Back to back years we got maybe the most beautifully shot "war" films ever in Deer Hunter and Apocalypse Now. One is like a psychedelic dream and the other is like a vivid memory. Both masterful work. Outside of Barry Lyndon and Days of Heaven, maybe the best work of the decade.
Am a Nam vet yet never saw or heard of most of the scenes in the movie about going on over there. My brother humped a M60 over there while in the 2tth infantry. Only thing he ever said was should have been dead several times during his 12 month tour. One of our neighbors was lilled over there and my brothers best friend came home crazy with a steel plate in his head.
What a scene, and the whole movie was an absolute masterpiece.................
