This is maybe the ONLY scene in the entire film where Travis seems like a 95% normal guy. Like, sure, he's still a little bit weird and awkward, but he plays the role of concerned older brother very convincingly. Every other interaction he's had with people throughout the film always had a hint of something darker just under the surface, but this was a surprisingly gentle and touching moment in such a tragic film.

i mean, he’s a bundle of PERSON Types, both noble & deeply flawed • this is largely the point of that kind of outlandishly over dire or mission driven protagonist where they’re still sympathetic, & without even mentioning this largely mysterious figure is SEVERELY p.t.s.d.

I watched an interview with her on here recently. She says Deniro phoned her and asked her to go into town and hang out so they would be comfortable with each other. They did that several times and she said he was a man of few words and she'd just act like a twelve year old and mess around a bit and chat with strangers etc. Deniro later made her do the scene over and over and throw in a bit of improvisation. He was a good teacher and that all produced this great scene.

In this scene, Iris refers to Travis as a scorpion rather than a scorpio, which is an intriguing moment. Scorpions are often associated with concepts such as rage, transformation, and protection, which parallels Travis' journey from a lonely veteran consumed by hatred to a calculated and lethal savior who eventually rescues Iris from her own confines. This reference to Travis as a scorpion also highlights his disconnection from conventional society, as he is portrayed as his own breed of person different from everyone else.

There's a profound beauty in Taxi Driver, with Travis's journey as he grapples with his inner demons, specifically PTSD and disassociation. Amidst a world tainted by corruption and sin, he finds solace in helping a young girl who seems lost in this dark realm. She becomes his anchor, representing purity that he's determined to shield from the harsh realities of society's decline, both for her sake and his own. Travis is acutely aware of his own descent into hopelessness, and this awareness fuels his determination to prevent her from becoming another casualty of the grim environment they inhabit. She's the only thing that makes sense in his madness.
