Great question. The BIG question. I just got the converter for my "new" old Lumix GS-2 (body only for less than $90) so I can use my vintage Exakta lenses to record video. When you said you put old lenses on a micro 4/3 a slow-burn lightbulb went off in my head. What a fantastic world we live in! Thanks for kicking my ass into gear and for being inspiring.

Ahh, this is the best kind of comment to get, that watching my video gets you back to work. That makes me feel good. Can’t wait to see what you do!

The GH5 is still holding its own in 2024 for sure. Nice reflections!

Thanks for the kind words, I really appreciate that. And yes, since I found this GH5 on eBay, I feel like I have two A cameras, pairing it with my S5. Thanks for coming through.

@@RockWILK I am not surprised that the GH5 can handle A camera status. I used it a lot as an A camera for interviews, docs, and narrative work.

@@harlemwoodstudios for sure. It is completely capable to do professional work without a doubt. It’s just that people always want the latest and the greatest thing, but as long as you don’t rely upon auto focus, I don’t see how the GH5 falls short in any scenario. :-)

Hi Rock,Very interesting story about the heart transplant. I wondered about that myself.
    Anyway cool story,
I'm trying to learn the art of storytelling. I started making content in 2020, i have an S5 and a gh5 and i never invested in any lights because i thought all my work would be outside. I knew no better, lack of experience, But now i want to start to share my work and I'm setting up in my house. After a lot of research, based on my budget and requirements I ordered my first key light yesterday. A Godox SL6011D.
Originally I bought myself the GH5 and when my father passed in 2020. I bought the S5 from some money my father left me. I wanted to create memories from memories so hopefully I'll never sell it. The IQ is amazing it's like a painting, anyway about the GH5 I'm going to set it up as a permanent studio camera and i might order the sigma 16M prime.
Just a little sidenote about the GH5 if you're thinking of a cage the smallrig version 2 is the best one as it holds the camera in 3 places, braced in the lug's with 2 tiny screw's. The extra lug supports insures no movement whatsoever.
Do you mind if i ask about how you light your scene in your house with the Gh5 and the mekie 35(cool lens). Is it ok to ask have you a main key light as i like how you light things. This comment is a bit all over the place. I started off wanting to say something different, aw yeah can you recommend a soft box for the light Thanks for the content.
Have a good Day Rock ✌️.

Ahh, I love that your father contributed to your set up, I used two of my father’s old Minolta lenses to shoot an entire feature film on my S5. As far as my lighting, I have two credit card sized RGB lights, Neewer and Pixel, you can get the specific information in my description, I also have a tiny square shaped Ulanzi light, it fits in the palm of my hand. Also RGB. I have an adjustable bulb in one of my lamps so I can change the color and the level of light from my phone, and I have one stick light. I think I might’ve spent $150 total on all the lights combined, but using these limited lights has really taught me how to get exactly what I want in the scene. as long as I have a decent key light, which is always one of my credit card size RGB lights, and a light behind me to separate me from the background, (also the Pixel or Neewer) and then I just create what I want it to look like behind me by shaping the light and shadows by moving things around as practicals, I think it just takes time and patience to work with what you have and you’ll learn a lot. And I always take advantage of whatever natural light is around me, whether it’s during the day or at night, I always include natural light and shadows. I don’t use a soft box or anything like that, personally I don’t think it’s necessary at all. I think the most important thing is to envision what you want in your head or try to model your scene after a film or a photo that you really like, and just keep working at it until you get what you want. And of course, knowing how the camera plays with light really helps. On the S5 I only work with ISO 640 or 4000,and in the GH5 I try to stay at 400. But I also noticed that the GH5 is really good all the way up to about 4000. As long as you light things properly, it’s not really that noisy. I’m really impressed with it. Hope that helps and doesn’t confuse you. ;)

Thank you for taking the time to give me all that advice and information. I will mess around with the light when it arrives, trying different stuff to see what works best.
I enjoyed part 2 today, really nice work, I'm enjoying working my way through your videos as I learn new techniques. Thanks again for the content. Stay cool man . Peace

@@35raysmith that's the best way, just play around. I shot my first feature on my phone with just one light, just experimenting with using it in different ways, and I learned so much from that project. You'll do really well if you get in there and just practice and take risks. Just try stuff. And thanks for the kind words, I really appreciate you watching

So crazy. I saw that when I was editing. Lol. It didn’t bite me, I didn’t have any mosquito bite afterwards, so it just wanted to be in the shot. :-) Thanks so much for coming through, I really appreciate that.

Hey Chuck... I have always used a Zoom H1n recorder with a Purple Panda lavalier mic, and that combination has GREAT quality and is really affordable all around. Lately I've been using this Hollyland Lark Max wireless mic. Sounds great, actually, once you get your levels correct, and it makes it easier for me to not pull out cables and trip on them all the time, but for real projects, I'll still probably use my zoom h1n and the purple panda. The Lark Max is really good, though, so we'll see how I feel over time. I just got it about a week ago and so, I haven't released a video using it yet, but the one I put out after this three part series will be with the Lark, so you'll be able to hear it and compare. Thanks for the kind words, and for all the good energy all the time. Much appreciated. Peace.

I almost forgot, I also use a really inexpensive Boya shotgun mic quite a bit. It is an EXCELLENT mic as well. Only when I’m shooting wide and am really close to the camera. The dark shot at the beginning is using that mic.
