There are plenty of bands out there that are the living embodiment of "The Ship of Theseus," "Grandfathers Socks," or what we Brits call "Triggers Broom." I suppose for me, Phil Lynott was Thin Lizzy. It was his band in all but name, it would be like The Jimi Hendrix Experience continuing on using his name after his death. Its the same for me with Queen, if John Deacon or Roger Taylor had left, it'd still be Queen. The Queen sound was Freddie and Brian. Other bands manage a second, third or even fourth major lineup change without fundamentally changing the sound. However, they tend to be bands that don't have as big a cultural impact. Sure Alice in Chains, Faith No More et al had a big impact on rock but not as much on wider society. Even my Nan listened to Queen and (some) Thin Lizzy. Good to see you keeping busy chaps!

Hi Guys, great to see the podcast back. I was/still am a huge Queen fan. Once Freddie passed I thought that would be the end of Queen. There was talk of George Michael in the 90s and even Robbie Williams in the 00s taking over on vocals. I think this is when John Deacon finally gave up. Eventually Brian May and Roger Taylor teamed up with Paul Rodgers (Free/Bad Co) and toured/released an album for a few years as Queen + Paul Rodgers. I went to a few shows and they were brilliant. When they decided to team up with Adam Lambert from American Idol, I thought they were just getting desperate and I didn't want to see that. They toured in 2014 (I think) and I skipped that tour. But I was cutting my nose off to spite my face. I have seen the last two tours of Queen + Adam Lambert. They have again been brilliant and Adam is an amazing vocalist (and as he says "not trying to be Freddie"). Queen seems just as popular around the world now as they have ever been which I think is testament to Brian and Roger that you can keep the band alive if you have the right attitude and great music. It will never be as good as Queen with Freddie but it's the next best thing.
For my mind, a band stops being ‘that band’ when the band ‘owner’ dies or leaves. Lemmy died - Motörhead stopped. Lynott died - Lizzy carried on but it wasn’t really Lizzy, Mercury died, Queen carried on but it wasn’t the same.
One of my all time favourite bands is still touring with only 1 original member in it. The Stranglers. I've seen every line up they've had and loved them all. Saw them on their last tour and JJ Burnel is still kicking arse!
I think a big part of it is that as a fan you buy into a band as a gang so when core members leave or are replaced it shatters that image of the bond between them you had in your head. As long as a band retains most of its core members it's still them because that lineage, history and purpose is still there. The Wildhearts being a good example of why a lot of fans disagree with the new iteration (all success to them either way), they've lost too many of the core elements that made them The Wildhearts we love.
Yeah agreed Ben, its hard to understand why the relationship could possibly break down isnt it, like you say whats in your head it’s light years away from reality unfortunately. Yeah theres been a lot written about the WH and opinions are wildly varied, i see both sides and both sides are entitled to their opinion, but then social media always pours petrol on it dosnt it, dont like summat then walk away, like it, stay, should be easy, aint always tho is it haha
He was the best guitarist they ever had but he just didn’t fit the band at all. APD was, musically, a fantastic album and massively underappreciated for many years.

I bet mate!! Ricky is a hell of a front man! His career speaks volumes, he was a great replacement, and it was a brave move starting BSR, was Downing involved in BSR at the start? Baz

Loved Thin Lizzy, saw them through the 70s & 80s, lucky to have been a roadie for them in 1980, but once Phil left the band died. Don't forget he went on to form Grand Slam before he died.
Thoroughly enjoyed this. I don’t often get a chance to listen to the podcasts. I’ll say one thing ……Motorhead, multiple line ups…. Still Motorhead from start to finish and actually I think the strongest line up was the ‘new version’ although how it still got referred to as the new version after nearly 30 years is beyond me! No Lemmy though, no Motorhead so if there is an association with one member that dominates so much it’s very hard to really recognise the band if they are no longer in it. That said Lizzy without Lynott fits in that category for me but I still went to see them without as it was the best way of still hearing their great music live. Similar but not quite the same as they don’t use the name but I love hearing Phil Campbell & The Bastard Sons doing Motorhead covers.
Stratovarius. I never ever thought Timo Tolkki was replaceable when he left the band. Matias however, filled his shoes with great results. But as stated Stratovarius was a surprise and also Kenny replacing Erik in H.E.A.T was another pleasant surprise!!! For me, it is sacred ground that any band always has the original musicians especially the vocals and guitars as they often define a bands sound; But i guess its down to band dynamics; who are the songwriters?; is the singer irreplaceable? is the guitarist a hero? Its a very complex subject!! 😱😱😱😱
First time i saw Alice Cooper, 99/2000, his drummer at the time did about a 5 mins solo. This gave Alice time for a costume but the drumming was great and he also set fire to his sticks and juggled 😂😂😂

Lizzy the perfect example imho No Phil, no Lizzy, despite Scott and Brian still being there and Ricky being great because Phil was such a focal point and the driving, creative force, the Ricky W version is basically a tribute to Lizzy and i m sure Ricky would agree with that. I m a big Ricky Warwick and BSR fan and i m so glad, when they decided to write new material, they decided to change their name
Fair play Andy, Phil, much like Freddy was such a massive part to replace, they were iconic by the time he sadly passed, and yeah Ricky had huge shoes to fill, but yeah the blokes got huge balls, not only stepping into Phils shoes for what could easily have been a career with Scott G and Brian, they then knocked it on the head to start again! Some ballsy moves there, but it paid off, they hit the scene like a ton of bricks! Baz
I have to say I'm more about the music than worrying about a line up change. However I have seen a few bands over the years with very few original members and they haven't sounded that good, but on the whole I've seen a lot of bands with new members who still sound fantastic. Big Country would be an example that they continued on after Stuart Adamson died and still sounded good.
Famously, Danny leaving(fired) The Wildhearts, bass player caused/causes strongly worded debate. Definitely a character, and part of the debauchery. Then there's Skynrd. No original members left, still on their "farewell" tour. Is it really Skynrd now? Not sure, probably not. But their songs for me, hit deep and hard. Could I be tempted to go see the tour later this year? Absolutely!
Every time an original band member leaves the bands name should change to parts!! ie its status quo til drummer leaves which then makes it quo part 2 Lancaster goes so it becomes quo part 3 rick bless him makes it quo part 4.etc

With regard to members leaving a band or dying, I think it depends on who they are or what they do in the band. As they are my favourite band (you are in the top 2 🙂), Metallica can't continue without James or Lars, and possibly Kirk. People talk about Cliff Burton's death and them not being the same, but Jason Newsted and Robert Trujillo were great replacements. This might also be a controversial opinion, but I thought Black Sabbath were better with Ronnie James Dio!

Brian Robertson also recorded the 'Another Perfect Day' album with Motorhead. Then got kicked out during the subsequent tour.
