    Great demo! It's remarkable how similar these two are, that's pretty amazing consistency from BOSS. To my ears, the newer DS-1 seemed to have a bit more low end which worked nicely with the single coil pups but the silver screw '79 had a nice open sound as the distortion was cranked up. The DS1 one is definetely underrated.

    The older DS-1 to me sounds tighter and flatter, therefore smoother and more pleasant.
    The newer DS-1 to me sounds fuller, more aggressive on the mids, which could be good,
    but also more spikey and resonant, therefore wilder and less pleasant.
    I also like, that the older DS starts with less gain, which gives more options of distortion to choose from.
    It would have been quite interesting to me (too), how the same comparison would have sounded with the pedals "Tone" rolled down, to hear, how differently the sound is rounded in comparison of the two.

    For that difference in price and availability, there's hardly any difference that can't be worked around by just EQ-ing a little bit darker or just recording it a little off-axis.

    The funny thing is that 60’s / 70’s musicans and manufacturers were by far not such a tone nerds as we are today. They produced the pedals from various components... suppliers. No batch ... even not two pedals sounded 100% the same! The difference you hear (if you hear any) is mostly tolerance in pots! The pedals sound 95% the same. Good job Boss!

    Cool demo. What year is the modern one? My impressions: vintage DS-1 has less gain in lower gain settings, a weaker midrange, has a kind of crispy shimmering hard to define quality on the top frequencies (this I interpret as vintage mojo), and it really came to life with the gain maxed out; modern DS-1 is more consistent across the gain spectrum, seems to have a litte more bass and midrange, sounds a little more messy on higher gain. Both sound very close, it's actually pretty impressive.

    EVERYONE. The older one sounds thinner because the signal going into it is brighter due to the output buffer on the new one. If you swapped the pedals around in the chain then the new one would sound thinner. I'm sure if you tested both of them with an AB box set-up they would sound basically identical.

    I can notice that the vintage sound is a little bit weak, with less bass. Electrolic capacitors tend to dry by the time and the sound become weak until it fail. Vintage electronics gear is not a good deal due to electrolic capacitors life time.

    I would use both for different applications, but I would lean towards to old DS-1 in a band setting because it seems to be more open and articulate and I’m guessing you’d cut through a mix and be heard more. I think this would be more apparent if you dimed the level on both and put them through the same gain settings. They both rock but I like to be heard when I step on my dirt boxes. That being said I also use and love the DS-1x, I initially scoffed at it at my local shop but tried it on a whim and it blew me away, the Pete Thorn video was the final nail in the coffin, if you can pick that pedal up used and cheap - do it!

    The modern pedal has a fuller midrange and bass, the old seems a bit weaker but it has a nice shimmery top end, all depends on what you want from the DS-1, I used a friends on my amp on the drive channel with a light bit of gain and the pedal at full, makes some really nice splattery sounds.

    I hear a difference if money and bragging rights was involved, but otherwise I hear no difference

    • @bojackhorseman5367
      @bojackhorseman5367 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +gmlasam Believe it or not, things actually do change. Whether you hear it or not, there is a real difference, due to the fact that boss has changed the opamp chip at least twice since the DS-1 was originally introduced. It's not uncommon for components to get swapped and substituted over time for various reasons (usually cost-cutting), especially when something has been in production for as long as the DS-1 has been. The earlier DS-1s have less of a sterile and buzzy texture to the distortion, making them more usable at higher tone and gain settings. with the new ones, you usually have to turn the tone a lot in order to mask the "bees in a jam jar" character of the distortion, or turn the gain way down so that there's less of that buzzy sound to begin with.
      I can't hear the difference too dramatically in this video either, through my headphones or my laptop speakers, but there's also a difference between watching a video demo on youtube and actually plugging your guitar into one of these pedals and playing it...

    Most the difference can be explained by parts tolerances. No two of the same pedal will sound exactly the same because many of the parts have between a 1-20% potential for difference in either direction so one part could be 40% off the same part in another pedal.

While in the case of something like the Boss CE-2 it is true, the old and new DS-1 (i've played one example of the vintage and a few newer ones) are basically the same. Difference is unnoticeable in most situations.

    I have two DS-1s - a late 1980s MIJ, with the original circuit, and a 2017 40th anniversary model... I've owned and played through many different DS-1s in the past, though. I love the DS-1, for its gnarly, aggressive distortion and sharp, cutting voicing. You know, the thing that makes everyone gripe about how it sounds "thin"? That, in combination with the abrasive texture of the distortion, helps to give you a defined sound in a very dense mix with other instruments... But yeah, amateurs gonna amateur.
    ...I have to say, the original MIJ version is quite a lot better, unless you're just trying to copy Kurt Cobain, in which case - don't worry about it - just get whatever DS-1 you can find, crank the gain and have fun :)
    The most audible difference really is that there's this kind of un-musical scratchy, grainy static overtone in the more recent ones that isn't present in the original. You get the same aggressive distortion, but it sounds a bit more organic, without that dissonant overtone. Not having the nasty static overtone makes the pedal actually usable, in a 'lo-fi fuzz' kind of way, when you turn the tone knob up above half way. I actually have every intention of buying a bunch of used DS-1s and trying different mods to try to eliminate that static sound as best I can without changing anything else, to see how close I can get a new one to sounding like an original one.
    Other differences: original one seems to have a bit more headroom at the input stage, for whatever reason, meaning there's a more open dynamic range and response. This sort of stuff isn't a placebo effect, but a lot of it can only really be recognised when you spend some time with both versions of the pedal, playing through them yourself - you're not gonna pick up on these things if you're just gonna listen to someone else. Especially on youtube, through tiny phone/earbud/laptop speakers.

    Vintage Boss pedals require 12V AC adapter or battery to operate!! Look at the dimed LED, this happens when you plug only 9V adapter into it and it's wrong. Pedal is not running properly.

    • @bojackhorseman5367
      @bojackhorseman5367 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      when you daisy chain the power supply cables, having a vintage boss pedal connected to a standard 9V pedal that's running from the same power supply bypasses the voltage reduction circuit inside the vintage boss pedal, allowing it to function correctly with a 9V power supply. It's when you have isolated power supply outputs, or are running the pedal on its own, with no other FX, that you start needing a 12V supply.

      Definitely, there's a reason why after Cobain's first DS-1 was stolen or went missing, he procured a new one, which was version 2 and didn't like it and wouldn't use it to record In Utero. Turns out a critical IC, that was in the original, was updated in the newer version and he noticed the difference and he refused to use it. He then found out that the DS-2 had that original IC installed in it and that's why he changed models between Bleach/Nevermind, where he used an original DS-1, & In Utero where he used a DS-2. The DS-2 has a Turbo switch and when turned to setting 2 sounds like the original DS-1, but when turned to setting 1 it sounds like the new DS-1. Also why there's a $50AUD difference between the 2 pedals. The DS-2 is basically the both versions of the DS-1 with a switch to change between the slight differences in distortion. I own this pedal and only use it with the Turbo switch set to 2. The original sound is crisper.

    I hear 30 year old capacitors in the old one and new ones in the new one. I'd like to see a refresh on the vintage pedal and then redo these comparisons.

    Pot's tolerance -> not the same value for the same position. Drastic change for the Tone pot. In reality there's not much difference between Japan and Taiwan made. Early Taiwan have always get my preference. Tone pot is acting less on the first half.

    It’s close! I want to give all credits due to the vintage DS-1 but suffice to say it’d be unfair. I believe it sounds of preference as the tone seems clearer and an ever so slight degree more brilliant though barely noticeable at all if you are not in the know. The new DS-1 sounded a bit more muddy but in a digital non analog way. The format for the notes seem to ever so slightly bleed into each other a hair more sounding a fraction less of tonal quality. Still though barely noticeable. If it were a shootout and vintage wasn’t your thing for the price I’d say go with the Taiwanese DS-1. Who would know. There is too much false information out there that is deceiving for potential consumers of vintage mark pedals regarding specific parts that purportedly make a better more authentic sounding pedal. This is hogwash. Pure and simple. Hogwash. If you’re a collecter of vintage pedals however, I’m afraid you will be looking at spending more if this matters to you. Beyond this, a lot of the Taiwanese Boss pedals are just as good of quality and sound.

    people need to realize just because they don't hear a difference does not mean there is no difference . some poeple have better ears then others the vintage one has more clarity and top end the newer one is fuller sounding and has more bass and sounds a bit muffled compared to the vintage one . most of the newer ones I have heard sounded like a swarm of bees this one actually sounded pretty decent . I like the vintage one slightly more because it was clearer .

    I liked the new one until he cranked the distortion then the old one came out ahead. The new one sounds warmer at lower distortion levels but with distortion cranked it sounds less articulate.

    In the 80's: "This cheap ass japanese pedal sucks..."
    Now: "The Taiwan version is garbage, nothing like the amazing smooth vintage tone you get from the MIJ. That's why I just picked one up, beat to shit, for $250.... WITH THE BOX BRO!"
    Amazing what people who never lived through a time period will claim about the things made in that era. Also amazing what the "I sold a pedal 30 years ago because I hated it but now I tell everyone it had the greatest tone ever and could never be reproduced" crowd will claim in retrospect out of sheer nostalgia. Pro tip: never sell a pedal. Even if it sucks. Fifteen years from now some dumb kid will pay double it's value thinking there's magic inside.

      Neil Kraft the vintage ds1 can be had for next to nothing if you look around it's not like a vintage paf or an original mullard power tube . vintage pedals can be had like the ds1 for some pretty sweet prices .

  • @JIMJAMSC
    @JIMJAMSC 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Bottom line- Regardless of the pedal, if you got hold of one when the prices were appropriate for a aging electronics device but now it is quadruple its cost, your brain tells your ears it was always "special." Now if you recently paid out the nose for "enter old pedal here" your brain will protect your ego and tells your ears it was worth the money and avoid the dreaded buyers remorse.
