    UPDATE: I forgot to mention that the gearing changes made the speedometer spot on. It no longer reads faster than you are actually going.

      Did you notice much of a loss of torque on the rocky hill climbs out bush? (If you do any)
      Also, are the revs much lower at higher speeds?
      I noticed with the exhaust tone to be a little annoying at stock indicated 115kph. Nothing earplugs won't fix. But might give the smaller sprocket a run 👍

    Another excellently presented video Shonky. Your mods are well thought out and I agree with your top five, My addition to the family won't arrive until mid March, but I'll be in the south Island for a month on my AT. Mean time I've done the hard yards with hours of googling sourcing my planned mods. I've got the same Bark busters and Storm shields on the AT. One thing high on my list is Pivotpegz, The angle always suits your foot even getting on and off but especially standing changing gears. 'Nah'..... not going to put on a quick shifter, lol. Your vid will give a lot of 300 owners just what they want to know. I will definitely be going the Giant Loop way. Cheers and great riding.

    Great synopsis. Love the shonky step pegs, thaat is brilliant.our bikes are very similar.
    By the way the fatty golden tyre went on no worries, the 120 90 18 Dunlop 606 was very difficult to fit. I have been using them with no problems for years on my 18 rear dr but on the 300 rim it was very hard to fit it was a cooler day but I think the rear rim on the 300 must be a bit taller then normal.

    Great set up review Sean & on a reasonable budget! Couple of Q's - With the exhaust and ECU, how does the power & torque compare to an un-corked XR250? (I gather you're a similar build to me & you mentioned you've had an XR). Also, excuse my ignorance here but how does the gearing throw out the speedo? Not read off front wheel huh? Thanks, Tim.

    • @ShonkyProductions
      @ShonkyProductions  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tim, power and torque are up over a XR250. Similar small thumper feel, but smoother with more pull out of corners.
      The Speedo is driven off the gearbox on most bikes these days, so changing gearing affects Speedo accuracy. I'm my case making it exactly accurate.

    Just a clarification for USA viewers, the 550 tune is less than $150 if you ship your original ECU and my turnaround was less than 10 days both times. It certainly doesn't turn your bike into a 450 but the difference is fairly dramatic and a game changer when you are in the woods.

      @ShonkyProductions  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi Cyber Gasty, yes that is a big outlay. But, most of it are things that myself and others would add to any bike. At the end of it all, including the purchase price of the bike I have spent $12,000 (Australian dollars). What I have got is a bike that is setup perfectly for me and what I what I want... A lightweight adventure bike. That is still a lot cheaper than the purchase price of many other "adventure bikes"

    talk soon Marcio

    • @ShonkyProductions
      @ShonkyProductions  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Marcio, YES, I am still very happy with the change from Africa Twin to CRF 300 Rally. It has opened up so much more riding opportunities for me. For example, yesterday I did a 230km "dual-sport" ride where I left my home, rode 20km up the freeway and then did 150km in the bush exploring lots of side tracks including very muddy, rough and steep trails. The ride ended with about 60km of nice country roads to get home. Not once did I wish I was on the Africa Twin, and in fact, I wouldn't of done any of the exploring on the Africa Twin because of it's weight.
      Once you accept the lower power, everything else is better or easier. If you are just touring or going on gravel roads the bigger bikes are great, but as soon as the road gets wet, slippery, rough or steep you will wish you were on a lighter bike like the CRF 300 Rally. It's a shame that there are no bikes at dealers for people to test ride. I've been letting people ride my bike to help them make up their minds. So far, everyone has been very impressed with the bike.
      I hope that helps.

      @@ozbiker5311 Yes, I've watched a couple of your videos, and think that you will definitely be able to go harder and faster on the 300 Rally... AND have more fun.
      It is just so much easier to turn and stop that it encourages you to go harder and faster. As a result, you have more fun. Just as long as you are happy to give up the big bike acceleration and power. I have gone from 100hp to 20hp and am loving it. Sure I can't go as fast on the freeway (but I can still do 120kph) or do big power slides, but I can explore everywhere and have a ball chasing and overtaking the big bikes!

      @@slakk5093 I feel your pain. I put a deposit down in December 2021 and that bike still hasn't turned up. The dealer said April, but with major manufacturing and shipping delays around the world... I decided to look for one second hand.
      I put a lot of WANTED ads on forums and Facebook pages until I got a lead on a 500km old Rally. I bought it straight away.
      There are some turning up on the used market now. I hope you find one or at least get a test ride soon. I know of a couple of SA riders who have one.

      @@ShonkyProductions that's a great idea on putting out wanted posts. I should do that. Thanks

    only thing wrong is the exhaust.. its a 300cc.. it WONT sound good, you will just make more noise when you are out riding in the forest and pissing off other people... just... stop.......

      I agree. That's why I made custom baffles for my muffler. I don't like loud bikes either. Also, loud exhaust is more fatiguing on long rides.

      Heat?
      I have no issues with heat at all. Maybe with the original exhaust which has a catalytic converter in it.
