I’m watching this on Netflix right now. This is one of the most horrible heartbreaking stories I have ever heard. Waiting for trial for 3 years over a damn backpack that he didn’t steal. RIP Kalief and my condolences to your family and friends. Watching your story deeply effected me.
Cynthia Ann They set bail and then denied bail and held him because he was on a 5 year felony probation for stealing a truck. I don't know yet if Probation filed a violation. I just watched Episode 1.
Militant Wakanda I was watching the same series on Netflix when I made this comment. In one of the episodes they go into the “process” that kept him there for that long. Keep watching it’s a good documentary series.
I just binged watched the documentary. I'm still thinking about it what a impact it had on me. There's no words to explain what happened to this young boy. How ironic the illegal immigrant who says he robbed him gets to go home flees back to Mexico. . Rip Kaleif and his mother. What a scumbag father though sad.
Pee Aye yeah same here! Poor guy was ruined from all the shit he went through in there...he felt completely alone and lost when he finally got out...RIP buddy, No more pain! Say hello to heaven! 😇
Don't know if I can watch this.I went through the same experience. In 1992, I was arrested in Brooklyn and charged w robbing a lady and her 5 yr old daughter at gunpoint. Was coming from hanging out and entering the subway No gun, different clothes, no$$, I'll never forget what one of the ladies who worked at the precint told me. I was BEGGING to be heard, telling her I was innocent, She said "Baby it happens all the time"
TY for the sentiment, bro..I actually feel blessed after watching this.I think that around that time NYPD was doingthis on a wide scale. ...maybe for economic reasons, data collecting or something. on my mother's LIFE, I asked for a lie detector test and was told that I failed it. So, I am thinking that there was something going on behind the scenes regading young blk men b/c the circumstances are quite similar to his- except I didnt have bail cuz I had no priors.
I’ve never had so much admiration for another human that I have never met. To have that level of conviction is incredibly rare and inspiring. His story is tragic, and at times infuriating, but Kelief will be immortal for the light that he shed on a horrible system.
This is one of the saddest stories I've ever heard. I literally cried and prayed uncontrollably throughout the entire show. He was never the same after spending 3 yrs in that hell hole for something he didn't do. They literally broke him and drove him to commit suicide. I don't need to know exactly who he was before prison to see the damaged they've left on him. His eyes, his words, his demeanor tells me everything. He tried to live a normal life when he got home but those demons followed him. It tore my heart to pieces. We have his testimony and video of some of the things he went through but I can't even imagine how he felt mentally. His eyes speak to me on a spiritual level. They murdered that boy
Took the words out my mouth... I still think of Kalief regularly. It's ultimately beyond comprehension just how unjust and cruel what they did to him really is, and how they _still_ do people daily!
He punched walls...he killed himself...after all he went through...he never lashed out at the police or courts with violence...this kid is amazing...rest his soul...but blood should be shed for him.
We need to stop the violence and come together to right the injustices in this country as well as the world. No one group can do it alone, it will take a nationwide effort.
***** He was _falsely_ accused of stealing someone's backpack, he later got arrested, then wanted to proclaim his innocence. That didn't work and he served brutal beatings and whatnot at Rikers for 3 years. In between he tried to commit suicide by at least 10 times. It never went to trial and he was released shortly. However he had trouble adjusting to his life post-Rikers and he committed suicide by hanging himself in his bedroom shortly after he turned 22. Watch his appearances on _The View_ (with Rosie O'Donnell), _HuffPost Live_ (with Marc Lamont Hill) and _Nightline_. Then watch Diane Sawyer's look at Rikers Prison from the inside. All on here. And his mom passed away after she was seen at a press conference with Jay Z (who produces this special) and Harvey Weinstein. She died of a broken heart a few weeks after they had the conference.
why should he admit to a crime he hasn't commited and get a criminal record. You do know people with a criminal record find it hard to get work, most countries dont even allow you to visit if you have a criminal record and it doesn't matter what crime you commited as long as you have that marker. Why should he have to suffer that indignity?
I didn't read after he asked what happened. I read the first comment under this video and it said RIP to Kalief and his mother, so the spoiler was telling everyone that they are deceased!!!

Just finished watching this docuseries on Netflix. The system singlehandedly destroyed not only Kalief, but his mother and the rest of his family. One of the most heartbreaking documentaries I've ever watched. It just goes to show you that there are people out there who are innately evil, and they don't have an ounce of humanity in them. From the corrections officers, to the DA's, to the judges, all these people are pure evil. And they were okay with literally taking two lives in the process. By all means necessary. First causing Kalief to suicide, and subsequently contributing to the demise of his mother. Because at the very core of all that happened, the system did not see Kalief as human to begin with. This is America!
That boy never got out of prison. There were so many people of all colors that could have helped Kalief and didn't. I hope you can find the peace in death you were never given the chance to have in life. RIP Kalief.
One of the saddest stories ever. Crazy is, I didn’t know the back story as I was watching this. So when they said he passed, my heart dropped. No justice, no peace.

I think instead of pushing for the Documentary, Jay-Z could have bought them a house and take Kalief out of that neighbourhood. His mental health after the cruelty of being 16yrs old in prison with Adult males & being beaten was too much.

Respect the men and women blue lmao. My brothers friend is an officer and i remember him telling me there are very few good people on the force and the good ones tend not to last long. They join the force with this idea in their heads that they are becoming part of something big to protect and serve only to discover that they're just joining a gang with badges and no criminal records.
Absolutely heartbreaking. Kalief was a great man and an inspiration. I'm not sure how these people in our "justice system" that are responsible for this even sleep at night with all of the blood on their hands. Rest in paradise my brother.
Even if he had stolen that backpack, which he hadn’t, this punishment would be totally disproportionate...it’s truly outrageous...and on top of that the horrible treatment in prison...poor poor boy😔😢...so very sad💔
Over 90% of state and federal criminal cases are adjudicated by plea bargaining and yet this young man still had to wait 3 years to have his case heard, our criminal-justice system seems a lot more criminal than just to me.
Just watched. It was painful and tearful to see this. I unfortunately live in a geographic area where nobody thinks twice about profiling being wrong. I used to see it all the time when I delivered to the more impoverished areas of town. It sickens me that we've continued to figure out ways to codify and enforce racism and classism long after it became "illegal." To say we need change doesn't quite measure up to the obstacles to that change. God bless this and any family who has lost a child into or because of a broken system.
Just finished watching this series on Netflix. Kalief Browder was indeed an ACTIVIST! He stood for what is right. Unfortunately, he took his own life feeling he was cursed. I cried when I found out he committed suicide. The system needs to be change. RIP Kalief, you will be remembered!
This is such an amazing story and such a well done show. It's riveting and maddening and enthralling and makes you want to scream. I've only finished the third episode but I am captivated. I watch a lot of documentaries about what's wrong with our criminal justice system but this story takes it to a whole new level.
I don't know what's the point, nothing is changing people are suffering , at least I know kalief's story but what about the people I don't know.........I have given up , there is no hope........
People keep voting, supporting or cosigning for bad people and their bs, women even search for the most worst type of men they can find then complain bout an ass kicking, same thing goes for the general population.
Syed Abdul Wasay I'm sorry you feel that way man. To be honest,. I feel the same way too sometimes. Then I realized you shouldn't expect anything from the government or the justice system. Instead, we got to look out for each other. Protecting our friends, family, neighbors. All this racial profiling is messed up. Injustice comes for us all, that's why we need to be there for each other, when all else fails. there are people out there that have your back. don't forget that.
There is hope my friend i lost it too but we can find it again focus on the good things never lose hope coming from someone who lost every bit of hope u will find it again if you want to

His story on Netflix really touched me. Shame on the system for destroying this beautiful soul. They put so much unnecessary stress on Kalief, his mother an siblings. The justice system is corrupt an I pray to God everyone gets their justice karma for what they done to him.
When I was watching part 4 of #WhenTheySeeUs he was the first person I thought about. The horrors he went though is unimaginable. This was state sanctioned torture and murder.
Everyone involved in this case the judges, the DA, The City, the correctional officers, the fellow inmates, the police officers, everyone of them has played a role in his death. They drove him to that. I'd like to know how they sleep at night.
Man this system is so fucking broken. How could this happen. How could we start having for profit prisions that just toss people in solitary because we don't want to deal with them. How many other kids has this happened to????? FUCK!
I just watched the Netflix series and am lost for words. It's beyond tragic. Kalief was such a beautiful human being, inside and out. That was very clear. It's absolutley heartbreaking to watch. Also, the strong psychotic medication he was given can cause dependency and, importantly, is known by psychiatrists to alter individuals' personalities. It's also known to increase paranoia and anxiety. These should not be given to people with PTSD, which Kalief was clearly suffering from, or those with suicidal ideation. Then, after being shot, he was given medication that more than probably made it much worse. Rest in peace dear Kalief and Venida Browder ~ two beautiful souls . Your pain and suffering is over, but it will never be forgotten. The messed up system in the U.S. needs a complete overhaul, and those so-called "correction" officers should be incarcerated!!! There's more than enough evidence!!! No resources? The U.S. has just handed over billions of dollars to "Israel" to help murder more innocent children. It's the axis of evil.
Khalief was a kid with a pure heart, he was going to be someone in society. Just looking at him and his demeanor I see innocence , just wanna make one cry. What's happening in America is master slave tactics sprinkled with black people's self hate, all the black people who contributed in making his life miserable did so because of self hate. It's sad these type of things still go on in America. I thought Jay-Z would help in a visible way like getting him out of the neighborhood, also Rosie, they could have used thier start/celebrity power to effect change in his life, especially the environment factor. From Africa with love
This innocent black man went through it, then at the end of it all committed suicide. My heart truly breaks for him and his family. The demons of what happened to him were eating him up inside.
I cannot stop thinking about Kalief, I literally cried so much because of this documentary. It took me 3 weeks to finish as it was so difficult to watch him go through all of this. He seemed like a really sweet guy and I hope RIP 😔😭
I'm sure your aware by now, but his mum died shortly after he did and he was estranged from his money hungry foster father who tried selling the family home his mum had been in for 31 years. (for some reason it wasn't showing me replies to your post)
I will never forget this young man I cried searching for this after already watching it twice before I cried because every site was charging to watch his story but yet and still his family has yet to be compensated his mother loss not just her son but her home and nobody helped her instead they used it for publicity to make themselves look better shit makes me sick
Watched that series in a row. The biggest problems are money (& corruption) and rassism. Man, what I'm watching a few weeks before my first trip to the USA 😱
So sad this is just heartbreaking imagine how many others it could be me or you just be careful out there. Once you get arrested your life in their hands a bunch of strangers some just their for the paychecks the system going to eat you up. If someone out there makes you upset swallow your pride walk away don’t let the cops or system do something like this to you especially if you got kids that depend on you. RIP happy Netflix made this or no one would no about you. Look at all the people hurting for you and your family.
Kalief was on a 5 year felony probation for stealing a truck, so thats why the court set but denied the $3000 bail (bondman asked for $900) and made him sit in there. I don't know yet if Probation officially filed a violation for the arrest or even if they could do so. I just saw Episode 1. But the damage to him was really from the jail itself. The inmates beating him. The guards beating him. The solitary confinement for 14 months straight.
I haven't watched the documentary but the article in the New Yorker was devastating to read. I know the court systems are backed up in Canada but what's happening in the US is horrible. Black people falsely accused of crimes, thrown into prison and forced to wait for years for a court date for a minor offence? This is torture.

This documentary made me hate life after
This is such an amazing story and such a well done show.
Syed Abdul Wasay I'm sorry to hear you've given up hope on us. I'll do my best to set an example of righteousness for the world.
Syed Abdul Wasay ...I know huh.. Its almost as if it was designed to be this way,
to feel this way... its 'successful' 😨
There is hope my friend i lost it too but we can find it again focus on the good things never lose hope coming from someone who lost every bit of hope u will find it again if you want to
Kalief Browder has been through a lot in light like being beaten by prisoners and stuff like that RIP kalief I will always have respect for you
Just finished watching it and honestly it’s hurts 😞

Real talk?
I’m literally scared to watch this, I don’t think my heart can handle it😢😢
Makes me want to hold my brothers tight and make sure they are never in this situation. I pray to God this doesn't happen ever again.
Watch on netflix ‘ when they see us’
Faxx
This happens EVERYDAY. EVERYDAY.
His story on Netflix really touched me. Shame on the system for destroying this beautiful soul. They put so much unnecessary stress on Kalief, his mother an siblings. The justice system is corrupt an I pray to God everyone gets their justice karma for what they done to him.
They destroy all of us who have no support.
Amen.
Truly the saddest documentary and story I’ve ever seen 😞 RIP Kalief 🙏🏽
Man this system is so fucking broken. How could this happen. How could we start having for profit prisions that just toss people in solitary because we don't want to deal with them. How many other kids has this happened to????? FUCK!
it was never right
And now with Jeff Sessions as Attorney General I suppose the system is only going to get worse and worse for people of color.
I am a changed, and a better person, because of this documentary.
He took his life, even when they say you're free, you're not 🤧Saddest thing I've ever seen.
This shit is just disgusting and heart breaking.
R.I.P Kalief & his mother
Did they ever AIR his story on Television? I never seen it yet
It’s online.. for free
Rest In Peace & Paradise Kalief Browder & Mama Browder & God Bless & Jesus Bless The Browder Family & You All #BlackLivesMatter
There was no "back" pack, the police and judges knew that.
This is so sad I don't think I can watch :( I'm happy he is a way better place now 🙏🏾
The saddest bit is where the lawyer says he felt kaliff was tormented!!!
I have to tell his brother Akeem about this! We are still fighting for you Kalief!
I watched the documentary and I am truly disturbed. #RIPKalief
This makes me realize that even if the Central Park Five told the truth and said they were innocent, they still would’ve reached the same fate.
I cannot stop thinking about Kalief, I literally cried so much because of this documentary. It took me 3 weeks to finish as it was so difficult to watch him go through all of this. He seemed like a really sweet guy and I hope RIP 😔😭
This series looks amazing! Sad but amazing! This story needs to be told!
Such a sad and harrowing story R.I.P. Kalief
Anyone know how I can watch this!!! I missed when it aired. I have tried numerous ways and itnseems nearly impossible.....
RIP Kalief 2015, hopefully your parents get paid.
I'm sure your aware by now, but his mum died shortly after he did and he was estranged from his money hungry foster father who tried selling the family home his mum had been in for 31 years. (for some reason it wasn't showing me replies to your post)
I am shocked about your story. RiP Kalief. Hugs and deep respect from Italy.
This documentary has never made me so angry , can’t even describe it , it’s like I feel everything he went through
Here after watching "when they see us "
Justice For Kalief

WHERE CAN I WATCH THIS IN FULL. PLEASE.. ANYONE!??
Christoffer Andersson the network spike
thanx Hanna!
I will never forget this young man I cried searching for this after already watching it twice before I cried because every site was charging to watch his story but yet and still his family has yet to be compensated his mother loss not just her son but her home and nobody helped her instead they used it for publicity to make themselves look better shit makes me sick
this reminds me of the hurricane movie by Denzel Washington....R.i.p. Kalief😢
Rest in Power I'm sorry we couldn't help you
Kalief was on a 5 year felony probation for stealing a truck, so thats why the court set but denied the $3000 bail (bondman asked for $900) and made him sit in there. I don't know yet if Probation officially filed a violation for the arrest or even if they could do so. I just saw Episode 1. But the damage to him was really from the jail itself. The inmates beating him. The guards beating him. The solitary confinement for 14 months straight.
You also forgot the damage to him was also the false backpack accusation. Even the victim said, Kalief didnt stole his back back.
I haven't watched the documentary but the article in the New Yorker was devastating to read. I know the court systems are backed up in Canada but what's happening in the US is horrible. Black people falsely accused of crimes, thrown into prison and forced to wait for years for a court date for a minor offence? This is torture.
Good god! what a tragic story.
