A lot of people misunderstand this song. They think the message is "It seems impossible, but if you try you might succeed." To me, no, the message is "When there's no way you can possibly succeed, try anyway. You'll fail, but so what? You _will_ make the world a better place; that alone makes it worth doing."
@Evil Monkey It's more poetic and thus poignant to phrase it as he did. I wholeheartedly agree with his wording. That said, one could also see it as not mattering if one's actions even succeed at all a la Prof. Bernado de la Paz's philosophy on revolution. The song itself is filled with seemingly contradictory descriptions, which make sense if the philosophy is that treating the world not as how it is but how it should be, though patently absurd and by all rights doomed before attempted, is nonetheless a morally righteous and commendable manner of dealing with the world.
Before my grandfather died, he left to me a classic copy of Don Quijote written in Spanish. Thank you abuelo, for sending me on my quest. Until we meet again, I'll bear the unbearable sorrow and do my duty. To anyone who is listening out there, there is a light, go find it, that is your quest!
Since you had a copy of Don Quixote I recommend you read it since people always get the message wrong. Don quixote is a raving lunatic that makes things worse everywhere he goes. He is the equivalent of a man wearing trashbags that will cut you since you're one of the lizard people. While he goes around harassing the countryside in order to live out his fantasies actually adventures are going on. While people pour their hearts out to him he interrupts to complain about romance books and why 2 characters shouldn't be together. While actually noble women are in need of help he is fighting a procession of nuns. While people are fighting for honor and love he is attacking a windmill. All this to say the actual meaning of don quixote is the opposite of what has been popularized. When you live in a fantasy world you miss out on the real life adventures of the people around you. The book is 400 years old so it was bound to go through some changes but somewhere along the way the message got reversed. "Man of La Mancha" is based on one of the greatest books ever written, _Don Quixote de La Mancha_, a 17th century Spanish epic novel by Miguel de Cervantes and one of the most read and translated books in history. Don Quixote tells us that we should not be too weak to be carried along by this grim practical world, but rather we should be strong enough, even if there is no strength left in us, to strive for what is ideal.

This man among men who gave the world Lawrence of Arabia, Peter O'Toole has gone from us. Though his performance in this epic film was regarded as among the greatest ever seen, Mr. O'Toole captured and held my heart with his performance as Miguel De Cervantes' addled hero, Don Quixote De La Mancha. On that wet and miserable Sunday afternoon in 1979, I witnessed this magnificent rendering, full of humanity and passion. Mr. O'Toole your performance awakened in me a lifelong desire to help others. The world is made ever larger for your contribution. For that, I am most gratefully in your debt. We will not see the likes of you again.
Don't forget credit to Simon Gilbert, who was the unsung (pun intended) hero who recorded the vocals for all of O'Toole's singing parts. A brilliant performance as well!

A goal that no one could do, but if we are inspired by him, we might strive for it ourselves. While no ONE could do it, enough of us trying may change that, and we can achieve it together.

To me this song is one of the greatest of all time. We sang it in our ceremony when I graduated from 6th & 9th grades, and later at high school, that last time I provided the lyrics since I had memorized it from the first ceremony. Puerto Rican actors José Ferrer and Raúl Juliá, as well as Richard Kiley and Brian Stokes Mitchell, among others, have starred successfully in the stage play.
One of my favorite performances from Peter O'Toole. So many of his roles, Lawrence, Lord Jim, Mr. Chips, and here, Don Quixote, were so inspirational to me in my younger years.
Isn't it liberating that you're labelled crazy when you strive to transcend the madness of this world. Don't buy into the cruel premisses of mammon. The glory is in the quest.
This is still as powerful, and majestic, as it was in 1972. Time has not dimmed its message, nor its value. It is not a dream. It is more than duty. Indeed, it remains a privilege to hold to this course. It is what separates the mere from the magnificent, the mundane from the memorable, and the good, forever from evil. Within us, the Man of La Mancha lives, whether we recognize him, or not. We all have a quest, from the first breath we gasp, until our last. What we pursue, and how, is ours.
Great portrayal and inspiring without any shootings or killings and entertainment for the whole family.. Because it was made 50 years ago. Another generations entertainment..Nostalgic today. With so many young viewers clueless about its significance or meaning.

My soul mate use to call me her Don Quixote. She bought me windmills that played this song and anything else that came her way that related to Man of La Mancha. At the time I had not read the book or seen the movie. I had no idea why she said what she. One night she had bought tickets to a local theater group that was putting the play on. She literally had to drag me kicking and screaming to the theater. I was a total ass. By the end of the play I understood why she said what she said. I had seen my own soul being played by Don Quixote. I was crying like a baby. She held my hand and put her head on my shoulder.
It's the saddest thing in the world, losing the one who teaches you to tilt at windmills. But at least she got to show you your own soul onstage. Love to you, my friend.
I got to see this play twice once when I was in 5th or 6th grade it touched me back then. The second time was a couple of years ago at my local community college. Both times I wept like a baby because I strongly believe this is how we should live our lives by seeing the person for who they are on the inside rather than their appearance on the outside

Don Quixote is truly a great social commentary. It mocks romanticism as having never existed, a mere illusion, in the hands of the nobility of Europe, yet becomes real in the hands of commoners.
Another thing is the amazing open-ended nature of the story. It has something for everyone to experience and at every age. You notice things that weren’t significant at the time, but with age your perspective has changed and notices small details. So much can be said and seen in his writing and so many themes are present, but ultimately, each reader gets to decide the interpretation personally. It’s absolutely fantastic.

"Giving up the Ghost"
[Your soul/spirit back to God]
Jesus said
""And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave upthe ghost."
Luke 23:46
“When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said,
" It is finished"
and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.”
John 19:30:
Simon Gilbert has a website - he's very quick and eager to respond to any questions you email to him.
@@JavertRA Thank God, life is much richer by far having experienced this great musical, Dad knows what is good for his girl, smart man

Beautifully said.
R.I.P. OUR FAITHFUL KNIGHT! THANK YOU PETER O'TOOLE FOR ALL!
I lost my heart after seeing the tearful performance of Otoole&Lorence. A master piece of acting. Peter otoole we failed to clone you .
Thank you
One of the most underrated films of Peter O'toole.Alas 8 0scar nominated, but never won.A real life Don Quixote in his quest for the " Impossible Dream".R.I.P Peter.Farewell the Man of La Mancha.
An Oscar isn't the "unreachable goal". Many do achieve it. The goal would be "to put a smile and a tear on the face of everyone". A goal that no one could do, but if we are inspired by him, we might strive for it ourselves. While no ONE could do it, enough of us trying may change that, and we can achieve it together.
No one will ever know how important this novel was. It has affected such great painters as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, and many great artist from all over the world to paint him and Sancho Panza. Recently in Madrid there was a sellout crowd to watch Man of La Mancha. He was the greatest character in all of Spanish Literature. Don Quixote.
Another good reason it's never been out of print.
My wife found this song years ago. She would play it and sing it on her guitar ! He sings it with true conviction ! Lovely words of encouragement !
watching this crying. i remember seeing this with my daddy when i was a lil girl. he loved don quixote
Is it a good movie? All I know is I love the song lol
@@ninyaplays6026 yes, watch it you won't regret it. I saw the play yesterday, it follows the movie keenly. Both were excellent
@@MaximilianonMars Thank God life is much richer by far having experienced this musical, now more revelant then ever , your lucky to have had such a smart Dad
@@ninyaplays6026 It only appears to be a movie, it is a great piece of literature that became a Broadway musical , it doesnt really work as a movie does it , Its all content and character, seen as a play, in a theater, its much better
When Quixote and Sancho are about to ascend the steps and Quixote turns to Sancho, I always imagine he's being like "Let's go be brave, Sancho. Let's show them what it means to be brave."
The story of a simple man that didn't want to see the world like everyone did, but with innocent eyes without condemnation and give everyone a fair chance to be seen without the stains from a past no matter how dark it was.
Still inspirational, and appropriate for today. G-d bless the family of Peter O'Toole
In Hebrew the vowels are sometimes omitted.
This story is so inspirational!
What kind of actors!!! Goose bumps. This quality has not existed for decades.
Those of us, lucky enough to find someone who can show us these things have had the chance to love deeper, and lived more than any person can imagine who has not. We have lived a dream that we do not want to wake from.
“ Woe to the wicked “
A classic for all time.
Words alone cannot express the emotion this stirs in me...Thanks
Oh my God, the tears... :(
What a fantastic song!
The parable of how we should live life
In my mind is this Peter o Toole the best ever ! ( Agree if you mind ) (y)

Peter O'Toole deserved an Academy award for this. He should also have got one for LAWRENCE OF ARABIA.
One of my Three Favorite Actors pre Star Wars ...
Peter O'Toole
Gregory Peck
Charlton Heston
The most beautiful death scene. I would love to go that way living a long life following my dreams and dying while singing in the arms of my friends
and not giving up
Don't give away the ending, I haven't seen it yet :)
one hundredth like, you deserve a hundred more.
This forgotten film contains one of Peter O'Toole's great performances. I went to see this movie a number of times back in 1972. Britain has a tradition, sadly dying out now, of great scene chewing performers. Peter was up there with the best. RIP.
Not forgotten I say.
Gracias Don Miguel de Cervantes, personajes maravillosos para una historia universal. Magnífico musical, gracias Peter O'toole, gracias Sofía loren, gracias a todos, artistas, compositores, gracias por esta obra extraordinaria
I love Man of La Mancha so so so much!
Me too, it stirs my soul like no other.
Two of the Greatest actors of our time ... Peter O'Toole and Sophia Loren, staring in one of the finest literary works and outstanding music. How wonderful to be able to watch this whenever I want.
THIS IS MY QUEST! To follow that star! No matter how hopeless, no matter how far! To fight for the right, withouht question or pause! TO BE WILLING TO MARCH INTO HELL FOR A HEAVENLY CAUSE!

I watched this film when I was a teenager...didn't really 'cast a spell' on me then. But now I feel it resonates so much......what amazing words....what a fabulous combination of Peter O'Toole & Sophia Loren.....the most Motivating words I have heard in years.
These words inspire the heart to go on forever with the grace of God along by your side.
I love this song from the first time I heard it long ago & it still remains in my heart when life seems to want to fade away. May everyone who seeks Hope apply these words to their daily activety forever.

Its a scene in the movie
such a beatufull madness, you can't help but weep, and hope you can meet your end with such a terrible and insane love for the world
To me this song is one of the greatest of all time.
Peter O'Toole, magnificent. Their is no other word to describe this man, so much class and grace!!!! R.I.P. Mr. O'Toole. MAGNIFICENT!
One of my favorite performances from Peter O'Toole. So many of his roles, Lawrence, Lord Jim, Mr. Chips, and here, Don Quixote, were so inspirational to me in my younger years.
Peter O'toole ! Not only a great actor and a legendary piss artist, but also a surprisingly good singer! Absolutely brilliant
Isn't it liberating that you're labelled crazy when you strive to transcend the madness of this world. Don't buy into the cruel premisses of mammon. The glory is in the quest.

WOW! So beautuful! I love Peter O'toole.
May The Lord bless the family of O'Toole. Peter was an outstanding actor!
This touches me sooo much inside. it makes me smile, wonder and cry.
This is still as powerful, and majestic, as it was in 1972. Time has not dimmed its message, nor its value. It is not a dream. It is more than duty. Indeed, it remains a
privilege to hold to this course. It is what separates the mere from the magnificent,
the mundane from the memorable, and the good, forever from evil. Within us,
the Man of La Mancha lives, whether we recognize him, or not.
We all have a quest, from the first breath we gasp, until our last. What we pursue, and how, is ours.
Well said, friend.
Great portrayal and inspiring without any shootings or killings and entertainment for the whole family.. Because it was made 50 years ago. Another generations entertainment..Nostalgic today. With so many young viewers clueless about its significance or meaning.
This is superb and so is the book. Cervantes did a wonderful job. Don Quixote is a long book but very readable unlike so many other so-called "classics". The "Impossible Dream" accurately fits the premise of the book.
Somebody sang this at my Grandpas funeral I was only 8 at the time but I remember it so clearly
Beautiful 🤗
@9TheMajor more like casket case
Was it Robert Goulet?
I remember watching this during the school holidays years back and crying in front of the TV. Wonderful film.
He was/is my favorite actor of all time! I fell deeply in love w/ him when I was just 13 and now 32 years later I still love him. His passing has left a huge hole in my heart and his absence from future films will also leave a huge gaping hole. He was one of the best actors of all time and the deathbed scene from Man of La Mancha is one of the most moving. Rest in peace sweet rogue... I mean prince!
I am with you all the way. Rogue, prince, king - he was all of these. I love and miss the old rascal. 30 years he has been my Apollo and I still haven't got over my crush on him.
Our high school presented this play,it was talked about in the newspaper at the time. I have based my whole life on the song the impossible dream.
La verdad cuando vi esta obra lloré y tenia 15 años, hoy tengo 52 y me causa lo mismo sentimiento.
What a song and what a performance ! Sheer genius !

+Irvin Argon if that's your answer, I think you misunderstand me.
Irvin Argon you are a very jealous ass.
One of the best performances,of this great work!
Here lies the noble, fearless knight
whose valour rose to such a height
when Death at last did strike him down
His was the victory and reknown
He recked the world of little price
and was a bugbear in mens eyes
but had the fortune in his age
to live a fool and die a sage.
The death scene still brings me to tears 50 or so years after I watched the live performance!
Gives me chills and goosebumps to listen to this inspirational song.
The world is a bit less.. now that your not here Sir.. A vacancy, in the air, that you occupied, with grace and honor.
but you are here the O'Toole of your own life, listen! hope! do!
David Lemon in
David Lemon beautiful words!
She used to call you Don Quixote? Are you guys still together? This is such a lovely anecdote :)
No. She was in a car wreck and sustained sever head injuries and she never came back. Her body healed but her spirit never came back.
Damn, that's a tragedy :(
Dude you just make me cry :
It's the saddest thing in the world, losing the one who teaches you to tilt at windmills. But at least she got to show you your own soul onstage. Love to you, my friend.
Thank you, sir, for brightening our world. Until the next time...
I got to see this play twice once when I was in 5th or 6th grade it touched me back then. The second time was a couple of years ago at my local community college. Both times I wept like a baby because I strongly believe this is how we should live our lives by seeing the person for who they are on the inside rather than their appearance on the outside
THE GREAT PETER OTOOLE AND THE BEAUTIFULL SOPHIA LOREN
and vice versa
'The Impossible Dream (The Quest)'
To dream the impossible dream,
To fight the unbeatable foe,
To bear with unbearable sorrow,
To run where the brave dare not go.
To right the unrightable wrong,
To love pure and chaste from afar,
To try when your arms are too weary,
To reach the unreachable star.
This is my quest,
To follow that star
No matter how hopeless,
No matter how far.
To fight for the right
Without question or pause,
To be willing to march
Into hell for a heavenly cause.
And I know if I'll only be true
To this glorious quest
That my heart will be peaceful and calm
When I'm laid to my rest.
And the world will be better for this,
That one man scorned and covered with scars
Still strove with his last ounce of courage.
To fight the unbeatable foe.
To reach the unreachable star
Thank you for that🌹
I had the great honor to see Richard Kiley perform this at The Academy of Music with my parents.I was a young woman,
and sat at the edge of my chair, sobbing. This song always makes me think of my Prescious Father, who loved this song.
Among a million other things, I owe him the love of beautiful music....
I can not watch this without getting "the feels". Been that way for since I saw the show at the ANTA Washington Square Theatre in NYC in 1968. What I love about the film production, (besides everything) is the casting of Sophia Loren. She was simply perfect for this.
Oh God, no matter how many times I see this movie, I always cry! My favorite picture of all times!
I was in the musical in high school in 1970. I remember this song so vividly, heard it over m over again. I always sang it underneath my breathe during the practices n live performances. Great memories. I also enjoy singing it in karaoke.
One of my All Time Favorites. Dont care who sings it.😇
It was so long ago... What a beautiful memory this song brings...
I can´t avoid to cry every time I see this great movie. Mr O´toole was one of a kind and Mrs Loren, amazing! Thank you to post this jewel of the worldwide cinematography
Don Quixote is truly a great social commentary. It mocks romanticism as having never existed, a mere illusion, in the hands of the nobility of Europe, yet becomes real in the hands of commoners.
Yeah... but he was a nobleman.
@@missvidabom And he fuckin' died, leaving his romanticism in the hands of his servants and the people who knew him. Also, barely a noble.
*crying*
Thank you because Iam so tired of standing up alone poor, weak and defeated ,your words helped me
I always cry when I hear this! I love it! It's so beautiful!!! Love and respect!
every now and then God reaches down and touches someone with divine inspiration and a song like this is the result. May you always tilt at windmills.
