  • We made it to Europe to explore some amazing medieval cities near Amsterdam. Nikki grew up here, so she's showing us some of her favorite places! We start out in the charming city of Delft, which is known for it's Delft Blue and numerous churches! Afterward, we head over to Gouda to eat some cheese and the absolutely lekker (tasty) and fresh stroopwafel! We finished off in Deventer, one of the five oldest cities in the entire country known for some quaint streets and their own delicious dessert!

    That's an excellent choice of old Dutch cities!
    Did you also make a video about small villages? There are so many different kinds in the Netherlands! Sometimes they are preserved so well, that indeed, you feel like stepping back in time, if it weren't for the modern cars you see.

    The Netherlands as a whole seems like the most beautiful place to live. It is my dream to visit there, although if I could manage, I would live there. Do you need to speak Dutch to live there, or is English ubiquitous enough to function? How expensive would it be to visit or even live there?

    • @DennyandNikki
      @DennyandNikki  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is such a beautiful country! Basically everyone here speaks English. In the bigger cities, such as Amsterdam, The Hague or Rotterdam you wouldn’t necessarily need to speak Dutch. And The Netherlands is pretty expensive to visit and live 👀

    • @imagomonkei
      @imagomonkei 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DennyandNikki I assume someone would need to have some kind of work lined up already before emigrating, right? Like do you have to be sponsored by a company there, or is it possible to go there and then find work?

    • @DennyandNikki
      @DennyandNikki  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@imagomonkei If you are coming from a non-EU country, I think you'd need a job lined up for sponsorship. We aren't too sure about the process though.

      I would say no. But if you wanna live here it would be very handy to speak Dutch as it makes the bureaucratic thing so much more easy. Also it's quite expensive here certainly if your middle income.

      Possible, but not advisable. That would be such a dumb thing to do. Those, who 'do' Europe, haven't done much at all, except traveling to and fro.
      Best way to get into things, is to take your time to enjoy it! Visit the local museum and parks and whatever the town is known for. Relax and take it all in. And don't even do this on three consecutive days, but visit a Dutch theme park on another day, go for the beach on another and visit one of the many nature reserves on yet another. It's amazing.

    None of these cities show any significant medieval remains, so not medieval cities. There most signicant medieval remains are some basements. The medieval period lasted from the year 400 until the year 1500. What is there to see from the street that dates back from before 1500 that is still in it's original medieval state? In Amsterdam only three buildings of that period exist: the Oude Kerk, the Waag on Nieuwmarkt and the Schreierstoren. Of those, only the Schreierstoren is still mostly in it's original state. So there are hardly any medieval remains in Amsterdam. Delft has the Prinsenhof, but also only few parts date back from before 1500, not visible from outside. The Delft city hall was rebuild with a new desing in 1618-1620 after being destroyed by fire.

      Caught in a technicality. But that's not what people are looking for, in general. These old cities are very attractive, even if they don't fit in with the technical term used here, they do convey that feeling of really old and authentic. And charming. Centuries older than most things in the US.

    • @zzzowie
      @zzzowie 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@gardenjoy5223 Of course the 17th and 18th century architecture in the Netherlands is very beautiful, but it is blatant incompetence to call it "medieval Dutch cities". Not just a "technicality". It shows a complete lack of understanding about history. The word "exploring" is also not appropriate here. This video shows basic tourist stuff. For someone who grew up there, very disappointing.
