You brought back a love of something very close to my heart...Chess! I discovered this channel a few days ago just by pure chance of youtube’s algorithms, and though it has been years since ive played, I put in hours everyday now and I love every second. I learned chess as a kid from my father, and I thought I was pretty badass taking out a lot of my seniors at the time, though I knew nothing of theory, or strategy, only how to move the pieces. One day though, I was sitting on a blanket in a field at a music festival playing chess against myself, when a 30 something year old man asked if he could join me for a game. I eagerly accepted, excited to show off my skill. The man defeated me in less than 10 moves. Turns out he was a decorated Grand Master, and took the time to give me my first true educated introduction into the magnificence that is chess. After that I continued onward, but became distracted with life as well as overwhelmed with the vast complexity that accompanied the game I loved so dearly.
Your channel has sparked a fire in me once again, and thank you so much for that. Im a barely adequate player, but im working at it, running the “tacticts” challenges on the Chess.com phone app for hours on end, and playing anyone I can. Hopefully I can run into that guy who taught me at that festival and give him a run for his money 🤙

Honestly one of the most amazing speakers on TH-cam. When he talks about some random photo he makes it seem like the most interesting thing in the world. First I see the photo and don't really notice anything interesting in it but he will make even a little thing super exciting to look at.

9:49 -- In case you're wondering why Gelfand does not seize the insufficiently defended g-pawn, it's because here's what would happen: If Bxg3, then Na5 (threatening the queen, which must keep an eye on the adventurous bishop), Qe5, Bd4 (X-raying the knight through the queen), any queen move, ...and then Keymer either leisurely captures the bishop if it's undefended, or trades one piece for two via Bxf6, Qxf6, Kxg3.
9:59 -- Keymer's king move is too timid here. Qa6, otoh, forcefully wins material: Qxa6 (anything else loses more material), Nxa6, b3, Nc5, and both of Black's remaining queen-side pawns are threatened and soon to fall, leaving White up two pawns.
12:42 -- Blundering aside, Black should be able to hold this: Kg8 is followed by Rd6, Qe7, Bc5, Qb7, Bd4, and there's little else to do as the rating drops under +1. (White enabling Black to trade his lackluster knight for three of White's king-side pawns is why Qxh3 is the engine's recommendation at 12:50 )
14:28 -- A seemingly sleepy king move is also in winning for White: Kg3, fxe4, g5+, Kxg5, f4+, Kh6, Ne3, Kh5, Ng4, Qb3+, Be3 (this bishop must guard g1 from the black queen, i.e., Bc3 is a blunder as it permits Qb6, winning the rook as both the rook and the g1 checkmating square are undefended), and now White's knight must move or be lost, after which...Rh8 (the same move Vincent played instead of Kg3, as apparently a short-cut).
16:23 -- Let's explore what happens if fxg4 rather than fxe4 (the played move): g5, Ra8, Ne5, Rxa7, Nd3, Kg3, Qd6+, f4, Nxf4, Bg7+, Kg6, Ne7+, Kxg7, Nf5+ (royal forking, and after taking the queen, White is up a rook).

I have been trying to follow Vincents games for some time, but they are not published so often.
I find his style very natural and creative, and extremely instructive, because his ideas are so familiar to me in my play. Of course Vincent takes it to a whole higher level. Which is why he is an IM (soon to be GM I think) and I am not.
I hope he has a great future in the game.

I havent played chess in years. Started watching your videos today, love em. I actually paused and called the rook, but to G8 and with no regard to the knight counter or any counter for that matter. lol
Hey agad, I put this particular position at 13:02 into my engine and let it calculate for a few minutes (since depth 21 is actually NOTHING), if you seriously want to refer to an engine estimation you should calculate at least up to depth 30 or even more. So after 244 seconds of calculation my engine (Stockfish 9) hit depth 37 and said white is winning with an evaluation of roughly 1.6. Best moves are either Qc4, Qe7 or a6. After playing Nd7 the engine immediately jumps up to +4 for white which can be considered to be a blunder. So if you're refering to engine recommendations in future please make sure to calculate (a lot) further than depth 21.
Totally correct. It's interesting though that Leela Chess is preferring Nd7 above the other moves even after a long calculation time...

SF9 depth 37 is fine for beginners and LEELA is good for those of us who are slightly mentally retarded, but if you want a serious and genuine analysis of the position there's only one place to go: the java based CPUCHESS on a 5 second ponder. It also gives Nd7 as a blunder and also recommends Qe2 or Qc4. So, you don't need to turn SF up to 11 nor wait 244 secs to find the best move in such a position. Though, please note: if you do abandon SF for CPUCHESS (as you no doubt will) you must always bear in mind that CPUC has no understanding of either a King attack nor of the danger of passed pawns. X

first of all, what a fantastic video once more! It's insanely catchy to watch this stuff... but for some moves, its hard for me to understand them since I am not a chess player myself and the last time I actively played for more than once a year was 12 years ago when I was 6y.o. I do see some moves and definitely, more then I expected!
Still, I would love to see some videos of you where you explain some basics of chess for those of us who are not quite as good as most of your viewers... I would understand that this kinda video would take way too long and only effects a smaller part of your community but I still wanted to throw the idea out there, anyway thanks for the video!

Man, Blacks pieces and strategy looked great. But it was like everytime Vincent moved his knight it solved everything.

9:47 Can´t help myself, but what about bishop takes pawn on g3? Then knight h5, and according to reaction knight f4 or bishop h2 + queen g3 etc. Also black rook can capture knight on c5 any time when white bishop is busy defending / out and then proceed to first line. Any flaws I don´t see? Thanks.

I tried this agaisnt stockfish on lichess and after rook to H8 stockfish played pawn captures on G4. I couldn't find a way to possibly overcome this. If this was played what would have been the correct counterplay to win?

Hi I’m new to chess but I was wondering at 13:20 as Boris moves his knight towards the rook, isn’t it possible for Vincent to win in the next two turns. Could he move his bishop between all three pawns in the triangle, leaving the king exposed because of he were to move he’d be capture by the pawn and if he doesn’t, the bishop will capture.

Wouldn't pushing G4 pawn be a good move at 14:19 ? The king will go to H5 or be forced into H5. Then a fork to the queen and the king with the night moving to E4. Knight tales queen and we have a huge piece advantage too. Is there anything I've missed or is that ok?

the stockfish thing could be an example of the horizon effect, where as engines only look a certain number of moves ahead it can't find a win in those 21 moves, but when you look 22 moves ahead it can find a win.

I used to play a mathmatician who was also a chess player. We would get into furious battles on the board, sometimes playing a hard-fought game that would last 3-4 hours. I probably fried a lot of my brain cells playing that man.
Ag, once the game reaches a position that has not been seen before, it doesn’t mean that it is out of the player’s preparation as you state in the video. It could still be within preparation. Better way to say it is that it’s not been seen in over the board tournament play. Even that may not be true in that it may have been reached in a game that wasn’t reported or stored. Great video as always.

So at 12:30 why would you want to move the king instead of capturing the rook if he takes a pawn? (Very new to chess)
