Beginner Voice Over Equipment. Did I Make A Mistake?

  • In this video, I talk about what equipment I’ve used to get started in Voiceover and what I’ve picked up so far. Is an iPad Pro M4 the right choice for this career? I have my doubts but I’ll show you why I feel I can make it work. As a beginner voice over actor, this may be a bad move, but it’s one I’m committed to in starting this new career.

Love it Robert! Blazing a trail using DR to process your audio! What an interesting perspective! Keep me posted on how you get on with the workflow! What are you doing for storage?

We’ll see what happens. I’m okay admiting if I made a mistake. That’s the point of the channel, after all, but I’m committed to making it work.
As for storage, I’m using a combination of cloud and external storage. Any time I’m done with a memory intensive project, I just offload it to one of those. I didn’t even get a large capacity iPad, just 256GB, but even with my photography archive and the videos for the channel, I’m less than half capacity.

Keep it up! If I were you, I would start posting shorts as well. I think it'll work out well for you.

Man, I’ve been contemplating for weeks what the heck to talk about in a short. I genuinely can’t think of ideas for it.

@@DayOneVoiceover I would showcase some voiceovers. I would also look at what other people usually do to get ideas. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

@@DayOneVoiceover I've seen some people highlight certain parts of their videos and turning it into a short if that helps.

@@Taiica I was ready to go all-in on shorts after the exchange above but when I looked up how to best maximize them, I came across a lot of info saying to stay away from them. They say it attracts new subs but those new subs won’t be interested in the long form content so they eventually unsubscribe. Even “Mr Beast” (apparently) admitted that shorts were hurting his channel viewership so he started a new channel dedicated exclusively to shorts. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Hopefully, you're having luck with this endeavor. I am kinda curious why GarageBand was not on the short list for recording and editing your audio. I did a quick search and came up with the video I'll paste here. I don't use GarageBand, but the guy in this video seemed convinced it could be done. I'm not sure what has changed for the better or worse since it was published 6 years ago. Anyway, good luck with all this!

@@SeanAdams001 thanks for the link, I’ll check it out for sure. I actually have used garage band to record on my iPad. Come to think of it, it’s what I used to record the main audio for the first Fiverr gig I had a few weeks ago. The issue is that the compressor and eq weren’t really customizable (as far as I could tell) and I couldn’t find other options such as gates, de-esser, and de-click.
But I’ll check out the video and see if I can find some info I had missed. Thanks again!

Love it! New subscriber here! I’m new to VO work and I also only have an IPad Pro M4. Bumped into your page and I’m going on the journey with you. I just bought a portable sound panel and going to be using my Rodecaster pro to grab audio. Bare bones

I started in a similar position as you did in terms of Microphones. I had what essentially was a BLUE YETI clone from Fifine and it got me through several gigs on Fiverr and was pretty cheap at $70. Plug-in-play and it never let me down but, it was missing some punch compared to some other sellers on Fiverr using XLR mics which I now use. I tip my hat off to you because using an ipad alone would be something I would never be able to do.

Yeah the iPad has been a challenge for sure. I’m being needlessly stubborn but we’ll see what happens. I appreciate you sharing your experience as well. This has been a hell of an experience and it’s just getting started.
