- SHOOTING A TELEVISION SERIES day in and day out, sometimes 14 hours or more at a time, can be grueling work. It's even more intense when you are playing a character like DR. RODNEY McKAY, who carries along the plot with tons of complex dialogue you have to memorize.
What makes it even tougher? How about we hang you upside down for this next scene?
In this conversation with "Dial the Gate" actor David Hewlett discusses some of his hardest days of filming on STARGATE ATLANTIS. That includes that scene in "Runner," the second-season episode that introduced Jason Momoa as Ronon Dex, in which McKay is caught in a trap and dangled upside down.

David really played McKay so well, I really hope we get to see more of McKay in the future!
One of the best reasons to watch Stargate Atlantis is the banter between Mackay and Sheppard, also Jason M's character. The rest of the cast is also brilliant, but MacKay was the most humorous to watch at times. Hope he guest stars in future Stargate shows if Amazon knows what is best for their series (in tune with its fan base) and keeping long time fans with a continuation of stories.
Hanging upside down AFTER lunch I imagine as worse.
DH is the reason I became a SG fan. He is absolutely brilliant! I wouldn't have minded if he had 80 % of the dialog. Thanx for the channel and content!

He made such an impression on me in 48 Hours and I was hoping for his return, so I was THRILLED when McKay was part of Atlantis! Such a gem!

Seeing David Hewlett's face makes me think "I miss McKay"
The food conversation was funny. I love food too, but it's lack of sleep that does me in. I can even go days without eating before it effects me mentally; however, wake me up after only two hours of sleep and I'll be grumpy.
Talking about McKay and Mrs Miller and pushing yourself as an actor reminded me of when David Tennant played the Doctor pretending to be another character, and the showrunner (RTD) says it's like food for an actor "Here you go, eat that."
Snickers. You're not you when you're hungry.
OMG Rodney was my instant fav in that show. He would get some crazy so fast and so fussy and cranky but very lovable and funny and sweet. Rodney and Shep had the best and sweetest friendship. David was soooo much fun to watch.
Damn, McKay was one of my favourite characters.

He did a great job at impersonatng the role of McKay.
I absolutely loved when he showed up, and made 3 of them on SEE, i don't look into shows much, i want to be surprised by anything, so i didn't know the other 2 were going to be in it ..

Hahaha “full on McKay” lol I’ll have to remember that one
another "double role" episode he did well was the episode Duet. I remember thinking he looks a bit tortured at the circumstance toward the end, which might have been some realism creeping in
that was completely different though, he was playing two people in one body
well yeah, and it was shot differently too, but it was still multiple roles in one day of filming

My favorite episode was Sateda, it helped the series keep going in my opinion.
This reminds of Doctor Who the interview where Kate O'Mara discuss the scene where she had to be upside down.
