Sorry to break it to you, but head gear only protects the face from cuts and bruises. It doesn't really protect the brain from concussion or brain damage.
It’s really to increase the level of warm up. It makes it more of a dynamic stretch plus it’s over emphasising the technique triggering the correct muscles used for the session.

Would you advise doing this as a separate workout or adding them to your shadowboxing before,after, or in between?
In Russia, we do them as a part of partner drills after warm-up/jumping ropes. Shadow boxing is a separate part of training.
