I will upload a link to my 3D printed model of the tool. Pardon if my vocabulary is incorrect as I shot this quite late at night. Calculations shown in this video are the same for the opener and closer shim. The closer turned out to be in spec.
0:15 - Tools Needed
0:44 - Table of Measurements
1:32 - Which range of specs to use
1:45 - Set cyl. head to TDC (Top Dead Center)
2:13 - How to use the feeler gauge
2:40 - Measuring the opening rocker clearance (opener shim)
3:23 - Measuring the closer rocker clearance (closer shim)
4:42 - Removing the camshafts
5:18 - Identifying horizontal/vertical intake and exhaust cams
5:55 - Removing the opener shim
6:06 - Removing the half rings
6:43 - Removing the closer shim
7:02 - Identifying shim size (measuring procedure and tool in link above)
7:56 - Calculating your new replacement shim'
8:15 - Clearance is too small
9:31 - Clearance is too large
10:18 - Getting new shims and reassembly
Good explanation of shim adjustment theory! If your cylinder is installed on the engine, however, have it at TDC when pulling the closing shims with the half-rings, so you don't lose the valve in the cylinder. When the camshafts are in and you want to turn them over, back the piston down so the valves can move.
Very helpful video that is also a manageable length. Your video really takes away the intimidation factor from the job. The only thing I fear is the timing of the belts, but I will take my time with it. Thanks again.
A in italian stays for ASPIRAZIONE = INTAKE
S stays for SCARICO = EXAUST
Yeah, I'll buy the feeler guage tension trick. /worth a like!
Informative. Thanks dude.
Great video!
Thanks for the vid. I’m doing my 998 for the first time. Belts were my first lesson last yr. Now on to the valves.
Takes a lot of the guesswork out before I open it up. I think I may just remove the heads, seems more straightforward on the workbench with heads in hand.
What’s the PayPal addy?
Does the engine knock when valves doesn't have the right clearance?
If the clearances are very loose then yes the valvetrain will make some noise
