The nice thing about homebrews is that they have an unlimited amount of time to code and finetune their creations. This is in stark contrast to the tight deadlines that original 2600 coders had, less than 2 months in some cases (like "E.T." which Howard Scott Warshaw only had FIVE WEEKS to program). If you know anything about programming on the 2600, you'll know that it is an extremely challenging platform with very limited resources.* Anyone who can create any kind of game whatsoever on that system has my respect.
    * For example, it only had 128 bytes, yes BYTES, of RAM and had no video memory in the same way we think of it today. The video drawing was mostly controlled by the program itself, drawing things and moving things just behind the video beam.

I've played many of those, own a few. But the Bowling game was a surprise to see (how'd I miss it?) and it really uses the 2600 in an appealing way. 32K sure helps with the graphics.

Hunchy is based on the British arcade game Hunchback - the aim is to rescue Quasimodo's girlfriend Desdemona. [They attempted to make it a franchise with Hunchback II and Hunchback at the Olympic Games]
There were a lot of clones on the British 8 bit micros and most of them were awful.

The actual Hunchback 2 on micro computers was an actual worthy sequel to the original. Especially on C64 and Spectrum

Sorry for multiple comments, but I love this video =) (and I have time today)
    Some notes: (not criticisms)
Hunchy is a clone of a C64 / Spectrum Game, Hunchback. It was in the arcade like you said and there is an A8 prototype.
Jetman is a clone of Jetpack for various 8bits
    Kung Fu II is amazing
    Lead 1K is cathartic blasting
OMG Medieval Mayhem is awesome! Look like the Castle Crisis Homebrew for the 5200 / A8
    Mega Man is really good.
BTW BTari Basic is just a game engine and Kernel. Games van Be made with it that use DPC+ and other Kernels that don't all look and alike.
QB is pretty genius of a puzzle game
Space Rocks is Absolutely the best Asteroids Game on the 2600
Strike Zone is Wii Bowling for the vCS!
    Xanthium look really fun.
    Great video!

Great video showcasing another batch of amazing homebrews for the 2600... I love it! ❤Four Play was one of the first homebrew titles that I picked up for the Atari many years ago. The AI can be fairly aggressive at times, but it's still beatable. I loved ConnectFour growing up, and I'd say this is a pretty close representation.

Chaotic Grill and Strike Zone are so appealing!
I could never get into the original Burger Time on Atari 2600 due to just how rough it looked...the food looked like slinking flashes and all the food items looked like buns
The homebrew is such a nice improvement! And Strike Zone I really need to get :)

12:35 Hunchy is based on a popular 1983 UK arcade called "Hunchback" from Century Electronics. While Hunchy 2 is based on the ZX Spectrum (also on C64) of Hunchback 2 Quasimodo's Revenge from Ocean Software. Jetman is loosely based on Jet Pac by Rare (at the time called Ultimate.)

ASTAR is a pathfinding algorithm uses in game development. It's pretty amazing they used it for this game. It's supposed to find the shortest path between to "tiles" on a grid, so you can use that in your strategy.

the thing with some graphics here (on most of the games shown) is that these Devs have used Batari Basic to make their games, which by being an easier language, it also limits what you can do on the hardware. Hence the single inexistent scan lines on the playfield graphics and the double stacked pixels on the sprites (2 pixels taller).
I can make atari 2600 esque games with no programming at all (but the downside is it won´t play on the console)

It's difficult to tell sometimes what the actual game audio and/or music is, because you seem to randomly add music for interest (I guess?) But there are times when Im just like "no way, it's too sophisticated to be rendered realtime on the 2600" and it made watching the whole video a little distracting cause I was never sure. Otherwise, thanks for the series!

That Pac-Man game is amazing. I believe the author worked on it for more than a year (one of the nice things about homebrews: no tight deadlines!). Anyway, here's a young Tod Frye (original 2600 Pac-Man creator) explaining why his Pac-Man turned out the way it did: th-cam.com/video/UTDUB_GiTKA/w-d-xo.html and here's a much older Tod admiring the homebrew version (Pac-Man 8K, which also has the title and cut scenes): th-cam.com/video/RqezF_Lv05Y/w-d-xo.html
