  • Last week I created a poll asking where you'd all like to go for the next adventure - you all chose Florida! Specifically, we are headed to Pass-a-Grille/St. Pete's Beach!
    Located within close proximity to the entrance of Tampa Bay, the ease and accessibility of a trip to Pass-a-Grille/St.Pete's Beach make this location a favorite for many shellers on the west coast of Florida.
    Fun fact: I have been shelling here more than any other spot in Florida! On today's adventure, I'll show you all how I shell when I visit this awesome spot. If you are ready, so am I - Let's Go!

    True story… The things grandma do!
    My kids came down for a visit and we went to St. John’s pass. There wasn’t a stinking shell on the beach. Nothing like where you are. I went across the street to a wonderful shop and bought a big bag of shells and walked just ahead of them so they could find some ROFL! They were thrilled and my heart was full !

    i live about 20 minutes away from Pass a Grille and my hubby an I finally moved from the Bay/dog beach side to the Gulf rock/jetty side. We snorkled around the jetty and found my first golden olive among many others. Going back tomorrow, can't wait.

      Thanks so much for the great feedback! Pass-a-Grille is definitely worth a shelling stop, for sure. It can get competitive here, but loads of new shells wash in with every tide.
      Thanks for watching!

    We Winter at Treasure Island on Sunset Beach…which hasn’t had decent shelling in a while. So I would take the quick drive to Pass a Grille early mornings last Winter. In January the shelling was incredible, tons of Fighting conchs, small/baby horse conchs, banded tulips etc. I will say that during January I picked up and put back more live shells than I kept! Interesting fact, I came in contact with a Florida naturalist who told me NOT to throw back the live conchs and banded tulips as they came up to the beach to mate! This of course after I’d returned dozens to the gulf 😂

    • @solaceinshelling6552
      @solaceinshelling6552  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello friend! What an interesting point about live tulips and conch's - I'll definitely have to do some more research on that! In general, if you find a live shell on the beach and there is no movement at all (for a gastropod, the mollusk will either retreat back into the shell or move their foot around, and a bivalve will close up there shell), it's a very strong indication that the animal has already deceased.
      Happy shelling and thanks for watching!

      What an interesting question! There's actually 3 places that would be on my dream shelling destination bucket list - Okinawa Japan(Pacific Cones and Conch's), The Red Sea(really awesome Conch's and Murex), and Iceland(Iceland Scallops, and Iceland Moonsnails)!
      Who knows, maybe one day I'll make it to those places!

    Beautiful! Do you ever find sea glass on the gulf side of Florida? We vacation at Sanibel and I have never found any. Also I have never found a shark tooth.

    • @solaceinshelling6552
      @solaceinshelling6552  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question - I have rarely ever found sea glass on Florida's Gulf Coast... the wave action here just isn't conducive to creating smooth, frosty pieces. I will say some of the best sea glass I have EVER found was in Puerto Rico and Jamaica a few years ago.

    I’m going to pass a grille soon. Is it crowded during the summer?

    • @solaceinshelling6552
      @solaceinshelling6552  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello! I have actually never shelled at St. Pete outside of the winter and spring months. Summer is typically considered the "down season" in Florida, so it probably wouldn't be as busy as during the winter.
      With that said, this area is very accessible and a well known shelling location for locals. I would say an early morning arrival would give you the best results, but then again, shelling can often be hit or miss depending on tides, weather and...luck.
      Happy shelling, my friend!

    • @solaceinshelling6552
      @solaceinshelling6552  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi friend - great question!
      Sometimes I'll swim with my Gopro just to get underwater shots or to collect shells at the shore break. I am reluctant to full on snorkel in deeper water because most often I am alone when I make these trips - better to have a buddy if you are swimming like that. Maybe in future content!

      The shelling areas at Pass a Grille is a pretty small area - it extends from the Dog Beach(Bayside), and the ocean facing beach around by the jetty! This is where I spent most of my time!

    St. PETE Beach. Not "Pete's"! WHY do tourists say that?!? It's short for the original name, St Petersburg Beach.
