This is one of the great benefits of todays online media. Before all this, you just have to go off of someones word but now a dude can afford to run this test and then post the results online for the world to see what the truth about the subject is.
its a weird world but a good one

holy fucking shit this is the most thorough testing I have ever seen. Project Farm would be so envious of this setup =). Every welder on earth should be watching this.

I have run a belt sander for the last 15 years of my life and I've used sandpaper for the last 30 years of my life. I figured pretty much all sandpapers the same. It wears out quick. It clogs up quick. I recently got a ceramic belt for my belt sander + the minute I touched a piece of steel to it. I realized that I was completely wrong! I will now only buy ceramic. Aluminum oxide and ceramic sandpaper are not even remotely comparable. That ceramic belt can eat through a 1-in bar of steel about as quick as an aluminum oxide belt can eat through pine. It took me 29 years to figure it out but I'm sure this translates into flap discs as well.

Many of the young engineers I see have very little fabrication experience,I hope channels like yours encourage them to get more hands on. I love the way you make the test rig to measure the critical specification of interest. Its an education seeing how your rig is designed, constructed and tested itself. Real Science. Excellent work.

I am impressed with the dedication you put into the tests and efforts to record. I don't know if you thought it would get so involved or not but just how you used your tables to make complete perfect situations to a human doing this. If you were hiring someone to do this kind of grinding on say a project and you wanted them doing the work properly, your test equipment would show the human how you require stuff done. Expensive for absolute sure but your aware of stuff like this already..... great video, a ten out of ten!

Well done Sir. Your striving for a true scientific experiment and showing the process all through the setup is so entertaining. I have watched many a TH-cam demo and comparison of tools from wood, machining, garden tools, heavy equipment, batteries, plumbing to TV's, speakers, amps, computers, phones, tablets and networking equipment. NOT ONE, not a single video, come anywhere near as unbiased or fair. And your sense of humor makes it all that more watchable. Your one of my all time favourites. Thank you.

I sure appreciate you putting so much effort into researching flap disc quality! we have dozens of dewalt grinders at my fab shop. one is mounted on 15 foot pole, with the paddle switch taped over, and it fires up as soon as it's plugged into an extension. I don't think it's a very old grinder, and it has been replaced a few times. never had one that needed a reset like that.

This is super cool and it's obviously going to give you good comparisons between discs. But when it comes to the reviews I think it's good to keep in mind that this isn't the only use-case. The angle of attack between the bar and the disk is super aggressive at 90deg, but when grinding down a weld it's much more shallow, kinda like you showed in the animation at the very beginning. And I think the hard impact of the disk hitting the edge of the bar is going to kill disks faster than normal use would. Still a good comparison between disks but not necessarily a good comparison to real life use.

Damn, now I want to know this about fibre grinding disks/pads
The ones my company buys go blunt fairly quick, they are still fine to grind most stuff, but struggle at the final mm when grinding perfectly flush to go to powdercoating.
I bought a couple of 982c cubitrons and they are great, but 6 times more expensive so no way I'm convincing the boss to buy them

It's kinda crazy that thorough and rigorous testing of consumable things such as flap discs is something that people want to watch, even if they've never used one, and probably never will.
transparency and two way communication in standards testing is something that really can and does appeal to pretty much everyone, and yet there's basically no one out there that does this commercially. I'm glad that we have Fireball Tool, and Project Farm that do this kind of testing for us.
One thing i do kinda wish was a thing, or at least an easier thing for people like the folks here at Fireball Tool and Todd over at Project Farm could do, is to be reimbursed by the various manufacturers for the equipment they've purchased. I do NOT want the companies to send the equipment, because that opens the doors to cherry picking. the reimbursement would need to be completely string free though, beyond having their product used in a video. no controls over what is said or shown about their products, and no say in how their tested or used. I just don't think most manufacturers would go for something like that, even if it would benefit them all in the long run, regardless of how they perform.

this reminds me of the Last of Us TV show. in it, one of the characters rigs up a defense system that is a set of pipes that connect to a massive natural gas source that he can turn on with a single ball valve. to actually turn the gas into flames though he also uses a bunch of angle grinders that are held in the on position but their power is all wired to a single switch, and the grinders all have bolts resting on their flap discs to throw sparks into the gas. its a pretty ingenious way to create a ring of fire around your house and it would actually work lol

Would love files and analysis data as 6 hours per disk and 31 disks is almost 5 straight weeks of 40 hours. Love the single lads input but maybe allowing a fuller understanding of the data might make your point clearer.
And huge note as well on statistical analysis… you can always make your results fit your hypothesis. It’s your peers that determine if it’s statistically significant.
