We love each other like eagles do, interlocking talons and plummeting, spinning towards the ground- we both see this eminent crash racing towards us but by our own biological design, just can't let go.
Listening to Tallahassee for the first time in years early today and I thought wouldn't it be great to hear different bands doing cover versions/revisions of TMG originals? Happy to have found this album waiting for me when I looked...and glad it works as well as I thought it might.
I don't know if you've found it by now, but in case you haven't there's more covers of TMG songs. Search up "I Only Listen to The Mountain Goats". That should get you there. Lots of good covers in that collection.
A 12 pack and a pint do no justice.. Where is the mouthwash!? ....Seriously though... I'd hate to be the one to ask it, but, better than the original? My heart is in my throat! Absolutely amazing!!!!
This is a really pretty, soft version! I'm trying to figure out the chords to play this on an acoustic guitar. Any internet strangers with hints for me?
Do you think you could upload the covers of Tallahassee, First Few Desperate Hours, Southward Plantation Road, Game Shows Touch Our Lives, Idylls of the King, and See America Right? If so, thanks!
My ex sang this song on stage in the café when I walked in and he saw me. This was years ago and when I used to live in L.A. The audience booed him because they realized he was just trying to spite/embarrass me.
this is... a very nice, parlor-polite rendition of the original... which is not an improvement. like someone else said, very listenable, a different flavor of a good song, but objectively-- not knowing this artist to have the connection to her, and no disrespect to the rest of her work, or her fans, but-- standalone, this cover falls flat, man... i mean i love singing this song too; but i wouldn't record it if i didn't have visions for how to render it differently. not just with my voice and preferred instruments on the same tempo with smoothed-over vocal inflection, but different. i'll concede that for MG fans who don't know her it's anti-climactic, but that it's definitely a gem for laura stevenson fans and if an artist i loved covered something of this magnitude i'd love n take up for it too.
Jove Joved I respectfully disagree, and I love Laura Stevenson and the Cans as much as I love The Mountain Goats. But maybe you have to hear how she sounds singing happily compared to this. This is more hushed and longing than John's, which I would call more frank and aggressive, but I think that it's a style that goes with the lyrics just as well.
Jane She sounds like you could have replaced the lyrics with anything else and she would have sung it exactly the same fashion. The original sounds as if the music is only there to accompany the lyrics and it's message. This sounds like she's trying to fit the lyrics to the melody/rhythm she chose. Your lyrics sheet can be a shopping list if you sing it that way. There's no longing when there's no emphasis and that sense of honesty. I watched a couple other of her videos and they all lack distinction for the reasons stated above.
+Jove Joved. Wow. Yeah, totally this. I wouldn't even say the album version as sung by Darnelle is the only way it can be rendered, this isn't about not messing with something sacrosanct. I specifically was looking for a different rendition of a favorite but this, while being very listenable, mostly fell flat.
+Jove Joved I've shed tears to some of Laura's songs, so I'm guessing it's just that you don't care for her voice/style. Either that or I'm just an idiot or something. Maybe her voice "lacks distinction" for you, but not for me or any other of her fans. You can have your opinions and not like her voice, I truly don't care, but the way you've worded it is pretty insulting tbh. Listen to Wheel and tell me there isn't emotion behind that record.

Is this from something or something you wrote yourself?
@@ewildk Looked it up to see if was a quote, seems to be original
@@adarkertriad Yeah, I can't find anything on it either.
It's a beautiful written passage though
If it's written by @No one In particular, then it just looks mean if I quote it somewhere else :-D
i keep coming back to this comment every couple of months. this and the cover. i think about it a lot, especially in my lower moments
Every October since 2014 I come back here
are you back?
@@ianfc5747 every October, my friend.
This cover is a heartbreaking and addictively beautiful facsimile of the original
Oh my gosh. This is the most beautiful thing I have ever heard.
I feel like I'm falling in love with having my heart broken, if that makes sense
The whole Alpha Couple series does that to me
Me too, i hate myself so much, now I'm enjoying being hurt by so many people, why? Because a horrible person like me deserves it🤗
Laura Stevenson's cover breaks my heart too much every time.
shes such a goddess lol
My buddy sang this as played the guitar at his ex wife’s funeral. His ex’s new husband/widower actually smiled.
and then everyone clapped
Then Obama showed up and gave him a medal
I would’ve loved to have witnessed that!
and his ex's new husband grew up to be Albert Einstein!
And then the ex-husband and widowed man got together

Absolutely amazing. The vocals in the last refrain were incredible.
I like the female version. .. it's new to me... Beautiful.
“Why did you marry dad?”
“Well, why not?”
“It’s just that when he drinks he changes.”
“Oh, he doesn’t change. That’s just his true nature coming out.”
This is probably the best cover on the CD to be honest.....
McCalla Busman this and oceanographers choice were pretty great covers
oh word
That's some plain AJJ Alpha Rat's Nest erasure
Ethiopians cover?

Does the album cover have some meaning?

mean.
There's nothing behind this. You're singing the lyrics and you have a nice voice, but it's missing the emotion and honesty of the original.
