t you mind your own business? You go on one of the most touristic areas in the world and you don’t expect bottlenecks?

@@markturner977 Yes, well said. Gawd there are some utter tools on here. The sherpas are there to do a job and earn good money. It is an unwritten rule that you cannot help someone else down (even the sherpas were going to cut that guy off), since you can barely keep yourself alive. Also, many people will fly out of base camp due to being weakened, time constraints, for the thrill etc. The climb is done already.
Most of the tools on here would never get to experience anything like this in their tiny little lives. Ant has an ego, it is what it is, but he is ex SAS and has done things (saved myriad lives) that majority of people will never do. I think he can be forgiven for having an ego.
He got a lift because of frostbite and snow blindness.
I feel like some ppl climb to prove something to themselves while others are just trying to prove something to everyone else. I’m not sure if the latter ever get fulfilled. Great filmmaking though. Truly enjoyed it.

This documentary did nothing to sway my opinion about the sheer idiocity of climbing mt. Everest. Sheer madness.
I was a bit alarmed at your comment of " just ignore it don't think too much about it" in reference to the worsening weather ....... it's that sort of recklessness that looses lives
I think that he spent too much much time on the summit. That’s why he wasn’t first in the cue to get down.
