Ok, it’s a really great ceratopsian specimen. But what are the numbers? What’s ever actually been published on regular size John to verify this claim of largest? The only thing I have ever seen was from the museum in Italy that did the mount saying he was an estimated 10-12 tonnes when alive. Henry the Wyoming giant at the Missouri Institute of Natural Science in Springfield Missouri is measured and published at 18 tonnes. That’s 50% bigger than John. John probably doesn’t even make top 3 honestly. It feels like the people who mounted him were just making unsubstantiated claims for the purpose of driving up the auction price under false pretenses.

I've also heard that Big John's skull is mostly plaster. Maybe a lot of bidders weren't aware of that.

@@paulgermano7837 It is actually a really nice specimen but I want to see published numbers. The Society of integrated and comparative biology published Henry numbers. 1070 mm unrestored femur, 1143 mm scapula. 18 tonne conservative estimate. Not just largest ceratopsian but largest ornithischian ever found.

And this is the first I’ve read that 3D printing was used to replicate pieces for John. Can anyone confirm this? I know that Henry’s missing pieces have been printed and he’s actually the worlds largest so I’m wondering if the stories got mixed up on that somehow.

Where will this specimen go after the three year loan has ended ? Will degreed professional paleontologists be allowed to study the specimen ? And if so, how can continued accessibility be guaranteed for future scientists to examine, revise, and expand upon the work done by earlier researchers? This is how science works. At present, a very valuable, to science - not monetary value, specimen is just a vanity possession of a wealthy businessman who generously allows his prized possession to be displayed for a temporary time period before deciding what to do next with his expensive toy.

There is a commercial side to paleontology that not all agree with but it does help keep the Dino digging industry going. My big issue here is the false claim of largest. I’m not even sure John makes top 3. He’s at least 50% smaller than Henry the Wyoming giant who is on display and will remain at a public museum for all to see and study.

Have you not looked into how Sidd Pagidipati made this money? People will turn a blind eye if it means they get something from criminals. WTH?
