Town gas plants were an industrial wonder in the day. However they left behind a huge environmental disaster in their end. The US company I worked for is still cleaning up the sights they acquired during utility consolidation in the early 20h century. The one in my town they have been reclama ting for over 30 years. The most difficult waste was the coal tar left over from the retorts. The tars were flushed out of the works into unlined waste ponds. The byproducts worked their way into the ground water. The difficulty is, they separate into three phases. 1 that floats in water, 2 one that sinks in water, and the worst is the phase that stays suspended in water.
