    Look Who's Back (German: Er ist wieder da, lit. 'He's Here Again' pronounced [ʔeːɐ̯ ʔɪst ˈviːdɐ daː]) is a 2015 German satirical comedy film directed by David Wnendt,[3] and based on the bestselling[4] satirical 2012 novel of of the same name about Adolf Hitler by Timur Vermes.[5][6][7] The film features unscripted vignettes of Oliver Masucci as Hitler interacting with ordinary Germans while in character, interspersed with scripted storyline sequences.[8] It was listed as one of eight films that could be the German submission for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 89th Academy Awards, but it was not selected.[9]

    The storytelling style of this movie is a true masterpiece. It hooks you in with the comedy and goes hard into the philosophical commentary in the end. Love how they had the balls to have hitler win in the end too. Not too many movies where the antagonist wins.

      In my opinion Hitler is the protagonist in this movie. Protagonist doesn't always mean good guy and antagonist doesn't always mean bad guy. To me, protagonist means main character and antagonist is simply the main opposition. Protagonist and Antagonist should simply refer to the role of a character, not whether their personality, goals or intentions are in the side of good or evil

    The movie starts funny, but then when you realize something is off, your eyes widen right fucking open. Spoilers: When he stares silently at the crowd in “Woah, Dude!” You know he’s going to do a speech, and expect blatant laughter or for them to kick him off, ultimately ending in a bad ending for Hitler, but no, people agree with him, and start saying “He’s right on that”, and then you see newspapers about him and youtube vids about him, you realize this is just history repeating itself. He’s shown on national tv killing a dog, but with the release of his book, he regains his reputation. When he recruits people from Facebook, if you know about history, you realize this is basically the Browncoats, except with black sweaters. Then he rises to power, riots and protests break out, he’s seen as a national sensation, and no one knows he’s about to retake control over Germany.

    What an incredibly poor take. You just pretty much said "Hitler bad".
    (Edit, just to clarify I'm not coming out in support of Hitler, I'm Polish)
    This movie does more than reveal that some people hold opinions similar to Hitler. It reveals that EVERYBODY has a part of them that is just like Hitler, and that will follow a man like Hitler. It reveals that once certain conditions are met, humans can't help but look to a man who will set things straight with an iron fist.
    As such, it doesnt reveal something bad about white nationalism or the far right, it reveals how human priorities change with the conditions that surround them.
    Peter Thiels take on this is that democracy only works when the deal is "you get more and I get more". But in a stagnant world someone will start getting less. This will inevitably lead to the scramble to secure as much as possible. Thiel believes that in developed economies this takes the form of fascism, while undeveloped economies turn communist.
    Furthermore, the movie doesnt humanize Hitler. It just doesnt dehumanize him. He was a man who did what he did out of deep love for his people (tho this doesnt make his actions right). Seeing him with those simple human traits says more about cultures where he has become a comical byword for boogeyman, than anything else.

    The movie is a masterpiece, especially if you read all the behind the scenes articles of the actors and producers. They themselves say how surprised they were that only 1 person stood up against „Hitler“ while all the other people smiled and waved at him, and even agreed with all the racist stuff he said. There was also one scene they set up at a public viewing of a football game, where a paid actor hired by them was going around saying things like „fuck Germany, you suck, I hope you lose etc.“ and the guy playing Hitler deliberately provoked the crowd by saying things like „Are you just going to accept that?“. In the end they started to physically attack the actor and the film crew‘s security had to step in, otherwise they would‘ve beat him pretty bad. The whole crew was pretty shocked after that event.
    It‘s a bit sad that all of this behind the scenes stuff is in German, so a lot of people will be left out.

It makes a point which everyone fears to admit: Nazis weren't monsters, they were people not diffrent than everyone of us. I really want to add what I think about the film as I watched only a couple hours ago and everything's still fresh. What I feel is the the movie is extremely well done with it as the video says starting out as a bit more of a comedy then it starts to get a little more on the interesting side with his first speech on television and if you've watched the movie I presume you have if your here the first speech is very persuasive, and I just went damn, but after that went that was very good and decided to rethink it while going for a little walk and I'm glad I did, because I realized I was moved and agreed with that speech and by the time I had finished my walk I realize how in 5 minutes not even this man had persuaded hundreds of people, and that shocked me a little, even scared me.
    With this first paragraph I want to talk a little more about the end of the movie now we've seen how not even a clip of 5 minutes persuaded hundreds if not thousands of people, now if you watched not just the last ten minutes but the credits and after credits too you'll probably remember Mr. Adolf Hitler saying I can work with this, now I won't say what the complete ending is but there's a single bit of that movie where they show not cut and made scenes but ones of actual modern day Neo-Nazis or people who at least somewhat agree with them, a long with this I realized that there is a line between modern day Europe and 1930's Europe people are annoyed and protesting and rioting against the government and there is a line between these two Europe's, it is not a nice silver line that is easy to see, nor is it a blurred line, rather you can not see this line until you compare both Europe's and only then do you see that line but it is also only then that you realize the Modern Day Europe has crossed that line.
    This is why the saying; "History repeats itself like a ripple" Makes sense, it just doesn't make sense until you hear Hitler say, "I can work with this" and compare the two Europe's and realize there is not much difference.
    Now please don't hate on me I'm not a Nazi or anything but I know someones gonna hate on me I just simply wanted to add my opinion.

      i watched this just a few hours ago as well, and i actually feel the same. look, i'm an asian (taiwanese) girl, i hate fascism, i'm definitely not anything even remotely close to a nazi. but i feel the same as you do. during his speech in the movie, even i was touched. and throughout the film i was kind of drawn to his character and even was sort of rooting for him in the beginning. like the youtuber said, the actor really did a good job playing the part and *humanizing* a person who is always referred to as a monster. even knowing all the horrific things he has done, we as humans can still be manipulated. how can we be like this anyway? how can we know history and yet when history repeats, we don't have the ability to stop it? sometimes it feels like this man has a magical power and the ability to really get inside your head and make you see what he sees. it is very scary. i'm just glad that our modern day fascist dictators (xi, putin, kim) don't have even a fraction of the power hitler had.

    I absolutely loved the book. it had so many funny parts and sentences, I couldn't read it on the bus, because I was laughing so badly. but also, the book was incredibly scary. terrifying.
    and now, watching some scenes from the movie brings that same amount of fear back. I almost chose history - WWII/propaganda as my subject at the university. I probably watched every single documentary and read a ton of books about the dictatures, propaganda etc.
    the first problem is, you get to like this character, who Timur has created. and then, the fact scares you. this Hitler, in the book/movie isn't the yelling monster that everyone warns you about, or the person you see in documentaries. and your brain just becomes confused entirely. you need to sit down and clear things in mind, and I actually do recommend it after watching either this movie, or The Downfall, which is another masterpiece.
    the way Hitler's character is built up in the story, is the scariest. what he says and the way he says it, is truly worrying. people could say "ah yeah yet another Hitler parody" but damn, this was something else. the only thing, which pulls me out of this agonization, is that the actor has brown eyes instead of the iconic blue eyes (if I can say that..) and there's many closeups about H. so basically, my brain kept telling me it's just an actor...

    I believe the film starts out as a comedy, then ends up as a drama. Because it's funny until it isn't. I mean think of all the people laughing at Trump, now he's president of the United States. And I would also like to mention how this story is really just a retelling of Hitler's rise to power, like instead of him being sent to prison, and writing his book. He is practically kicked out of society for his actions. Then he writes his book. All he has to do is donate to a dog charity, and everybody forgets what he did.

    • @justnoah2073
      @justnoah2073 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Brian You will see there will be things that make you the same to. If we traced your lineage back far enough we would find out earliest ancestors came from Africa. Actually all of us come from one singular celled organism billions of years ago. I think if you saw a man in a situation like that you might surprisingly find yourself feeling compassion. And would take a few minutes out of your day to call that ambulance, you say you wouldn't, but he's probably liked by someone in your ethnicity to. Would you be hurting that person by taking or not saving someone they loved?

    • @justnoah2073
      @justnoah2073 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Brian I get it's what you believe in and dislike. Humans evolved and spread around the globe, only when they found each other again they decided to hate each other. Those who hated the most, made sure the hatred outlived them. I hope you would let go of it. Because most species other than Polar/Grizzly bears can't make viable offspring with other species. I say you start of each new day with something that doesn't relate to hate or different ethnicities. Just at the very least start of your day that doesn't start with hate. It'll make you feel better I promise.

    It's a bit on the nose but ngl it made me tear up a bit when the grandma recognizes Hitler. I think the film suffers from the liberal lens of assuming ideas alone illuminate people's thoughts or change their minds when fascism is a feature of our capitalist society, something Hitler paved the road for because of our colonial past 400 years prior.

    Just saw this movie. it’s scary how a modern day hitler can be easily implemented with the amount influence one person can have. If a strong influencer came up with manipulative words and unusual views with hidden wordplay one could say that a modern day hitler could be as easy as influence. And with the media we have today how easily an ideal can be broadcasted and shared...I don’t doubt it
