Glazer's The Zone of Interest really is a haunting movie. The day to day genocidal bureaucracy and support really is that banal - for most people who support it, they simply don't think of the people being murdered and when they do it's to steal their belongings or mock them. I think this really is what life is like for most Israelis, most of the time. They simply don't think of Palestinians unless they're administering to them by applying apartheid, blocking them from their rights, robbing them, attacking them ,killing them. Or when the sirens go off because of yet another rocket that almost never hurts anyone, launched from the concentration camp.
Matt, Nora, I swear I love you. Thank you so much. You are saving lives, including mine. I might have probably ended my life or completely lost my mind by November if not for your voices and others proving there is still goodness and sanity in this world. Your friend & fan, Megan in Sacramento
Dear Megan, We need good people in the “army” of goodness in the world. You don’t need to be a leader, a general or a hero of the good, we just need you and many, many people like you standing beside us. Your presence is more than enough! This might be a silly cliche, but as a student of history, many movements that succeeded started with a tiny group of people coming together. But as much as the leaders and heroes contributed to the success of those movements, so too did the countless “normal” people, like you and me, whose presence and participation were essential. We need you, we want you, we thank you!

50:32 The wild thing about this 'Ahrendt was wrong' take - quite apart from the fact that, whatever revelations might have come from those recordings, his role as the person in charge of genocidal logistics and his ideological zealotry (which he discussed EXTENSIVELY in the dock in Jerusalem) were not new information, is that Rudolf Höß and Adolf Eichmann both held the rank of Sturmbannführer, the equivalent of a major in the US army. That is the low end of middle management. Even after he's promoted to the deputy inspector role, the highest ranking person in the room with him at that meeting towards the end is just a brigadier. (Personally, I've always found it lowkey insulting that we weren't even given the dignity of having a full bird colonel in charge of the day-to-day management of our extermination). Also, yer man misspells Eichmann.
I think the biggest issue I took with the name debacle (and other names that you have since mispronounced) is that Tadhg's name is actually a sign of resistance against British imperialism. Gaelic was banned for hundreds of years within Ireland, as a form of cultural erasure (which as you have often said, is one aspect of genocide). Recognising and acknowledging that is an essential part why we're here to listen to the expertise of your guests, as we continue to learn and teach each other about imperialist violence. It might be intended as just a funny bit, but it won't translate that way to everybody. Recognition and acknowledgment is an enormously important tool we have against oppression and erasure. Introducing your guests to us, with their correct names, is a gesture that all of us can follow. Not hating and genuinely love your content. Just thought I'd share why myself and others weren't fans of it.
