- Title: Using AI to predict disease risks.
Abstract: Decision-making in healthcare relies on the ability to understand patients’ past and current health state to predict, and ultimately change, their future course. Artificial intelligence (AI) methods promise to aid this task by learning patterns of disease progression from large corpora of health records to predict detailed outcomes for an individual. However, the potential of AI has not yet been fully investigated at scale yet.
Biography: Moritz Gerstung did his undergraduate work in physics at the University of Freiburg, Germany. In 2012, he earned his PhD in computational biology at the ETH Zurich. He then became a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in Hinxton, UK, where he analysed cancer genome evolution. Since 2015, he has been a Research Group Leader at the European Bioinformatics Institute EMBL-EBI in Hinxton, UK, working on Cancer Data Science. In 2021, he became the Division Head for Artificial Intelligence and Cancer Evolution at the German Cancer Research Centre DKFZ and professor at the University of Heidelberg, Germany. His laboratory uses machine learning to understand the growth and development of tumours.
