  • In this episode of Minutes With, we sat down with Harry Potter stunt performer and remarkable individual, David Holmes. David opens up on his close friendship with Daniel Radcliffe, the magic of being the first person ever to play Quidditch and his fond memories of the Harry Potter sets. David discusses the on-set accident that left him paralysed, speaks on societal attitudes towards those with disabilities and how people can be a force for change in their own lives.
David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived is out now on Sky Documentaries and streaming service NOW.

This idea of "insurability" is so strange. The Potter films could not have been made without a face, but they also required a body. It seems to me that without you and your kind, there can be no blockbuster. I hope they took good care of you. If the stars don't need to worry about money anymore, you should never have to worry about money again. This is a story about what we value, how much we value it, and why we value it.

@@Dionysos640 I think most people know the Oscars are about as meaningful with regards to filmmaking as the Emmys are or the golden globes are.
Go watch some of the best character actors, they openly tell you the toughest acting are the people doing bit parts who come in for the day and have umpteen script changes and character changes and are still expected to perform for very little money.
In a film they literally shoot three second bits and splice them together. As the joke goes, even WRITERS get no respect in Hollywood, only the good looking people in fancy clothes.

The problem is that it would be a very blurry category.
Like, would it be an award for "Best Stunt" or "Best Stunt Double"? Because if it is the former you'd have to include actors who perform their own stunts. This category may also fall into the trap of rewarding people solely for putting themselves/being put in dangerous situations.
It's kind of the same reason why Guinness World Records stopped giving out world records for inherently dangerous things like obesity or fasting, because they don't want to create a competitive environment where the competition is how much mortal risk you can put yourself in.

It seems to me like you’re just jealous of the opportunities he’s been given, the same opportunities he wouldn’t have got if he let his tragedy define him. “These scars that we have, we aren’t meant to go back and fix them; and there’s nothing broken within you that needs fixing. That said, he is lucky in his misfortune because, by his own admission, he's helped and loved by so many people. Would you praise those with a 'victim mentality' or even feel sorry for them? I bet you wouldn't. On the contrary, you'd prolly shit on them. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. Some people receive no love (or even positive attention) from the moment they are born. @user-pn5mn6mv3c It's also easy for someone in his position to be depressed and angry because he lost a job he loved even with money and family. I've seen it happen a lot more than see someone be positive and happy.
You sound like you are jealous. Be happy you have the ability to go through life on two legs because it could change in the blink of an eye- like it did for him. Be happy in whatever life has given you. No one is guaranteed money, family, and parties. He embraces life and shows happiness in his character. You should too. Not spreading unhappiness and jealousy.

Love how he says 'if you are on fire, and you are waiting for someone to put you out, you need to know they will be there'. To most people saying that, it would be some kind of figure of speech, but to him its, no when i am literally on fire 😂. What an amazing guy, wish him all the best!

David is frickin brilliant. I love how he gets down to business in earnest but always with a smile. Especially with the "how can we be better as a society to people with disabilities?" Disability is individual and personal, being disabled is how society treats you, where it thinks you should be able to go and what it thinks you should be able to do and contribute. We need to stop disabling people with disabilities as a global community.
Also don't shy away from any opportunity to feel is a spectacular answer.

I like that he says people should take from his story what they will. What I take from it is an appreciation for being able to move my body while I can, whether it's working out or just completing life tasks and chores. It's something we so often take for granted until we lose that ability. Also what a lovely person he is,❤ and the fact that he didn't want to do the documentary at first because he didn't want to "tarnish" the HP movies 😢

When you watch this guy in the documentary fighting the agonising pain of his injuries at home in his bedroom and anxiously biting his nails, (which is utterly heart breaking and destroyed me)... to then hear him talk about his future and finding that light in everyday and embracing all feelings, good and bad as a human... is so powerful and one of most inspirational things I've seen on YT! I applaud and thank you you David for sharing your story! p.s You're most definitely one of the toughest "Mother-F*%#ER's" around mate!
